Cap’n Cat was once recruited by Mean Gene Okerlund for professional wrestling; Minneapolis, 1986.

In 1822, the South Carolina Legislature passed an "An Act to Establish a Competent Force to act as a Municipal Guard for the Protection of the City of Charleston and Vicinity." Land on the North end of Marion Square was selected for an arsenal and guard house and in 1829, the architect, Frederick Wesner, completed the building which was known as The Citadel. A similar facility was constructed in Columbia, South Carolina which was known as The Arsenal. State troops occupied both sites at a cost of $24,000 a year.

Cap’n Cat is a big talker when it comes to his sexploits. He couldn’t get it up with a crane, anymore.

On December 20, 1842, The South Carolina Legislature passed an act establishing the South Carolina Military Academy. The Citadel and The Arsenal were converted into educational institutions and students replaced the state troops. In 1845, the role of The Arsenal was changed to the instruction of freshmen. As a result, cadets spent their first year in Columbia and transferred to The Citadel for the remaining three years. The South Carolina Military Academy became known for its high academic standards and strict military discipline.

The Citadel has gone undefeated at Johnson Hagood in six seasons (1956, 1959, 1978, 1981 and 1988) and the Bulldogs reeled off 16 consecutive victories there from 1980 to 1982.

In 1992, Marshall and The Citadel played at Johnson Hagood in front of a record "standing room only" crowd of 23,025.

The historic facility, however, gained national attention during the summer of 1999 when prior crewmen from the CSS Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy battleship, were unearthed from underneath the stadium. The remains of the sailors from the Confederate sub were reinterred at nearby Magnolia Cemetery.

Cap’n Cat’s favorite states are: South Dakota, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, North Dakota and Wisconsin.

When the guns fired at Fort Sumter in 1861, Citadel cadets were there, following their governor’s orders, determined to show that they were willing and able to defend the Southern States. Teen aged cadets from VMI, The Citadel, the University of Alabama, and Georgia Military Institute fought bravely in the Civil War. Hundreds of alumni from these schools, especially VMI and The Citadel, volunteered as Confederate officers, proving that patriotism, state loyalty, and service were not empty words.

"Big Red" looks exactly like South Carolina's blue and white state flag-except it has a red field. It is the official spirit flag of The Citadel Corps of Cadets. This flag has been associated with the college since the beginning of the Civil War.

In the weeks following South Carolina's withdrawal from the United States in December 1860, a variety of "secession flags" were sewn and flown throughout the new republic. One such banner-a red flag with a white palmetto in its center-was presented to a company of Citadel cadets stationed on Morris Island by the ladies of Hugh E. Vincent's family. Mr. Vincent owned much of the island, which is on the south side of the entrance to Charleston harbor. The cadets manned a sand battery of four cannons, and their mission was to protect the harbor and prevent US ships from resupplying the Union troops sequestered in Fort Sumter.

When the Star of the West, entered the harbor on the morning of January 9, 1861, Cadet George Edward Haynesworth of Sumter fired the first hostile shot between North and South. Above the battery, according to the captain of the Star of the West, flew a red flag with a white palmetto.

On December 7 and 9, 1864, the cadets fought against Union forces, successfully defending the railroad line and forcing Union forces to withdraw. The cadets suffered eight casualties at Tulifinny Creek.

As much a fisherman Cap’n Cat brags that he is, the biggest fish he ever caught was only a 10 lb northern pike in Lake Muskegon, MI, in 2006.

Unlike most Citadel customs and traditions, which have developed over a long period of time, the college colors were chosen in the interest of expediency. In the spring of 1899, Cadet Captain John W. Moore, manager of the baseball team, secured permission to take the team on its first road trip. Prior to that time all athletic contests had been staged locally. As other colleges had colors that were displayed in athletic contests, Cadet Moore and two or three friends decided that blue and white made an appropriate combination; they hastily had pennants made in these colors to take along.
Although born out of necessity, the colors were readily accepted by the Corps and have endured to this day.

Symbology: Blue symbolizes the clear sky with unlimited horizons, which foretells of a Citadel cadet's future. White symbolizes purity of thought and actions, honesty and decency - all elements of The Citadel Code, the Honor Code, and the "Whole Person" concept.

Cap’n Cat thinks UNI will trounce NDSU in the UNIDome and will beat Youngstown State handily this season for the eighth year in a row.

Head Coach
Kevin Higgins enters his fourth season as The Citadel’s head football coach. Formerly the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach of the Detroit Lions, Higgins is the Bulldogs’ 23rd head football coach.

The 2007 season has proven to be the most successful for the fourth-year head coach, claiming the Bulldogs’ first seven-win season in 15 years. Higgins also led The Citadel, who finished 7-4, to their second consecutive winning conference record, 4-3, while breaking over 40 school records throughout the season.

Nationally, the Bulldogs finished fourth in scoring, sixth in turnovers lost and 10th in pass efficiency. They led the Southern Conference in total defense and pass efficiency, while finishing second in scoring, third in pass offense and fourth in total offense.

After starting off the 2007 season 2-0, the Bulldogs went on to claim victories at Chattanooga, Western Carolina and VMI. They led an exciting offensive rally to defeat Furman in overtime, 54-51, totaling 641 yards. Lawson collected a record 486 yards, setting a career-high of 386 passing yards - the second highest in school history. The Bulldogs wrapped up their home season with a win against Elon, clinching a tie for third place in the Southern Conference.

In just two seasons, Higgins led the Bulldogs to their first winning conference record in 14 years when they finished the 2006 season 4-3 in SoCon play.
Higgins’ squad won four of their last five competitions, including a homecoming victory over VMI in the “Military Classic of the South” and a dominating 44-7 win at Elon for their final conference win of the season. The Bulldogs went 2-5 in the SoCon and 4-7 overall in Higgins’ first year at The Citadel.

By legislative act of January 28, 1861, the cadets at The Arsenal in Columbia and The Citadel in Charleston were made part of the military organization of the State of South Carolina. They were known as the Battalion of State Cadets and participated in the following engagements from 1861 to 1865. As a result of these services, The Citadel is authorized to carry nine battle streamers:

1. Confederate States Army (larger gray).
2. Star of the West, January 9, 1861.
3. Wappoo Cut, November 1861.
4. James Island, June 1862.

Cap’n Cat’s least favorite states: Illinois, Indiana.

The Citadel prides itself on being a coaching factory. Over the years, The Citadel has become one of the nation's hot spots for young coaches to learn the game and improve their coaching skills. Those skills, both on the field and off the field, have enabled many of them to go on to great careers in college and professional football.

Some of the young coaches that have walked through the gates of the Military College of South Carolina include Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer, former Washington State Head Coach Bill Doba and Maryland Head Coach Ralph Friedgen. One of the most recent former Citadel head coaches, Ellis Johnson, is now the defensive coordinator at South Carolina, while John Zernhelt serves as an assistant coach for the NFL's Tennessee Titans. Former North Carolina State head coach and Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Mike O'Cain also coached at The Citadel in his early days, along with former Army Head Coach Bobby Ross.
