ORANGEBURG, SC -- The South Carolina State Garnet and Blue Spring Football Game, which featured the Bulldog offense against the defense ended in a 36-all deadlock Saturday at O.C. Dawson Stadium.

Quarterback DeWain Clark of Statesville, North Carolina, who is battling Union native and former Palmetto State “Mr. Football” Malcolm Long for the starting job in the fall, completed 21 of 27 passes for 160 yards and two scores and ran for a third to lead the Bulldog offense.

Clark had scoring tosses of 13 yards to Semaj Moody and four yards to Phillip Morris and ran four yards for another in the contest.

Long, who was the backup to Cleve McCoy last season, connected on 10 of 34 attempts for 103 yards and a two-yard scoring toss to tight end Octavius Darby.

Running back Anthony Campbell, an Auburn transfer, had 15 carries for 133 yards and a score to spearhead the SC State ground game, while Morris and Moody had five catches each in the contest.

The SC State defense, which received points for stopping the offense on downs, and creating turnovers, was paced by linebackers Antwann Gamble and Tony White. White had 10 total tackles, including seven unassisted and a sack, while Gamble had two interceptions to go along with six tackles.

Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough called the contest a “fun game,” but noted that his team had a lot of work to do to be competitive in the fall.

“It was an enjoyable game, a fun game for the fans,” Pough said. “The offense had a lot of chances to score and the defense made some big plays.

“It was a neat culmination to spring drills,” he continued, “but we have a lot of work to do on both sides of the football. It was nice to have the offense score some points, but we know we have a great deal of work left to do if we want to be a well-structured team and a competitive one this fall.

SC State had a number of players, including starters, sidelined. Pough’s team was especially thin on both the offensive and defensive lines.

The Bulldogs, 7-4 overall last season and 6-2 for a tie for second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, open the 2008 campaign at Central Florida Aug. 30.
