View Full Version : Montana State upgrading to turf

CopperCat

There hasn't been an actual press release on this yet, but it has been said over on bobcatnation that MSU will be getting turf this summer, and will be ready for the start of the 08' season. After seeing how nasty that field can get when it's wet, this is welcome news for Bobcat fans. Methinks Coach Ash had something to do with getting this done, but one could not say for sure at this point. At any rate, MSU has made a necessary and much needed upgrade.xnodx xthumbsupx

That is a sweet upgrade as the fields here in Montana take a real beating in October and November. Nice job on this one for the Cats.

Just kidding xlolx

But really, it's nice to see an upgrade to the facilities. I know we're scheduled to replace ours in the next few years. I assume it'll be something like Sprinturf or Fieldturf?

Ash had field turf at Drake and saw the advantages of a consistant field. I'm sure he pushed for this...

Montana State is a situation which truly warrants turf instead of grass. With inclimate weather often occupying the second half of the season, this should prevent any future "mud bowls" in Bozeman.

Or when the ground freezes they might as well play in the parking lot. It would be softer,

Montana State's Bobcat Stadium will look different next fall...

Montana State University's 1984 National Championship football team holds a unique place in the school's past. On Friday, that team's head coach Dave Arnold and many of his former players took a leading role in boosting Bobcat Football's future fortunes.

Montana State received approval for a plan to install artificial turf in Bobcat Stadium from the Montana University System Board of Regents Friday, MSU Athletic Director Peter Fields announced, allowing the planning process for the project to begin immediately. The project's funding comes from players and coaches on that 1984 team, an effort endorsed and spearheaded by Arnold.

While installation of the turf won't begin until conclusion of the team's spring football drills at the end of April, Fields said the planning stage begins with the procurement of an engineering firm and a contractor for earth-moving. "Once we have those elements in place," Fields said, "the process to install the turf is 75 days. Our plan is for the turf to be ready to use on August 1."

This is one of the best ideas I have ever heard...I will have to second this opinion. Our stadium up here just got rediculous at times and I am so so glad that they are finally doing this installment. It was nice to have a natural field, but to keep it in good shape seemed like a lot of work and the mud bowls didnt help that matter haha.

With the new tailgating rules stating that the tailgate areas will be closed after halftime until the end of the game, the stadium will actually be full instead of suspiciously not looking like a sellout.

Apparently the guy that started it died of a heart attack last summer and they essentially went back to square one with new people in charge. They're in the process of revamping their format right now to get rid of the glitches they had an make it more browser compatible. It's even rumored that there may be some free programs for awhile ) probably trying to get back in good graces with Big Sky fans, they definitely had their share of problems in the past.

It was discussed, but I don't know that the goal lines will be gold. What I showed is the lettering that'll go in the north end zone. One end says 'Montana State' and the other says 'Bobcats'. In addition there is a large gold Cat head mid-field, two 'Cats' logos to honor the '84 NC team who was behind this upgrade in opposite corners near the sideline, and the Big Sky Conference logo in corners opposite them.

Just different brands, the turf is probably similar,. I think SprinTurf glues their seams, FieldTurf sews theirs. Sprinturf uses all rubber infill (about three lbs./sq. ft.), FieldTurf uses a combination of silica sand and rubber (seven lbs. sand/sq. ft. + three lbs. rubber/sq. ft.).

All but three NFL teams either have FieldTurf or natural grass.

I've played on the Griz SprintTurf for a few high school games. And the rubber pellets or whatever you call them are the worst!!! they get stuck in mouthgaurds and are dangerous to the eyes. But it was raining the two time I played there, which might have made the conditions worse.

A few pics from this morning, they're getting things glued down- yard markers, hash marks, numbers, lettering, etc. They should be ready to start laying down the infill in a couple days.

How long did it take them putting it down. I guess they are unloading the new turf at WGS.

They started last Tues.- they figure 15-18 days from start to finish for FieldTurf.

I agree, but our location makes it impossible not to have ridiculous field conditions one or two games a year.

I will miss the natural grass, but this sure looks nice.

Also, the old field had a 30" crown on it, this will only have a 6" on it.

Players prefer the rug. No frozen fields in Nov. and Dec. A frozen football field is like playing on an asphalt parking lot.

Back in the day when we had grass we had huge playoff wins, lots to do with bad fields and some bad ass Griz teams too.

Precisely my point.

But at any rate, it the new turf looks fantastic. I'm sure the team will appreciate it come November when the ground would have been frozen with that stuff we called "grass."

A few pics from this afternoon, they'll finish the logos, striping, etc. tomorrow and start the sand/rubber infill on Thurs. Two more semis of sand or rubber showed up today, I don't know how many semis that makes- the silica sand comes from a mine in Wisconsin, not sure where the rubber pellets are coming from.

I love the "1984" in the "Cats" logo. It's a great reference to an important moment in the athletic history of our state and a classy tribute to the guys who made the new turf possible.

How exactly do they put all that fill in? Is the turf still not secured to the ground so that it can be peeled up or something?

How exactly do they put all that fill in? Is the turf still not secured to the ground so that it can be peeled up or something?

The "turf" at this point in time is one piece of material, each piece sewed to the next one from end to end and side to side- nothing can be peeled up. The backing was spiked into the gravel as they stretched and measured all the way from the north end zone to the south in five yard panels and ultimately was spiked and stapled to a nail board on the inside of the new curbing all the way around the field- it isn't going anywhere.

The "turf" on the backing is about 2 1/2" long and by the time they're done with the infill it'll show about 5/8". They have a special machine that spreads the sand/rubber infill- they begin with a layer of sand, then up to 21 layers of sand/rubber mix w/ a final topping of a special rubber mix. Since last Wed. or Thurs. they have delivered about 250 tons of silica sand and special rubber pellets to the site. They put down 7 lbs. of sand and 3 lbs. of rubber/ sq. ft. (I know, I've said all this before, just a recap).

I'll try to get some pics of the spreading of the infill when they start that process on Thurs.

They're finishing up the gluing on the south end of the stadium, but started spreading the infill a little over an hour ago on the north end- the first layer is sand, followed by rubber, etc. They have 143 tons of silica sand and 107 tons of rubber pellets.

A few pics from this afternoon. Obviously this layer is rubber pellets. Weather permitting (we've been getting some t-storms the last couple days which are slowing them down) they hope to have the infill done by Sun. Then the crew that does the rubber matting that covers the asphalt and concrete on the perimeter moves- they take about 10 days.

The sweeper goes in reverse to brush against the grain picking up the turf as the infill settles.
