Houston Chronicle preview entitled, "Bearkats to launch air assault".

Don't like how they have in the online version (not sure about print), used a picture of Bomar wearing Sooner red...that's long in the past. The team and Bomar are focused on him wearing Bearkat orange.

Rhett Bomar has four good reasons to be excited about returning under center for the Bearkats following a 2007 season cut short by injury.

The Sam Houston State senior quarterback already had three of his reasons in place, as wide receivers Catron Houston, Trey Payne and Justin Wells bring a combined 100 receptions back to an offense that ranked among the Football Championship Subdivision’s best last season.

The fourth came in February, when coach Todd Whitten delivered 6-5 junior college transfer Jason Madkins to the receiving corps.

Madkins scares me. I read about him before he signed w/ SHSU.

We have our ear to the grounds of HSV. xreadx

I'm making fun of their fans motto last season where they thought Bomar would "hang 70" on all the teams they played.

It was 'Hang 60'...which is what UCA promptly did to the Bobcats. ;)

Our fan base, atleast the one represented on KatFans.com, seem to get hooked on something and stick to it...whether it be positive or negative.

I wonder why they did not mention the Gardner Webb game in the article? It is not going to be a cake walk.

Yet, it's not as high profile a game as recent contests against Montana and NDSU. Not many in Houston know who G-Webb is...

First scrimmage in the books...the bad news is that John Dirk, an All-SLC lineman (dad is the Def Coord and his sister plays on the SHSU soccer team) broke his leg and he's out for the season...

Senior quarterback Rhett Bomar completed 14 passes for 159 yards with transfer wide receiver Jason Madkins catching five of the throws to highlight an hour-and-a-half situational scrimmage to complete the first week of preseason camp for the Sam Houston State football team Saturday.

Bomar threw for four touchdowns, two for three yards in goal line situation practice, another for 12 yards and the final one to Madkins for a 55-yard score.

Crap, any chance of getting a medical redshirt?

I hope so, though he is just a senior, not a redshirt senior, so he could just use a normal redshirt.

Dirk used his redshirt at Missouri, if you read his bio. He'd have to get a medical redshirt.

SHSU does not tend to use the term "redshirt senior", which I don't blame them, because it is confusing.

Then you have 'grey shirts' when an athlete postpones his enrollment in college...though you don't hear about that one too much.

That sucks for you guys...weren't you a little thin in the O-line to begin with?

I think that the Kats are fine at O-Line. Even in years we've lost a few guys more than we typically do along the line, it's always been one of our Kat strong suits (outside of when Wade Pate was behind center, because he held the ball too long).

Its highly unlikely he would get approval for a medical redshirt unless he was injured during his freshman year which caused the redshirt at Missouri. Hopefully, they changed some of the requirements because I was in a some what similiar situation and got a denial. Since my college career ended because of injury that's something I would never wish on everyone. I hope there's a loophole where he could get that year back. The NCAA is so tricky...

We are VERY thin at OL......Especially since transfers Mossmeyer and Andrew Johnson are no longer on the roster.

74 Woods, Hadji LB 6-2 280 Fr.
64 Best, Travis OL 6-2 302 Jr.
52 Bowersox, Jordan OL 6-2 277 Sr.
61 Crockett, Chris OL 6-3 283 So.
65 Dirk, John OL 6-3 285 Sr.---out for season
71 Fairchild, R. C. OL 6-3 294 Sr.
53 Grimes, Nick OL 5-11 278 Sr.
63 Saunders, Aaron OL 6-7 314 Sr.
78 Schmidt, Hunter OL 6-3 304 Jr.
67 Smith, Riley OL 6-4 275 Fr.
73 Watson, Travis OL 6-4 289 Fr.
77 Hobson, Kaleb OT 6-6 255 Fr.

Dirk and Schmidt were only returning starters to the line. Now that leaves only Schmidt. Now possibly one of the freshman will have to step up. TT, Saunders was being moved to LT during the spring. I am thinking that red-shirt freshman Travis Watson will get thrown into the mix. I think he was a RT in high school.

Six upper-classmen remaining. We're lacking in depth, but out front five is still pretty solid in my eyes. I'm curious to see how the freshmen, redshirt freshmen namely when the real battle in the trenches begin...

The good thing is with a strong running game (Bomar included) and a potent passing attack -- that should be able to help the line. TW may want to throw a net out on any FBS transfers he can get on the OL for next year with the seniors we are losing.

Lets hope the OL can gel now with Dirk out so RB isn't running for his life all season. It is ok for him to run when he wants to or it is called for. It is another when he has to run.

Well, then if Saunders is moving in a RT, who has taken Brandon Hale's spot at LT?

From Kevin Gore...

While the consensus among Southland Conference football followers is that McNeese State is the favorite, another team receiving high praise in the preseason is Sam Houston.

What's to like?

How about a veteran quarterback, Rhett Bomar?

I agree and I think some people put too much stock into them. These guys have been practicing against each other day in and day out. They know each other, the schemes, etc.

We won't really know until East Central Oklahoma and even then, I'm not sure how much the Kats will show...
