Mr C picks Liberty 42 - 20 over Western. What do you guys think?

( I probably should have posted this one on the smack board..... here comes the mountaineers......... 3, 2, 1 )

No. 25 Liberty (2-0) at Western Carolina (0-1), 6 p.m.

It's been a while since Liberty has had such high expectations, hearkening back to the Sam Rutigliano era. With the Flames cracking the Top 25 this week, it marks the first time they have been held in such high acclaim since the 1998 season.

Liberty's offense has combined to score 85 points in its wins over Glenville State and North Greenville, that doesn't bode for a Western Carolina defense that has struggled over the past couple of seasons.

Liberty has plenty of versatility on offense, with running backs Rashad Jennings, Zach Terrell, coupled with the precision passing skills of Brock Smith and receiver Dominic Bolden.

Western Carolina dominated Shorter 35-0, but was blanked by Florida State 69-0. Jayson Williams has rushed for 97 yards and a 5.4 average, with quarterback Andy Horn passing for 307 yards thus far. Marquel Pittman and Donald James have 11 receptions each.

Liberty 42, Western Carolina 20

This is a really tough one. I feel pretty strongly that last year's Cats would've beaten last year's Flames. BUT, this isn't last year is it. I sense that this game will be closer than Mr. C predicted. With a pistol to my head ... Western.

I agree that you didn't match up well against us for the Elon game last year. And I don't think that game was a true representation of your program. And, yes, I expect a much better matchup this year. And you may be deserving of the top 25 ranking. I just have a problem with the Flames being heralded as a phenominal team after playing two D2 games and the schedule you played last year. BTW, there was a solid reason that was your worst game last year. Think about it.

Where has anyone said we were phenomenal? We have said we have the chance to be very good but have to prove it.

Last year's Elon game we were beaten, and beaten bad. Ask people who have been around Liberty, not fans, but people that have been around them, and they will tell you that game is the only game that they've seen Liberty come out and just quit in since Coach Rocco go here.

Div II plays the same game with the same rules. Of course it helps you prepare.

I picked Liberty but expect WCU to show that they are for real. Liberty by less than 13, no matter how high the score.

SuperJon
September 12th, 2008, 07:56 PM
The points scored in the first two games don't really mean anything.

The thing I take from the first two games is that Brock Smith has been throwing the ball well. Yes, it was against Division II teams, but his passes were still where they were supposed to be, he made good decisions, and he had good touch on the ball. This time last year we couldn't say that.

I also take from those two games that our secondary is playing better than I've ever seen them. They're flying to the ball and hitting extremely hard. I normally don't do predictions, but I'd be willing to say the secondary causes at least one turnover tomorrow.

The last thing I take from it is that our return game hasn't fallen off from last year. Yes, they were Division II schools, but the fundamentals of catching the ball and finding a seam are the same at every level.

And I agree with that. It'll be a good test. I've just been impressed by our team from a pure football standpoint, not because of who we were playing but because of how we were clicking. We also had a bad fourth quarter this past week and it really woke the team up. I'd rather have the bad fourth quarter or bad game against a DII than against, I don't know, Elon.

I disagree about the different between the Big South and SoCon. To me, there's a difference, but it's not what you're implying.

Western was better than I thought they'd be. I knew they'd play this game tough and try to prove something. They reminded me a lot of Liberty in 2006.

A couple dumb plays for Liberty really changed the game. On a 3rd down stop, Liberty was called for roughing the passer (the call was right) that gave Western a first down and they scored.

After going up 19-7, Western had a player break a tackle and score a touchdown. A stop on that series and it could be a different game.

Liberty had chances and didn't convert. That's the sign of a team still growing and learning how to win and how to win on the road. However, a win is a win is a win. A road win is a road win is a road win. Playing on the road is something we haven't been very good at (2-20 out of conference since 2002 before tonight). We had to learn how to win on the road before we could learn how to dominate on the road.

Whoever said we have to improve to beat Elon, they're exactly right. We still have things we have to fix and have to get better at. The beauty of it is that it's just week 3, and we don't play them until week 13.

Just because we only "squeaked by" doesn't mean anything. You can read too much into one game. Elon squeaked by WCU last year 38-36 on the same field LU just won on. Same with the Citadel. Also, you co-champs Wofford "squeaked by" at WCU last year by the same margin the reigning Big South Champs won by at WCU. I'd be willing to bet that WCU wins at least 1-2 conference games if not more this year as they are much improved.

I think you guys are going to have to win more games against better teams to make believers out many of the SoCon faithful. Yes WCU has gotten better, but they were still the last place team from a year ago. They will still to prove themselves to the rest of the league as well. And if they don't finish any higher than they did last year it kinda makes this win seem less important.

We will have our chances this year. Our next game is @YSU on 9/27. Yes, they are down this year, but that's still not an easy place to play. Then our big south games remain, and 2 more OOC games with Lafayette and Elon.

I listened to the game and it was not pretty. There were a number of times I thought WCU was going to turn this game around. Looking at the stats, frankly this game should not have been this close. Gotta give big ups to the Catamounts for stepping up the defense after the first drive. Some bad breaks either way and this is a different game entirely if those things dont happen or happen even a little differently. Good luck in your next game and hope to hear about a success story for coach Wagner and the boys at Whitmire Stadium. May our paths cross on the field again someday WCU fans!

If I was Liberty I'd be concerned about the offense.

If there's anything I'm concerned about it's NOT the offense. Our offense shattered school and conference records for scoring last year, and we had 89 points in our first 2 games this year. The only thing our offense didn't do yesterday was put it in the end zone when in the red zone. I chalk that up as a fluke, and don't expect it to happen again. That was also the difference in it being a 2+ score victory to being as close as it was.

The only thing our offense didn't do yesterday was put it in the end zone when in the red zone. I chalk that up as a fluke.......

obviously, the WCU defensive unit had nothing to do with this "fluke"

SuperJon
September 14th, 2008, 12:18 PM
Western made stops when they needed to. You can't call us not scoring a "fluke." It's called playing a team that's trying to prove something and them making plays. It's called our guys making absolutely stupid penalties taking us from 3rd and 1 or 2 to 3rd and 6 or 7. It wasn't a fluke.

We still have a lot to prove. No one will deny that. However, there was one goal for Saturday night, and that goal was to "win on the road." When you're rebuilding a program from the ground up, you focus on the small things and eventually those small things build up into the bigger ones. Last year we won a conference championship. If we can take that championship, duplicate it, and then add "winning on the road" to it, we will have a very good shot at the playoffs. Do we still have work to do before YSU? Definitely. However, even if we have a lot of work, or if we didn't "prove" anything to you guys, we still achieved our goal for Saturday night. Quite frankly, we have nothing to prove to the fans of the SoCon. We have to go out and take care of our business and things should take care of themselves. If we win the games we're supposed to win then things should work out the way we want them to.

jcmanson
September 14th, 2008, 01:17 PM
fluke
n. "a chance occurrence"

Liberty scoring less than 30 points for the first time in 9 games is a fluke i.e. a chance occurrence, a rare happening.

That doesn't mean WCU's defense didn't have something to do with it. They obviously did. That doesn't mean our penalties or lack of execution didn't have something to do with it. They obviously did.

WCU LawCat
September 14th, 2008, 07:40 PM
These are my game and team observations.

Game
It could have gone either way at any point. Both teams made mistakes at bad times. The WCU QB was pressured hard at critical times. WCU was 1st and goal down 6 in the 4th and the QB was sacked. That was followed by a delay of game I think. The play clock haunted our QB more than the LU D-Line. WCU settled for a FG and was still down (which ended up being the final score). Another interesting turn of events was the LU FG that would have put them up 7-9 but a flag on WCU for "leaping" took the points off the board and gave LU half the distance to the goal and an automatic 1st down. That resulted in a TD and possibly the difference in the game.

Liberty's QB overthrew his target several times when he did throw. Solid O-Line. Solid D-Line. Coaches made good offensive adjustments at half.

WCU's QB needs to manage the game better. The play clock killed him. Wasted timeouts and delay penalties. handful of dropped balls and a few thrown behind receivers. Quan Warley looked good running the ball but we did not stick with it. LB's played really well. Hearns is dangerous from anywhere on the field.

The REAL difference in the game is simple. The WCU players still need to learn that if you Believe that you are suppose to win and are going to win then you will win. When the game came down to the wire I don't think the WCU offense or QB believed they were going to take the game by the horns and win.

The good thing about last night's type of game was that Briggs would've told the boys in the locker room that they "were almost there" and "we are competing" blah, blah, blah. Wagner, from an unnamed source, knocked about 2 stacks of chairs over on the way into the locker room and verbally tore the team a new one telling them losing is NEVER accepted and that there problem was they've lost for so long, they keep that same mentality. But, I also don't think your team, nor coaches truly expected to have to work as hard as they had to for the win (regardless of what they said about Western in pregame interviews). At the start of the second quarter with a score of 7 to 3 in favor of Western, Liberty had the ball on the Western 49 yard line, on a 4th down and 3 yards to go for a first down. What would almost any team do in this situation? the game is not out of hand, there is almost 3 full quarters of game remaining and Liberty does not punt - but decides to goes for the first down - Western's line holds, resulting in a Liberty fumble, which loses a yard, but Liberty does recovers their fumble. This is either a team that has supreme confidence in their offense or one that had NO respect for the defense. I'm sure it was the latter.

I don't think it was the latter at all. I think it was having confidence in the offense. When you have a quarterback who is 6'3 260 you think that he can get two yards on a quarterback sneak. He just came up and started to run before he had the ball. The WCU defense didn't cause that fumble.

Also, if you look at the articles written by Chris Lang, our starting center said that you guys were stunting and slanting all night and that's what stopped our run game more than putting 8 in the box. They respected you guys, but they also respected our quarterback and RBs abilities.

Just to be technical here.... it was 4th and 3 yards, not 2.

Obviously, once again - you saw a entirely different game that I did. I saw him hit the line with ball in tow...... and stopped dead at the line of scrimmage. In your version, had be been playing against one of those Div II defenses Liberty saw the last two weeks, results would have been the same...... xoopsx

Oh, way to take a cheap shot. Good job on that one.

We saw him take the snap and never have the ball. That's why the ball came up in the air before going down instead of going straight down. The Western fans around us said the same thing.

ok.... the observation doesn't make sense either

The observation is you guys have sucked in the past, currently suck in the present and all bets are you will continue to suck in the future....perhaps you should consider moving to a conference where you actually CAN compete week-in and week-out.....if for no other reason so the managers won't have to keep re-stacking the chairs that Butterbean knocks over in frustration.....

Said he was here for 5 years and he "ain't going anywhere!" xeekx

The brother means business and it's about time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO WCU!!! BEAT PC!!!

Can you smell what Coach Butterbean is cooking?

Well, we took an a$$ kicking last year, there is no doubt. When you talk about scoring at will, you must mean Elon's win over PC. Other than last year, which other games do you think your mountain boys scored at will in?

You're right.....scoring at will is a little stretch, kind of got carried away....how about winning at will.....is that more accurate?

"The Appalachian and Western rivalry dates back to 1932 with the Mountaineers holding a 53–18–1 advantage over the Catamounts."

The Battle For the Old Mountain Jug Trophy Series: Appalachian State leads, 24–6, with WCU winning 4 of their 6 from 1981-1984.
