Congrats, and good luck this weekend against UCD.
I haven't even heard of Sul Ross State or LA State...did they move to D-II or D-III or just fold up football altogether or what?

Well, obviously you did NOT win a National Championship, as you didn't play it out on the field. ;)

Pecan Bowl, hmph.

Yikes, just looked at your records in the 60's...

4 losing seasons (1960, 61, 62, 63) including 1 winless season (1962), followed by 3 undefeated seasons (1965, 68, 69) and 4 bowl wins (1964, 65, 68, 69). What happened in 1964?

Darrell Mudra was hired in 1963, and with a new direction by the administration turned the program around.

Wow, I sure hope he won some COY awards for that!

Heck, Mudra is in the NCAA Football Hall of Fame... I did some checking and he's in the Halls of Fame at five different schools as a coach: Eastern Illinois, North Dakota State, Western Illinois, Northern Iowa, and Adams State (a DII school).

Mudra left to Coach the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL in 1966.

Here's a short bio from the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame

Coach. Nicknamed “Dr. Victory” his career win record was 200-81-4 made him second only to Eddie Robinson of Grambling as the winningest Division 1-AA coach at the time of his retirement. Darrell coached every level of the sport from peewee’s to high school, college and one professional team. The 1946 South High graduate played his college sports at Peru State where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. His first coaching job was at Tekamah where he coached all sports. From there he went on to coach in college, starting at Huron, then Northern Colorado, Adams State, then North Dakota State. He left the college scene in 1966 to give the pros a try coaching the Montreal Alouettes for one year. In 1967 he returned to the college ranks heading the program at the University of Arizona. From there it was to Western Illinois, Florida State, Eastern Illinois and finished at the University of Northern Iowa. Darrell earned his Doctor of Education degree in 1965 at Northern Colorado U. , his thesis was “ Study of Current College Football Coaching Practices in Light of Selected Theories of Learning.” This was later published in book form as Freedom in the Huddle, a psychology of coaching textbook. Darrell retired from active coaching in 1988 and he and his wife now reside in Florida.

Gil,
Spent this past weekend with Darell Mudra at UNI's Homecoming. Still the same sharp old coach. He and my offensive line coach, Walt Klinker, were, by far, the two most influential men in my life. Darrell was renowned for his motivational speeches in which he cited Jesus Christ, Socrates, Maslow and Shakespeare. You never knew what the ***** he was talking about then, but suddenly, 10 years later, the light finally went on. I use skills to this day that he and Klinker taught me.

Pic of him at UNI Homecoming with (left) Dwayne "Bubba" Price, DT in '85 ,and (in background) Jersey Jermier, fine, football-friendly Associate AD back then (also AGS's own "Pantherpower"'s father:

Also spent three weeks in Florence, Italy, with Darrell and Jersey coaching the Florence Apaches of the Italian American Football League. Great stories from that trip!

Long live Darrell Mudra!

Cool picture.

Mudra laid the groundwork for Bison football.
Only 2 losing seasons since 1964.

Like to hear some of those stories sometime.

You will when we hook up at the Border Marker game, 11/12. Let's just say that the NCAA's Compliance Office was probably understaffed back then.

   ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

j/k!

He certainly laid the foundation for UNI's continued success when he alighted from Eastern Illinois in 1983. Apart from Earle Bruce's disaster year and the boring Dunbar years, Panther fortunes have been in the hands of "The Family".

Sul Ross is in the same university system as Sam Houston State and Texas State. The Texas State University System. As many of you know we are pretty much the flagship university of the system...

Before there was turf and a dome, there was grass and bleachers. Before there were victories, there were losses. Many of them.

The incoming freshmen football players at North Dakota State in 1962 witnessed a 0-10 season. By the time they left in 1965, they were unbeaten national champions.

It was the start of a storied football tradition that produced eight national titles and a run of legendary coaches and players. Somebody, however, had to start it.

“I feel like we’re the cornerstone,” said Ken Rota, a running back now living in Las Vegas. “We’re the ones that started it all. And maybe started the tradition.”

No “maybe.” They started it. They were the pioneers. Today, they will be rewarded as the first team to be inducted into the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame. The sold-out luncheon at the Holiday Inn starts at 11 a.m.

Most of the players will be there, along with head coach Darrell Mudra and assistant Buck Nystrom.
