UMass QB Coen heads up FCS players of the week
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Quarterback Liam Coen of Massachusetts safety Dominique Davenport of Coastal Carolina and kickoff returner Gerald Stevenson of Charleston Southern have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Liam Coen, Massachusetts, 6-2, 220, Senior, Quarterback, Newport, R.I.
Coen helped the Minutemen to a 45-42 win on the road over Holy Cross, throwing for 395 yards. He went 25-for-36 with three touchdowns through the air. He also ran for a one-yard score in the first quarter. Coen tallied his ninth-career 300-yard passing game, as well as his ninth-career three-TD game. Coen's 25 completions rank 12th most in UMass' single-game record book, while his 395 yards through the air are the sixth-best single-game total in school history.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dominique Davenport, Coastal Carolina, 5-11, 205, Junior, Safety, Bonaire, GA.
Davenport set a school record with 20 tackles Sunday against Colgate, breaking the old record by five in a 23-19 loss. He had 11 solo shots against the Raiders, including two drive-ending stops in the game, as well as one tackle-for-loss. Davenport's 20 tackles tied him for the fourth-most in a single game in Big South Conference history and the second-most ever by a defensive back. Davenport’s 11 solo tackles were also a school record for a single game.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gerald Stevenson, Charleston Southern, 5-10, 170, Wide Receiver/Kick Returner, Naples, FL.
Stevenson set a Big South single-game record with 255 kickoff return yards on seven returns Saturday at No. 13 Wofford in a 41-23 loss, averaging 36.4 yards per return. He returned the opening kickoff 47 yards to set up CSU's first touchdown of the game, and later had a 61-yard return that set up another scoring drive. Stevenson gave Charleston Southern great field position all night. Three times his returns gave CSU starting possessions inside Terrier territory. Five of Stevenson's returns were greater than 30 yards (47, 32, 36, 61, 48). He finished the night with 302 all-purpose yards, the second-most in a game in Big South history.
