Citadel got the players they needed.

When spring football practice starts next week, The Citadel will have one healthy scholarship running back ready for duty.

That's why running back was a point of emphasis in Bulldogs coach Kevin Higgins' third recruiting class, announced on national signing day Wednesday.

Three running backs highlight the class of 25 players, and a fourth back — John Shaw, a transfer from Northern Iowa — will be eligible for the 2009 season.

With rising sophomore Cody Wilson the lone scholarship veteran at running back, those three freshman backs will report to campus next fall with a chance to compete for early playing time in the 2008 season.

"Some of these freshmen will be playing, simply because we have only one scholarship guy that's healthy," Higgins said. "And I think we signed three very good running backs this year."

Those backs include Ryan Williams of Ocala, Fla., a 5-11, 245-pounder whom Florida tried to convince to walk-on with the Gators; Asheton Jordan, a versatile 6-0, 206-pounder from Stratford High School; and Terrell Dallas, a 6-0, 203-pounder from Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Those three will compete with Wilson, who rushed for 240 yards and a touchdown last season as Tory Cooper's primary backup, and Ricky Anderson, who redshirted last season with a knee injury.

"Those three backs really fill a big void for us, because some of those guys will be playing," Higgins said.

Williams averaged 7.6 yards per carry last year at North Marion High School.

According to Higgins, Florida talked to Williams about signing as a walk-on and accepting a scholarship in January. Ex-Florida Gator Tim Higgins, the coach's son who played last year for the Bulldogs after transferring, helped keep Williams in The Citadel fold.

"At the end of this, one of Florida's coaches ended up talking down about The Citadel, and saying the ring doesn't mean anything, what kind of education can you get at The Citadel," coach Higgins said. "So we asked Tim, who has a national championship ring from Florida and an experience with The Citadel, which experience was better? And he said no question, The Citadel experience was better, and that made a big difference."

Stratford's Jordan ran for 1,100 yards and caught 24 passes as a senior, and impressed Citadel coaches at the North-South All-Star Game.

"We were looking at Asheton as a linebacker, but our coach came back and said, 'This guy is a skilled running back,'" Higgins said. "And we like him catching the ball out of the backfield in our offense, using the tailback as a receiver. He can do all those things."

Dallas was a Division I-A prospect before tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in his knee as a junior and spraining both ankles as a senior. He had 1,542 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career.

"We were fortunate that all the big schools got off of him," Higgins said.

Higgins also praised the four defensive linemen in the class — Chris Billinglsea (6-5, 230), Jake Moorer (6-3, 225), Demarrio Sims (6-2, 240) and Pre'Andre Watson (6-3, 265), who was recruited as a walk-on by Michigan State. Quarterback Miguel Starks (6-3, 205) ignored late overtures from Appalachian State to stick with The Citadel.

Running back Shaw, 5-7 and 195 pounds, redshirted last year at Northern Iowa, where he was scout team player of the year. He'll have three years of eligibility at The Citadel, starting in 2009.

Hey Ronbo, two things. First, you must either work in the athletic department or have a family member who does. I have really good friends who are either in charge or second in charge of the athletics department and it seems that you get inside information faster than I do. So, let me in. xsmiley_wix
Secondly, in my discussions with some of my friends it sounds like Moore might be "too big" for the RB position but will more than likely be a FB. What's your take?

Bobby likes a big fast RB. Moore is a 4.6 guy that seems to have a faster 2nd gear when he gets loose. In the clip he is pulling away from DB's from 5A Arizona schools, some of them probably have 4.5 and 4.4 timed forties. I'm thinking the Griz use him at RB because our H-Back/Fullback never carries the ball.
