Water moccasin, a bend in a river, a moccasin shoe, an Indian chief, or maybe mocs stands for mockingbird. How about all five, plus a train. xrotatehx
From wikipedia:

The school's athletic teams are called the Mocs. The teams were nicknamed Moccasins until 1996. (The origin of the name is uncertain; however, Moccasin Bend is a large horseshoe-shaped bend in the Tennessee River directly below Lookout Mountain.)

The mascot has taken on four distinct forms, with a water moccasin being the mascot in the 1920s, and then a moccasin shoe (known as "The Shoe") was actually used as the school's mascot at times in the 1960s and 1970s. From the 1970s until 1996, the mascot was Chief Moccanooga, an exaggerated Cherokee tribesman.

In 1996, due in to concerns over ethnic sensitivity,[4] the Moccasins name and image were dropped in favor of the shortened "Mocs" and an anthropomorphized mockingbird named "Scrappy" dressed as a railroad engineer. The school's main athletic logo features Scrappy riding a train (a reference to Chattanooga's history as a major railroad hub and to the song "Chattanooga Choo Choo"). The mascot takes its name from former football coach A.C. "Scrappy" Moore.

It seems that you guys have decided to continue on with the mockingbird mascot with the new logos. Congrats on maintaining the identity, and lets keep it that way. However I would fully support a move back to the water moccasin as your mascot.

What UTC really needs to do is dump those horrid mustard uniforms.

At least it is what it is. Coastal has to lie about what a Chanticleer is. Don't drink the Cool-Aid that our administration (and fans who fail to understand the Nun's Priest Tale) throws down our throats.

I do like the other moc with the over-alls and workboots better.

I think they've changed it every year since I've been at App...which is 2004.

I don't think last year was the train. I believe that was 2006?

I think they are still gold and blue with a "C" on the helmet.

I will say, though, a mockingbird wearing an engineers cap driving a choo choo train is a pretty unique logo on a football helmet. Sorry they let that one go.

1) the school has never officially used the water moccasin as a mascot.

2) the school has always used some sort of cherokee indian as a mascot (along with, for a short time, the odd moccasin shoe thing as a secondary mark/mascot...that goes down in the books as so terrible and reviled that it has now become legend on campus...so revile that the student pulled the person out of the costume, handed the "corpse" up the rows of old Chamberlain Field and threw it off the back of the stadium...the theme of the 1988 yearbook was "who killed the big shoe").

3) yes, they dumped chief because of PC issues (which quite frankly doesn't bother me, the mascot doesn't play on the field so I don't really care what form it takes...that stuff is mainly about the kids and selling merch)

4) on a side note, the whole original reason for the name of the school mascot was because the cherokee that lived on moccasin bend for, well nearly 10,000 years (according to archeologists), were nicknamed "mocs" in the late 1700's by the white settlers that came to the region.

5) the team has been called the "mocs" in some form or manner since the 60's, they just made it "official" in '96 (the shorten form)

6) the team has not changed colors, the have merely returned to the correct colors of navy blue and old gold. It looks a lot better than "urine sample yeller". They debuted the new dark blue jerseys at homecoming, they look very sharp.

7) they have not "changed" the logo, these are only secondary marks. The official logo for the Mocs is the "Big C". Secondary marks include the two new one's from above and the "cowcatcher logo" along with a couple of new marks that have yet to be released (some are sport specific, others are "kid friendly").

8) for those who don't know the correlation, the state bird of tennessee is the mockingbird, which is considered fierce, scrappy and territorial.

in conclusion, I like the update...it will sell a lot of merchandise...and it looks better than a train-riding bird.

oh, and just to give a little ribbing...I can't imagine a fan of a school whose mascot is a drunken hillbilly disguised as the gorton's fisherman would be taking any other school to task for their choice of mascot design ;)
