The first blog by Brandon Williams...starts with TSU talk, but then turns to SHSU-PV. This is going to be a great week for the blog -- hope all fans on both sides of the SHSU-PV match-up contribute!

Keys to a SHSU victory...

1) Establishing the run, as it will help Rhett Bomar and company keep their distance from Zach East, who will have to be ready for both aerial and ground games being strong. I am not too worried about the aerial attack, but if both aerial and ground games are going about things well, it helps the offensive line, which had a nice performance in week one.

2) Special teams play. SHSU should have an advantage here and they need to make PV work for the field position. If PV has more field to cover, the SHSU defense, which has question marks, has more room for error.

3) Taking a lead early. I think if SHSU gains the lead early, especially if they get one in which PV would have to score twice to catch up, it will be difficult on a PV team that has not had to play from behind this year and does not have much experience in coming back from behind to win.

This should be AGS game of the week. Where's agsadmin to make this thread a "sticky?"

Keys to victory for PVAMU

Pressure Bomar! On passing downs, the DL MUST pressure Bomar to make errant throws/decisions while backers (LBs-nickel backs) attempt to cover while giving up the "short" underneath.
Limit the SHSU rushing attack. I don't think they can be stopped 100% (or maybe so, depends upon the overall "health" of the SHSU O-line).
For PV, we MUST rush the ball EFFECTIVELY. In order to setup our passing game, we must rush effectively and effortlessly.
Stretch the field. We must go downfield to keep the safeties from getting involved near the LOS on run plays and on our short passing patterns.
We must be "smart" w/ special teams' play. Kicking and punting effectively to maximize potential field position.
We must NOT become one-dimensional on offense. (all run and zero pass)
Don't give SHSU coaching staff the power to anticipate our next move(s) on offense OR defense.

Chron on this week's coverage of SHSU-PV...

As for the Chron's plans.....a lot's going to depend on our good "friend" Ike in the Gulf. I can tell you that I will be out at both schools this week and will update the blog on any developments. I will be at the game Saturday night (again, depending on Ike) and hope we can get a live blog so those who can't make the game can folllow the action.

Per Bobby Williams at Bearkat Partners today playing the game thursday is "not an option." The game will be saturday if it is played. Right now all plans are to play the game.

Whitten on SLC Teleconference -- paraphrased as always. :)

(on PV) Nine starters on offense from one of the top offensive teams in FCS. A good football team on Saturday night. Had a bye week, anxious to play again. Need to play clean and play well to win this football game. PV has a good team.

(on Depth with Injuries) One of the positives from opener, get out to a lead and play everybody in second half and realized how thin we are in places. Some of younger guys on line will have to get up to speed in a hurry. Secondary, we have inexperienced guy. We are in pretty good shape with our starters, in college football, you never know when you are going to lose a guy. As a staff, our greatest concern is our depth and can we handle as much as guys getting hurt, how much of that can we handle?

(on PV defense) PV has had great success on the defensive side. All-American with East, makes tons of plays. We need a challenge and get a better evaluation. We're excited about PV coming in here.

A little write-up on what was done to prepare for a possible move of the game...the plan is not to move it and get it going as scheduled...

Sam Houston State athletic director Bobby Williams said Tuesday afternoon there was talk about possibly moving the game to Friday or pushing the start time up earlier on Saturday, but with the hurricane now projected to head further south toward the Corpus Christi area, the contest is scheduled to go on as usual at 6 p.m.

Williams said they had talked with Huntsville High School athletic director and head football coach Mitchell Coey about moving the Hornets’ game against St. Pius to Thursday so the Bearkats could play Friday, if necessary.

“We explored several options, but right now we plan to play the game as it was originally scheduled,” Williams said. “We didn’t talk with Prairie View, but we did bring up the possibility of playing on Friday with coach Coey and moving the Hornets’ game to Thursday, but that’s about it.

From SHSU's President...

To the University Community -

Although it is still very early to make definitive decisions concerning the operations and events at SHSU with hurricane Ike looming, it is our present intention to remain open and to hold the Parent's Weekend and the Saturday football game as planned. We will monitor the storm closely and stay in constant contact with local and state officials. If a decision is made to close the university or to cancel scheduled weekend activities we will notify you as soon as that decision is made.

Article from PV student newspaper...

The Panthers will need to play well offensively and defensively, because this Saturday they travel to FCS (formerly 1-AA) adversary and Southland foe, Sam Houston State. "I feel great about the game, but I know it will be a big challenge," said East, "We are going to go prepare for them by watching film and breaking down their tendencies." The Panthers are looking to show college football fanatics they are here to stay with a big time victory over a very capable opponent. The Panthers will be studying all week to get set for the game that is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in Huntsville, Texas.

Update from GoBearkats...

"We are going to make every effort to play the game. At this point, we will not play Friday or Saturday. Our only option is to play Sunday. We are getting in touch with athletic officials at the Southland Conference and Prairie View to see if this option is workable for all parties ," SHSU Director of Athletics Bobby Williams said. "Please continue to check our web site at www.gobearkats.com for updates."

Game is reportedly canceled...

Now, SHSU has an open week, October 5th. We're seeing other schools fill scheduling holes created by the storms in the Gulf.

I first went to the SWAC because they share our same conference footprint (for the most part). A quick glance shows three schools with open weeks and 11 games -- thank goodness for a 12 game schedule this year.

Oct. 5 Available Schools

Alabama State
Mississippi Valley State
Note: They have a game in Baton Rouge this weekend that should happen, but worth keeping an eye on.

FYI --

Whitten said Thursday afternoon that the game will be made up next season. Under the original arrangement, Prairie View was to play here this season and Sam Houston State was to travel to Houston in 2009. Instead, the Panthers will play at Bowers Stadium in ’09 and the Bearkats will play at Prairie View in 2010.

And the article also mentions the real reason this game did not happen if it would've ended up being okay to occur -- the lack of transportation for PV to SHSU.

Hopefully this opens the eyes of fans who felt that our AD dropped the ball here and just did not want to get the game in...

I think it's easy to see that this was purely weather related, but people are always going to have an opinion either way.

It was weather-related and that issue came first, but if the game would've been able to occur on Sunday -- it came down to the lack of transportation.

PV did not run and does not deserve the reputation of another SWAC squad from a few years ago, which was an issue beaten to death...

For our PV friends...

SHSU AD on halftime show said we are working to flip-flop the SHSU/PV series. Due to an agreement made, the home-and-home was pushed back with SHSU hosting in 2009 and PV hosting in 2010 due to Hurricane Ike.

SHSU currently has road trips to Western Illinois and Baylor in 2010 with Gardner-Webb coming to us. AD says we have possibly three weeks in a row with PV on the road. We would like to be at home instead of having three straight.

Date in 2010 is 9/11/2010 for the tentative SHSU trip to PV. Hoping this all works out...so, in final -- SHSU to PV in 2009 and PV to SHSU in 2010 is the hopeful plan of our AD.

SHSU 2009 schedule: at PV, vs Western Illinois, vs North Dakota State, at FBS
SHSU 2010 schedule: vs Gardner-Webb, vs PV, at Baylor, at Western Illinois

I was at the Texas A&M game today...the PVA&M band performed at half...Kats missed out on that this year, they were great.

PV band was suspended for the SHSU contest. There was an ongoing investigation related to hazing. So, we'll get the marching band in 2010 thanks to Ike -- may have been one of the better things to come from it.

Anyone know what happened with that investigation?
