UMass went 8-3 in 1998 (losing twice to UConn and once to Delaware), was awarded an at-large berth, and went on to win the national championship.

Interesting thing about that UMASS season, two of their games were against teams who are now I-A. Buffalo went in 1999, and UCONN went in 2000. UMASS beat Buffalo, and lost to UCONN.

What was Western Kentucky's regular season mark in 02' when they took it all. I don't believe they won the GFC that year.

WKU finished that season 8-3 and were conference co-champs. However, they don't fit the criteria because they lost their season opener to Kansas State.

I miss having UConn around. The home-and-home series that year was a lot of fun; both games were classics, and both teams went on to the playoffs in what was each program's best season ever at the I-AA level.

Check that. Lost to UConn TWICE that season. In a rare circumstance, UMass and UConn met TWICE during the 1998 regular season. Once as a conference game for both, once as a second conference game for one of them (can't remember which one counted it twice).

W&M in 1994. 8-3 with a loss to ACC co-champs UVA (40-16), and close losses to a top-5 JMU team and a 20-9 loss to UMass on the road in a typhoon.

Wins over Delaware (31-7), Furman, Villanova, etc....no playoff bid. Oh, but 7-4 Alcorn State got in...and lost something like 70-7 to Youngstown. Yeah, I am still pissed.

Northeastern in 2003 went 8-4 with a win over the #1 team in the country and made them go 15-1 (DELAWARE) for the rest of the season and still didnt make the playoffs. In 2002 NU won the conference with Maine as a sidenote. This was also the same year 2003 i believe 4 gateway teams made it and 3 of them were eliminated 1st round.

Under these criteria, Lehigh '03 was 8-3, with their 3 losses at I-A UConn (35-17), by 1 TD to undefeated Penn, and by 1 TD to reg. season undefeated/national runner up Colgate.
