Rick Chamberlin doesn't really realize Mike Kelly isn't at spring football practice.

"We are so busy we don't notice that," the new University of Dayton coach said. "He would wholeheartedly agree with that."

But it does strike Chamberlin once per practice that it's a new era.

"Standing before the players and talking to them at the end of practice — being in that position is a little different," he said. "Seeing Mike standing in front of them for 20-some years, that's when I notice it."

The spring Red/Blue game has been changed to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 20, due to scheduling conflicts. The move enables UD to have its cookout, contests and other extracurricular activities start at about noon.

Other football developments:

• Five fifth-year seniors — quarterback Rob Florian, running backs Ben Shappie and James Wade, defensive end Scott Vossler and nickel back Steve McDonald — are back from last year's 11-1 Pioneer Football League champs.

"You're talking about the core there," Chamberlin said. "They all bring something we need. Rob's been Kevin (Hoyng's) backup, but any time we called on him, he was ready."

Florian, who threw for 411 yards (three short of UD's school record) in his first start in Jacksonville in 2006, gets his chance to run the spread offense.

• In part due to Justin Watkins' inability to practice this spring after an ACL injury late last year, the Flyers have moved defensive back James Ward and running back Justin Millio to receiver.

Those two, Nick Collins and others will compete with Watkins and J Michael Jonard to fill the receiver spots this fall.

• The "unofficial, unreleased" 2008 football schedule looks like this: Aug. 31 vs. CSU (at Welcome Stadium); Sept. 13 vs. Fordham; Sept. 20 vs. Robert Morris; Sept. 27 at Duquesne; Oct. 4 vs. Campbell; Oct. 11 vs. Drake; Oct. 18 t Davidson; Oct. 25 vs. Valparaiso; Nov. 1 at San Diego; Nov. 8 at Butler; Nov. 15 vs. Morehead State; Nov. 22 at Jacksonville.

The Flyers play five of their first six at Welcome and three of their last four on the road.

Pretty good schedule. 12 games, 11 FCS games, and one game against a Division II team, Central State. ( A team that is also on Youngstown State's schedule this year by the way ). OOC includes two NEC games and one PL team! I can live with this schedule. Even though CSU is a Division II team, they have a very loyal fan base, and will be one of the best attended games at Welcome Stadium this year!

So much for the Albany game huh?

A step in the right direction, but you guys should just add an OVC team. Beat up on them and have even more reason to cry fowl at the end of the season.

Yeah, playing 11 FCS games out of 12 is a sure way to miss the playoffs.... I sure would like to see Dayton go 12-0 with this schedule and then listen to the old guard excuses for keeping them out....

I doubt that we will go 12-0, but I sure would like to see it happen just to see you squirm!

You counting Fordham in that too? No way. They have a great club coming back - Tom Masella has really rebuilt that program.

BTW, The Citadel - Princeton looks like an intriguing matchup in '08.

Along with being 12-0, if these things happen they may get a shot:

1) Fordham can win the PL again
2) Robert Morris and Duquesne do very well
3) At least two PFL teams do very well

12-0 is tough to do though, no matter what level; Any Given Saturdayxthumbsupx

Campbell is not a I-AA yet. So that leaves you 10-0. 2007 final rankings...

35. Fordham

87. Drake
91. Davidson
104. Duquesne

115. Valparaiso
119. Butler

Why would I squirm?

That's a lot of IF's and that would be the slim part of "Not much chance". 12-0 is something to be proud of, but not something that necessarily gets you a spot. We've seen teams with overinflated records get smoked in the playoffs.

1996 Jackson State goes 10-1, loses first round 45-6
2004 Jacksonville State goes 9-1, loses first round 49-7
2007 Delaware State goes 10-0 vs I-AA, loses first round 44-7

What these three have in common is that they play in three of the lower ranked conferences in I-AA. It's not coincidence that their conferences are ranked lower.

Those scores don't mean much. Here's other first round scores from those years.

1996:
Montana 48, Nicholls St. 3
Murray St. 34, Western Ill. 6 (Murray, Ky. 2,753)
Marshall 59, Delaware 14 (Huntington, W.Va. 15,429)

Second round 1996:
Montana 44, East Tenn. St. 14
Troy 31, Murray St. 3
Marshall 54, Furman 0

Third round 1996:
Montana 70, Troy 7
Marshall 31, UNI 14

1996 Championship:
Marshall 49, Montana 29

Looks like a lot of blow out games in 1996xnodx

2004 first round:
Sam Houston St. 54, Western Ky. 24 (Huntsville, Tex. 3,767)
Montana 56, Northwestern St. 7 (Missoula, Mont. 15,507)
Furman 49, Jacksonville St. 7 (Greenville, S.C. 4,892)

Not as many blow-outs in 2004, but JSU wasn't the only one getting creamed in the first round.

2007 first round:
Eastern Washington 44, (2) McNeese State (11-1) 15

This game kind of stood out in 2007

So just from the years you pointed out the following conference had a team that was blown out in the first round:

Southland (3 times)
OVC (1 time)
MEAC (1 time)
SWAC (1 time)
Gateway (2 times)
CAA (1 time)

The mighty Gateway and CAA have had teams blown out in the first round?!?!xeekx

Campbell is an FCS team and a full member of the PFL in 2008! Please at least try to get your information correct....
