Bearkat GameDay: Stevie Smith and Jason Godfrey have been a big part of the SHSU offense this season
By Cody Stark/Assistant Sports Editor

Seniors Stevie Smith, left, and Jason Godfrey have provided a new dimension to the Bearkats offense this season. SmithÕs quickness and GodfreyÕs power gives SHSU a balanced running attack that will be needed today against Northwestern State when quarterback Phillip Daugherty starts his first game. Over the last few years, Sam Houston State has built a reputation as a team that likes to ware the arms off of quarterbacks. Pass, pass and pass again until the opposing secondary is exhausted has been SHSU's gameplan.

Lost in the shuffle has been a pair of talented running backs who have silently waited for their turn to lead them team.

Coach's Corner: It's been a while since Kats have seen action
By Cody Stark/Assistant Sports Editor

A question- and-answer session with Sam Houston State head coach Todd Whitten on this week's game against Northwestern State.

HI: Without taking the field in 21 days, how has the team handled the long layoff?

TW: Certainly we are going to be rusty in some areas, but my biggest concern is game speed. We have tried to practice to get ready for it, but I'm sure it is going to effect us. People do it all the time though, especially in bowl season, and sometimes they play very well. I don't think it is going to be that big of an issue because both teams have had the same layoff.
