Liberty leads Coastal Carolina 7-3 at the break. The Chants picked off a pass in the closing minute of the first half and booted a field goal as time expired at the break to get on the board.

Saint3333

Actually it's because

1) JMU now has three losses and will likely lose another one and thus miss the playoffs.

2) SC State lost to Hampton, that was there only chance for a quality win so they miss the playoffs.

3) CCU struggles with one of the worst 1-AA teams in Liberty. A team like Coastal needs to have statement games (only beat G-Webb by 3 and now this Libertygame) to get in the playoffs especially when their two "quality" wins are looking worse this week.

JALMOND

Win or lose, an OT game against a team the caliber of Liberty this late in the season cannot help Coastal's playoff chances when you are trying to steal a spot from one of the heavy conferences.

Get real, CCU fans.

After this debacle, ASU has to depend on the Citadel romp, GSU romp, and the win at Waffle House today to keep us up to where the Coasty win "propelled us." 'Cause as it looks now, the CCU win in Boone was rather meaningless. Just a good exhibition game.

You play to the level of your Big South competition? Sorry. That works for a Furman or App State, consistently playing in the Socon. That works for Montana State and Portland State, consistently playing in the Big Sky. How can Coastal, playing in a conference without an auto-bid, claim to be one of the eight at large teams with this type of win over a team like Liberty?

At least Harvard last year was making statements late in the season in their games.

Sorry, Roky, ain't buying it. Hard to find a team more "inferior" than Liberty. You are trying to steal a spot from a team in the heavy conferences (A-10, Big Sky, Gateway and SoCon). Cal Poly is in sort of the same boat than you in that they also play in a conference that doesn't get the auto-bid. Still, most publications will say that the Great West is a stronger conference than the Big South. Most people will say that Cal Poly's opponent today is much stronger than Liberty. In the real world, I doubt you would take Cal Poly's spot unless they completely fall apart the rest of the season. Coastal would give the teams in the heavy conferences a much better game than the rest of the Big South, but are you really, at this point, one of the eight best at-large teams in the country?

Actually - the Great West is one of the stronger conferences and the Big South one of the weakest. My point is that we had a pretty tough first half schedule and finished 4-1. Our conference is weak but we have been winning. Yes, I do currently think we deserve a shot at the playoffs. If we lose then I'll reverse my position.

However I still don't see CCU getting ahead of these teams and I don't think you do either. Of course there's still a lot of football to be played and with all the parity out there many of these teams could be 7-4 at year-end and then CCU would probably make it over them.

It is funny how everyone wants to criticize us when most teams haven't had outstanding seasons - only a few have. But the reality is that most teams have barely won over teams that they are 'superior' to or lost to bad teams.

What are we doing now, comparing Liberty to VMI or Yale or SE Louisiana. Sorry, I can't see Coastal getting in while stumbling through the latter half of a Big South conference schedule. You cannot afford to win ugly, not with the conference you play in. Furman has been winning ugly within the conference but you certainly cannot compare the Big South to the SoCon in terms of strength. Montana State has been winning ugly in the Big Sky but can you honestly say the Big South is as strong as the Big Sky?

You've had a good season, but put aside your bias and look at this objectively. I think you would agree.

I like your list, Saint. I think others better than Coastal right now, but maybe outside your list includes Richmond and JMU from the A-10, E Washington from the Big Sky and N Iowa from the Gateway. Coastal fans will point out that they beat JMU (they have all year), but I think the Dukes are playing better than Coastal right now. Just my opinion.
E.Washington lost to Weber today. Isn't Weber St. considered inferior to E. Washington?

Montana St has only played 2 conference games and lost 1.

Hardly. Some had this picked as an upset. It was pretty easy when given the arguments. Weber played a great game in Missoula against the Griz and also has played the Cats tough (take a look at the Big Sky Preview thread here at AGS). Clearly, Weber is a much better team than Liberty, and, after today, I'd say a much better team than Coastal.

Everything is different when you play real teams week in and week out.

Like I said, I want Coastal in the playoffs, because if Furman beats GSU that means CCU would most likely play @ Furman in the first round. Chant fans aren't going to like how it looks when a pretender meets a good team in late-season form. I mean, CCU has what, 1 player that would start for Furman (Simpson)? Maybe 2 or 3.

25+ teams in I-AA could play CCU's schedule and come out 10-1.

I won't say we deserve to be in more than the others but I'll give my opinion on what negatives they have. I say a close win is better than a close loss to an inferior team.

A10
UMass - pretty solid but a loss to Colgate? Isn't UMass superior to Colgate?
UNH - solid
Bill & Mary - loss to 3-5 Rhode island

Big Sky
Montana - solid
Montana St. pretty decent
Portland St. - pretty good

Gateway
WKU - solid
YSU - 1 win over a I-AA with a winning record
Ill. St. - pretty good

SoCon
Furman - solid team but winning close ones. Lost to a WCU that doesn't have a winning record.
ASU - solid
GSU - losses to average McNeese and Wofford

Cal Poly - solid

Autobids
Texas St. - solid
Hampton - solid
Lehigh
OVC (who knows???)

Rhode Island is 4-4. Beat Villanova yesterday 48-30.

Coastal will get an idea of their chances from the GPI over the remaining weeks. The games against Liberty and GW are not helping them there, and JMU and SC State losses also don't help. The committee is heavily focused on the criteria that make up the GPI.

Sagarin ratings are out and CCU drops from #17 to #30. Look for similar drop from the other computers.

We knew it would happen due to the conference - but the computers aren't perfect either.

Chiming in with an objective viewpoint here, since I don't really care either way.

I covered the game last night and was stunned at just how ordinary Coastal Carolina is. They play pretty well on defense but offensively, they don't inspire me in the least.

No breakaway running back. No consistent passing game (sure, it showed flashes in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't great for most of the night).

Coastal fans are saying that they let Liberty hang around. Wrong. Liberty let Coastal hang around. And Coastal shouldn't have even been in the game. This Liberty team has lived on making mistakes all year long, and Coastal got lucky because LU continued to make those same errors.

I talked to Bennett afterward and there was a serious look of relief on his face. He knew his team had stolen one.

I've watched a lot of I-AA playoff teams in the Big Sky, Southland and A-10. Coastal Carolina, at least the one that showed up last night, is not a playoff team.

Coastal needs to beat somebody up. It needs to beat VMI 41-7 and absolutely dominate the Keydets to show they can play superior football. The Coastal team that showed up last night would have been run off the field by W&M or UMass or Montana.

Sorry, Chants fans. Your team doesn't deserve to be within sniffing distance of the postseason if that's the best you can show against a 1-6 team that is playing with very little confidence.

Chris? Objectivity?

I have admitted that it was an ugly win - but a win is a win. Many teams have lost against inferior competition and we have yet to do so.

Yeah, objective rok. Just because I cover LU doesn't mean I give a s**t either way whether they win or lose. I'm just paid to report.

And what I saw didn't do Coastal any favors. If this had been the first night that Coastal had struggled like this, then I'd probably gloss over it and say it was a blip and that everybody has a bad night, yada, yada.

I have no grudge against Coastal. None whatsoever. I like Coach Bennett and I like all of the Coastal folk that I've met. That just wasn't a playoff team I watched last night. And if Coastal doesn't beat the snot out of VMI, I'm not going to be the only one who feels that way. (Beating the snot out of Mansfield, Savannah and Chuck South won't prove anything to anyone).

I should add: My opinion means nothing to the committee though, so it's all just talk. :)

....hear the footsteps....we are coming!! This is not the 0-11 team you beat by 7 points last year....and your last minute magic has played out.

I know we have a neon bullseye and you guys will be ready. Hopefully we are too. You always play tough and if we aren't prepared then you will beat us - no question.

You ain't kidding! Our defense has kept us in these games thus far. I'm not sure why our offense can't get it together until it comes down to it but thankfully, they have pulled together and taken care of business when it matters the most. Now, if we can do that consistently at the beginning 58 minutes of the game and keep it going throughout, we will be soooooo dangerous! We have the talent on the roster, no doubt about it.

But in their defense, they won the battle of the two worst teams in I-AA last week by smashing Savannah St.

Do you guys realize that IF VMI beats CCU next week, and GWU can slip past Liberty, there will be an unbreakable three-way tie for first place in the Big South standings should both CCU and GWU beat Charleston Southern?

VMI would have the tie break over CCU BUT GWU would have it over VMI. CCU would then have the tie break over GWU. It's a circle of weirdness.

Tri champs in a five-team league. We gots ta get some mo teams. Scheduling seven non conference games a year has got to be a tough task.
