View Full Version : Ohio State QB eying GSU?

The race for Georgia Southern’s starting quarterback job might take an interesting twist with the possible transfer of a blue-chip prospect from a major university.

Ohio State quarterback Antonio Henton has reportedly told his Buckeye teammates he’s headed for GSU, an ESPN writer confirmed to the Statesboro Herald Wednesday. Georgia Southern’s B-term for summer classes begins next week, and second-year GSU coach Chris Hatcher said he couldn’t discuss transfers until then. Henton could not be reached for comment.

Henton, a 6-foot-2, 232 pound Fort Valley native, already has Georgia Southern ties - Eagle offensive coordinator Rance Gillespie was Henton’s high school head coach at Peach County. Henton was tabbed the 2005 Georgia Offensive Player of the Year as a senior when he helped his team to the Class AAA state title, the first in Peach County’s history. He threw for 2,117 yards and 30 touchdowns his senior year and was touted as one of the best multi-threat quarterback prospects in the country coming out of high school.

Henton redshirted the 2006 season at Ohio State and saw limited action in four games last year. If he heads to Georgia Southern, he’d be available immediately and have three seasons of eligibility remaining...

I cannot see Tressel making such a poor decision as that. Pryor is a minimum of 30 lbs from a starter at ANY DI school. I still think he was a mistake in the first place. The buckeye nation has no respect for a hold-out. Although, if he works out, all will be forgotten just as quickly. Clearly Pryor is no Einstein so he will have to play as a frosh. However, I suspect it will just be special teams & possibly some time at X-back to get him used to taking snaps and getting some reads.

As far as Henton leaving, my sources have it as a lock that he is indeed leaving. As to GSU or not, I don't know; but it makes sense. Henton was crushed in spring ball by frosh Joe Bauserman (honestly Bauserman, not yet on scholarship, out-performed Boeckman as well). Talk about a 'diamond in the rough' for the Buckeyes. Pryor arrived early for weight training as well. The writing is "on the wall" for Antonio.

If Henton's transferring to the REAL GSU comes to pass (pun intended) the competition for the QB position this fall will be very very very interesting with the 4 candidates- Chapple, Lowe, Collins, Henton- all having at least 3 years of eligibility remaining.

Of course, with GSU having lost 4 out of 5 o-line starters and opening in Athens, we may need all four.

Hoy:

Nope.. Read the Ohio state forums and you will find that he is actually well thought of, and the "bad apple" business you refer to was one incident, and one incident only, where he was arrested for "soliciting" a undercover female police officer for sex..

Maybe not too bright, but hardly deserving of a "bad apple" label.

Hey, there were times when I was in college that if I the money and opportunity I could well have been arrested for the same thing, and it wouldn't have been a big deal to anyone.

My question is not that the young man was surfing for sex, but why he had to in the first place.. Unless campus life has changed dramatically I should think a stud football player would be overwhelmed with offers of FREE sex from coeds..

Maybe the young undercover police officer was a real stunner? xeekx

Hoya:

Bravo Sierra..

Young folks make mistakes, I believe in most peoples minds this mistake does not equate with robbery, shootings, drugs, etc. It certainly doesn't in mine, and I'm an old fart with a high regard for accountability regarding personal conduct..

Apparently you don't have any teenage or college age children because if you did you'd know you simply cannot throw them out with the trash at the first mistake. EVERYBODY makes a mistake sooner or later.. The object is to learn from that mistake and not repeat it.

But, we just have a difference of opinion on the seriousness of the offense as it relates to a football player and his school that's all.. You are certainly entitled to yours, as I am mine.

Apparently those folks who have to make the tough decisions regarding student athletes at Ohio State didn't think the offense warranted dismissal from the team, much less the University.

So basically it boils down to personal opinion. We all have one.

Jesse

Hoya,

FWIW, today when Coach Jim Tressel was asked about the possibility of this young man transferring to GSU he would not verify or deny the rumor, but he did refer to Antonio Henton as "a good kid"..

Young Mr. Henton is not being "run off" from Ohio State, and from the postings on the Ohio State forum most folks are sad to see him go.

If you are a college age person and you think this "soliciting" charge is such a big deal that it should ruin a young persons opportunity at a college education I respectfully suggest you might have a different opinion a few years down the road when you are a parent.xwhistlex

Actually he is quite the bad apple. I am originally from PA and have heard a lot of negative news about him as far as character is concerned. He stood up the Big 33 All Star Classic which is considered the "Super Bowl" of high school all star games. There has never been a Super Bowl with out a Big 33 player in it. And the work the players do in the community always gives more to the players than the actual game does.

This article was posted the week of the game in Central Pa.

http://blog.pennlive.com/endzone/2008/06/terrelle_pryor_snubs_big_33.html

It is a little bias, but is the main view from people across the state of PA. Oh and the Brewster character he mentions is an Ohio St Alum, and not long after Prior committed to Oh St his mom moved in to a house that is in Brewsters name.

I can't stand that the NCAA gives USC and Ohio State special treatment.
Penn State, I have heard from a friend that plays up there, is investigating the situation.

You are incorrect. The following list is from 2005 statistics, but pretty representative as to which states consistently produce the most NFL players by raw numbers...as you can see, Georgia is 4th...if you break it down per capita, Louisiana and Mississippi would be tops.

That's where they went to high school. There may be a few here and there who moved in, but for all intents and purposes, that's where they're from.

Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio? That is funny as hell. Georgia is about dead even with Florida, Texas, and Cali despite the much higher populations of all those states. Look at Appy and Furman's roster. See where the get the majority of their playmakers from.

I found the 2007 numbers which are slightly different than the 2005, but not a whole lot of change. I took the latest 2007 population estimates per state and ranked the top 14 NFL producing states in order on a per capita basis. To put it in better perspective...if Louisiana had the same population as California, using the ratio of 1 in 60,500, they could expect to have roughly 600 players in the NFL. Conversely, if California had the same population as Louisiana, using the ratio of 1 in 174,000 they could expect to have roughly 25 players in the NFL.

Louisiana...71 or 1/60,500
Mississippi...43 or 1/67,900
South Carolina...53 or 1/83,100
Alabama...51 or 1/90,800
Florida...178 or 1/106,000
Georgia...77 or 1/123,900
Ohio...92 or 1/124,600
Texas...184 or 1/129,900
Virginia...53 or 1/145,500
California...209 or 1/174,600
Michigan...49 or 1/205,500
North Carolina...43 or 1/210,720
Pennsyvania...49 or 1/253,700
Illinois...43 or 1/298,900

I would expect the Moderators to take action here.

This is completely uncalled for.

I have to agree with you Eaglegus2. I think even CitDog has issues with his continued stupidity.

Good luck with the QB. Where does your 3rd QB transfer too or what position does he switch too ?

It said "per capita".

The bad apple comment was referring to any earlier comment about Pryor and it being true. As far as top football states, if we took an All Star team out of PA, OH, FL, CA, TX I strongly believe they would all beat GA.

Because they have higher populations. Per Capita, GA beats OH and PA.

Eaglegus2:

Playing the "devil's advocate" here, I wonder if elcid96 thought you might have just said you Mom had passed away in the way the thread was going, and not taken you seriously? You know, he thought you were "trying to get to him", and he just came back with a smart retort?

I say that because I simply cannot understand how anyone who actually thought you were serious would be so stupid and insensitive as to make such a comeback as elcid96 did..

My Mom was killed by my step-dad when I was 7, (who then had the courtesy to kill himself),so I'm probably about as sensitive about this issue as anyone could be, but I'd prefer to think that elcid96 honestly didn't think you had lost your Mom, and was just trying for a laugh, rather than think he's a total, insensitive jerk..

Sorry about the loss of your Mother. A MOM is one thing we only get one of, and when she's gone you never get over the loss.. I've had 58 years of trying, and it hasn't worked yet.

Just a thought.. I'd hate to label elcid96 as a total idiot if the comment he made was just a misunderstanding.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

It was my mother he was speaking of and she passed in 1995 from breast cancer. She was a PhD, served the school board in Telfair County for 47 years rising from teacher at age 18 to retiring as superintendent of schools and played piano for the church she was a member of for over 50 years in addition to raising my brother and I who are both college grads and pretty successful.

I have a very long memory and a very low threshold for bull****. I will remember the remarks that were posted earlier.

bb:

And IF the offensive comments were made regarding the loss of your Mother were made to seriously offend then elcid96 is in need of some serious therapy and did a wonderful job of offending...

Offending you and me and anyone else with any conscience and heart who might have read the post.

I was just throwing it out there that perhaps the intent was not to offend and he didn't realize you were serious about the loss of your Mom..

I don't know which intent was meant... I do know that saying such a thing deliberately, KNOWING you were serious about your loss is so far beyond the acceptable that it boggles the mind.

I would say that a person who would intentionally say such a thing is sadly lacking in personal character, and is a sad puppy..

Perhap's if the intent was misunderstood elcid96 might stop back by and and correct the misunderstanding? If he doesn't show up, we can assume he is happy with the way his post was received and is just a slimeball and go on.

Your Mom sounds like she was a quality lady with many virtues and talents and I sympathize for your loss.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

The entire SoCons recruiting will continue to bring in better talent as a whole. Unfourtanently from what i've read and heard GaSo has brought and is bringing in lots of very very talented players.

From all the teams talking about moving up and such, I believe in a few years the way georgia southerns recruitings going they would be the best candidates to move up. An SEC invite would be interesting.

Coach Hatcher is bringing some good recruits unfortunately those young recruits will be asked to contribute right away instead of redshirting or backing up and getting better for a year or two. GSU is still a year or two away from having a chance in being the same ball park as the ole GSU.

I am in favor of GSU moving up one day but an invite from the SEC is never going to happen in my lifetime.

Yeah, would be neat for a big conference to send an invite to App or GSU, by 2012 i think either team will be ready and have the depth required.

There aren't any FBS conferences I can think of who would invite either team though, maybe the Big East?

Now there's a surprise, seeing as how you indicate that you wouldn't go near Statesboro except perhaps on game day. Seeing as how Beautiful Eagle Creek is a couple of miles across campus from the stadium I'm sure you were there all by your lonesome. Didn't you feel like an idiot standing there with your sign with nobody else around?
