We're all having withdrawals here and it's only going to get worse for the next few months. So xwhistlex let this be an official recruiting thread for the upcoming year for your respective team so we can all talk about something football related. Here we go:

2) Justin Lloyd DB 5'11" 185lbs 2 Stars - 4.54 40 time

Kats picked up a commit from Arizona...incredible! We never recruit out of Texas and in the last few years, we're going into Oklahoma and Kansas, now we're heading to Arizona...??

This is a JUCO pickup..

I went a looked at him on Rivals.com. I was amazed to see that he had a 1490 on the SAT!!!!! xbowx (same as me xthumbsupx )

And then I remembered they had since changed the formula to include the written portion of the exam...xlolx ...so I was no longer elated, but as a 1490 now still roughly converts to a 1000 under the new formula, its certainly not a bad score. xthumbsupx

Here is a prospect whose odds of playing for an FCS team are quite good. Who will it be? Only time will tell.

http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=3129024

CAA, NEC, PL, Big Sky, and PFL teams are still in the running.

Yes, he's my son. :D

I have a sneaky suspicion that I'll be a regular here on the AGS board for the next few years! xthumbsupx

I keep the Furman recruiting thread up. If you're registered on the uffp you can check it out in the football forum.

Right now, FU has 5 known commits:

RB - Tersoo Uhaa 5'8", 194 lbs, 4.59 sec
TE - Phillip Silverstein 6'5.5", 230 lbs, 4.66 sec
OL - Parker Karaus 6'1", 265 lbs, 5.1 sec
LB - Chris Wiley
S - Mitch McGrath 6'3', 185 lbs

QB recruiting is still up in the air. It obvious from the people I've talked to that FU is trying to find a QB that can run the spread option (like ASU and West Virginia). Apparently the coaching staff had about 4 guys they really liked and recently put out an offer to a guy from Florida named Archie Barnes.

Considering it's a dead period until mid-january, there isn't likely to be a ton of info coming out right now. Stuff should start coming out fast and furious around mid january.

Met a DE out of Fayetteville that said he was coming to App during the Richmond game. Didn't get his name though. Looked to be 6'5 or 6'6 and around 250-270.

So far at Montana State:

Brian Bignell, HS, 6-2, 225, DL Helena Capital, (AA Co-MVP)
Jared Rohrback, HS, 6-1, 215, LB Great Falls CMR, (AA Co-MVP)
Todd Brandt, HS, 6-5, 215, OL Bozeman, (First team All State)
Matt Harris, JR, 6-2, 225, LB Orange Coast Community College, (JC)
Mark Iddins, JR, 6-3, 205, QB Mukilteo, WA (JC - Scout 3 star)
Anthony Patterson, JR, 6-4, 300, OL Sierra Junior College (CA)

Looking forward to seeing the rest. Have heard rumors of a WR out of Helena Captial. Kid by the name of Casey Lamping. Good size and pretty fast. He was a first team all state WR at Captial. Have also heard that we are recruiting Capitals QB as an Athlete. Can't remember his name though. Capital is the same school that produced Bobby Daly and a few griz greats as well.

There are a variety of sites covering recruiting. Subscribe to one of the Rivals sites (VaPreps, NJVarsity, etc.), ESPN iNsider, Scout.com, and so on. Subscribing to a Rivals site gives you access to all their sites. Some, such as VaPreps, do a great job of covering recruiting within their state. VaPreps VIP Message Board has articles every day updating specific prospects recruiting, as well as rankings of Virginia prospects with commitments and who is leaning where. Here's the link, although you'll need to subscribe to open the threads.

Preston Evans, 6'0" 215 LB from Sioux Falls, SD

He'll probably get redshirted and but once he puts on another 10-15 pounds of muscle he'll be a beast. Looks like they'll have someone to fill Joe Mays shoes in the coming years.

Trial and error, though the schools seem to be contiguous (or relatively so) once the conference has been located.

....Why doesn't Scout.com make this information readily available to everyone?? They hate us. That FCS exists at all is the dirty little secret of Div. 1 football.

Thanks for the find… Its always interesting to see what players show up, most for Furman are not on their board.

I don't think we have a snowball's chance in hell, but the list shows Furman is recruiting and offered Johnny Sanders of Hazelhurst, MS. He's a four-star strong safety. Offers; Miss St, Southern Miss, Furman. Interest; FLA, WVU, OkSt.

Anyone from Mississippi know anything about Sanders, it's odd because Furman does not heavily recruit Mississippi.

Also looks like Furman is battling Samford and Miss St for Matthew Gordon S from Briarwood Christian, former teammate of Furman tightend and future All-American Larry Hedden. Gordon would be a nice fit with commit Mitch McGrath.

Also Recruit Mike Cummings is coming to Missoula for a visit on Jan 19. Its his only scheduled visit and he would be a really good catch for the Griz. He is 6'1" and runs a 4.59 (scout timed). He also had 8 Ints as DB this last season.

There will be plenty more recruits come February, the GRIZ have over 25 scholarships to fill this year. I will not be a bit surprised to have 3 or more put aside for possible drop downs over the summer.

Furman has got a bloody monopoly on tightends in the Southern Conference. Adding another will give us four tightends, all around 6-4/5 and running in the 4.6 range.

Let's see Cornett had 10 receptions for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns, one reception gained 60 of his net yards. I'm sure Cornett is a good player, Bettis and Wilcox were great players for ASU but both have graduated.

Furman Tightends
Larry Hedden First Team SoCon Media, Coaches
6-6, 250 Junior
36 receptions 421 yards 3 touchdowns

Cris Truss Pre-Season SoCon

Seth Skogan RedShirt

Phillip Silverstein Commit

On paper Furman is loaded at tightend for the next several years. I think that's why PaladinFan is so excited about this group and that Sorrells has shown the ability to use his tightends very well.

The Citadel doesn't use our TE's as a huge offensive threat to throw the ball and get yards. I have more noticed the TE's being used to add a bruising reciever if needed, but even more utilized as a potential recieve that provides blocking. I think we've only had one maybe two TE's at best recently with a larger wide/slot receiver corps.

Taylor Cornett is good and has played well for us picking up some key 3rd down conversions. ... Then again my memory may serve me wrong.

Good point Biff… Tightend is a unique position, and in many offenses it does not play as important a role as in others. Furman has a history of using their tightends in the passing game and the running game. Next season because of talent, size and depth of the tightend corp, that group will become a strength. I think Hedden will become the possession target for Sorrells. Because of this you could see Hedden with some pretty big numbers 600 plus receiving yards. With three tightends that have receiving, blocking and running skills. You could see Hedden, Truss, and Skogan in formation package.

I like the way Furman utilizes the position. I consider TE's the "fullbacks" of the receiver corps. When you hand the ball to a good FB, he doesn't always blow things up for big yards (10+) like the speedy HB's, but he will put a hit on some players and get the extra 3 - 5 yards needed for the first down. TE's can do the same thing with the yards gain after the first and second hit of the defender.

Three TE's in a formation. I hope we pick up a few big linebackers to put them on there butts this coming season.

Ryan Steed Commits To Furman

By Shedrick L. Moorer
SCPrepNation.com LowCountry Editor
Posted Jan 7, 2008

Pinewood Prep’s Ryan Steed will be heading to Greenville, SC next fall to suit up for Coach Bobby Lamb and the Furman Paladins. The Pinewood Prep standout informed SCPrepNation.com of his decision.

“I just committed to Furman about 20 minutes ago,” Steed said with the sound of excitement in his voice. “Actually, I’m still up here on my official visit. We are on a tour right now, and I will be going to a basketball game later on.”
Ryan Steed was more commonly known for making his mark on the hardwood, until this past fall when he stepped onto the football field. Steed performed well enough to land three scholarship offers from Charleston Southern, The Citadel, and Furman University.

With three scholarship offers on the table and possibly a few more to follow, what made Steed decide to go with the Paladins? “The school is not too big,” Steed said. “It has a close knit setting to it. It seems very family oriented. Basically I liked what I saw up here and just decided to make my decision.”

Steed who primarily lined up at quarterback will probably be making the switch to defensive back once he arrives at Furman. The 6-0, 175 pound ATH wrapped up his senior season with nearly 1300 yards of total offense, and 20 touchdowns for the Panthers. He also picked off 4 passes on the defensive side of the ball.

Although Steed has made a commitment to play for the Paladin’s football program, will he make an occasional appearance on the basketball court? I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens…

Note: Steed is currently averaging a little over 19 points a game for the two-time Defending SCISA Men’s Basketball Champions, Pinewood Prep.

An interesting view of Eric Breitenstein from an opposing coach.

BOONE - All Glen Cook could do was chuckle.
After watching Watauga tailback Eric Breitenstein’s dazzling performance Friday night, it seemed an appropriate response.
“No. 2 is an awesome player,” Central Cabarrus High’s veteran head coach said, shaking his head. “We thought we could stop him. Gee ... hello.”
Enough said.
Despite putting in a game plan specifically designed to stop the Shrine Bowl selection, the Vikings didn’t come close to slowing Breitenstein, who sliced and diced his way for 316 yards rushing and six touchdowns - both career highs - to lead the top-seeded Pioneers to a convincing 52-36 victory in the second round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs at Jack Groce Stadium. “I tell you what, he’s probably one of the best running backs I’ve seen in a long, long time,” Cook said. “He’s not fancy or nothing like that. It looks like he just sits there and slides and picks a hole and then all of a sudden he throws on the jets and he’s down the sideline. And nobody’s catching him.”

Which is interesting Furman will have six tailbacks on the roster next season.

Appalachian State, the reigning 1-AA National Champions, dipped into South Carolina and pulled away a major commit Monday night. Jordan Gary, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound jumbo athlete out of Greenwood, verbally pledged to the Mountaineers, as first reported by Rivals.com.

Jordan Gary is a huge pickup for Appalachian State.
"I just talked to (head) coach (Jerry) Moore about 10 minutes ago and told him," Gary told Rivals.com. "I sensed that he kind of expected it but he was sure happy. I chose them because of their winning tradition and just felt it was the right place for me."

The two star defensive end/tight end impressed many during December's Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. The edge rusher talked with a former prep teammate, current star quarterback Armanti Edwards, just last week.

"He was in town and I told him I was considering App. State," the class of 2008 standout shared. "He seemed excited."

Gary will officially visit his future college on January 18.

"I want to see the campus, meet some of the players and just how it really is up there," he entailed.

The senior chose the Mountaineers over offers from Marshall, Coastal Carolina, South Carolina State and Georgia Southern.

"I went to camp at Marshall and Coastal wanted me to come for a visit, but I just decided to commit to App. State," the defender indicated. "They are getting a good player that will come in and work hard and someone that wants to win."

The touted prospect helped lead Greenwood to a state championship in his junior year.

This past season he recorded eight sacks and also caught 10 passes for 200 yards.

As a junior, Gary, regarded as the top sleeper in the state of South Carolina in 2008 by Tigerillustrated.com, totaled approximately 60 tackles and nine sacks on defense and added 10 catches and a score on the offensive side of the ball.

He benches 330 pounds, squats 465 pounds and has been timed running the 40-yard dash in 4.69 seconds.

Montana just landed the 2007 Montana Offensive MVP in QB Jared Hunt. He is projected to play Safety and Punter. He is the favorite in the State 110 meter hurdles and runs a 4.5. Think Hauck might try a fake punt now and then?

http://www.helenair.com/articles/2008/01/08/sports/local/b02010808_01.txt

"Capital High quarterback Jared Hunt has made a verbal commitment to the University of Montana to play defensive back and punter, according to Capital High head coach Pat Murphy.

Hunt, who was named the AA Offensive MVP this season, led the Bruins to back-to-back state championships. He completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,857 yards, 17 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He also ran for 366 yards and seven TDs.

“He’s an outstanding athlete,” Murphy said. “He’s got a chance to win state in the 110 hurdles and is a great hockey player. UM was looking for that and I can’t think of anyone better than Jared Hunt.”

Hunt, who’s 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, punted 15 times and averaged 40.8 yards per attempt."

Great pickup for APP. I've seen Greenwood play twice this season and Gary is a perfect fit for your program. Physical and plays with a lot of speed. Kids come out of Coach Dula's program prepared to play at the next level. Armanti, Renaldo, Spearman, Gary. I just wish we could get a few more of the local kids.

According to our recruiting gurus and the scouting websites, Lenard has committed to Furman. I don't know if visits are a formality or that everything is up in the air till signing day, but according to our people he will be a Paladin.

Maybe Lenard is going for two;).

Seriously though he sounds like a good pick up and while I don't want like when kid's commit and then go else where, he'd be a good fit at ASU.

Maybe once he sees the athletic enhancement at the stadium (weight room, indoor facility, 30K gameday crowds) he'll change his mind.

These recruits will get to see "Champions Day" (raising the SoCon North & NIT banners, and of course the Football Championship presentation) at the bball game against GSU and I think they'll be impressed.

correct me if i'm wrong but aren't there gentleman's agreements about recruits and verbal commitments?
Isn't the pitch or early decision given to a blue-Chipper that if they commit the school will not over recruit to their position.
It could be more of a basketball thing but having a young man give his word and then getting him to keep it is I guess it's a character thing! xwhistlex

It's great to be ASU and Coach Moore and tell 50 young men they have a shot at walking-on. For some 5 years later they end up with a degree and a couple of rings.

From AJC.com:

"ZACK WADDELL, LB The tough-nosed linebacker got his first Div. I offer this week from Louisiana-Monroe and more could follow. He also has generated interest from Air Force, Tennessee Tech, Georgia Southern, Furman and Murray State. Waddell finished as Roswell’s second-leading tackler with 114, along with 7 tackles for loss and 4 sacks."

A source tells me that Western Carolina is now in the mix for this kid as well as the other SoCon and FCS schools.

That might all be true, but showing a kid from Fairburn, GA around Boone in Janurary might send him running before he gets there. :)

I watched his high light video and the kid is a stud. He will enter in some stiff competition, Furman is starting to stock pile running backs. Glad we (so far) landed him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CYbAIQAbnU

A player that would be another huge get for App State is defensive end John Rizor, who hails from the familiar Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville, N.C. - the same place that produced all-everything and current New York Jet Marques Murrell.

Rizor, who at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds is reminiscent of Jason Hunter in both size and speed, will officially visit ASU on Jan. 18 and according to the talented prospect, a decision could be made shortly thereafter.

"Appalachian State has already offered me and I'm going to be taking my official visit there next week," Rizor said. "If I like it then I'm probably going to go ahead and commit.

"I went on an unofficial visit when they played Richmond and it was great. It was cool and the crowd was just really crazy. They were really into it. They rushed the field and everything.

"That was the game that Armanti went crazy in the game breaking all those records. I was like, 'man, this is a good place to be.'"

"The coaching staff is great," he said. "They are all real cool. They weren't uptight like all the other colleges. All the App coaches are down to earth and it's really like a family. It's not all just about football. After you graduate, you still have a place there. It's just more like a family."

In addition to the family atmosphere, Rizor touched on other aspects that caught his attention.

"The crowd there is great. I love how they get into it and support the team. It's just a fun atmosphere. I also like mountain areas and being at a place that you get to have all four seasons. I just like everything about it."

Though Rizor appears to be ready to offer his pledge to the Mountaineers, he will take one other visit this weekend to make sure.

"I'm going to Wofford this weekend for my official visit and I'm just going to see what they've got to offer," he explained. "But right now, Appalachian State is my leader."

When the Mountaineers started recruiting Rizor, the possibility of moving him from defensive end to linebacker was mentioned as a possibility. The coaches told him that either way, they would like him to gain some weight and get to about the 245-250 pound range.

"I'll need to put on some weight, but right now the coaches aren't really sure where I would play because of my speed. I'm quicker off the edge than most defensive ends and my speed has the coaches thinking I could play linebacker, too.

"I'm okay with either position. I like to rush the quarterback and I also like to cover receivers and move around like a linebacker does. But I'll be happy playing wherever they need me the most."

Speed is definitely the key for Rizor, as he has been clocked at 4.44 and 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He is also a track star, as he has qualified for the states in the 4x2 relay as well as the regionals in the 300-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash.

In addition to Wofford and ASU, Rizor has received offers from Old Dominion, The Citadel, Richmond and William & Mary. Elon and James Madison are also close to offering. Additionally, he has received interest from N.C. State, Wake Forest, Duke and Ohio State.

As a senior he recorded 63 tackles, 25 tackles-for-loss, nine sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, including two that he returned for touchdowns.

Verbals are nothing but a handshake basically. Lenard appears to have fallen under the radar. Furman has been recruiting him it appears for a while and then he makes AJC A first team. And it makes sense that other schools will call. It will suck to lose him to a conference rival, but Bobby is one of the best come signing day and Furman academically has alot to offer as a package.

The battle I'm interested in concerns Archie Barnes. Furman wants him as a QB, Vandy wants him as an athlete. I guess we will know this weekend after his visit to Nashville. It would be nice to have a 6-4 quarterback that appears to have tremendous upside.

UCA lands a 4 star transfer from Miss. State.

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears have added linebacker Anthony Summers, a transfer from Mississippi State University, to the football program.
Summers, who redshirted last season for the Bulldogs after playing in 11 games as a true freshman, is a 6-foot-2, 205-pounder from Olive Branch, Miss. He is a cousin and a former high school teammate of UCA starting cornerback Anthony Gambles. “We are very excited to have this caliber of athlete joining our program,’ said UCA head coach Clint Conque. “He is certainly one of the more high profile guys we’ve had entering our program.
Summers, a quarterback and receiver in high school, was rated the No. 8 athlete in the country following his high school career by Prep Star Magazine and was recruited by most of the Southeastern Conference schools. Summers was rated in the top 250 players in the nation by Rivals.com and was rated No. 101 by by Prep Football Report.
Conque said he projects to be an outside linebacker for the Bears.
“Anthony seems to be a very grounded young man who just wants an opportunity for more playing time,’ said Conque. “He’s definitely a high profile guy but he also understands he has to make his own way.’

Buford's Miller selects Wofford football

Buford senior J.J. Miller has accepted a football scholarship from Wofford, which made the Football Championship Series (Division I-AA) playoffs last season. He is the son of Mickey and Judy Miller.

Miller, a 6-2, 275-pounder, was a two-year starter at offensive tackle for the Wolves and helped them to the Class AA state title as a senior. He also was named first-team All-County and played in the Rivalries of Gwinnett All-Star Game

North Gwinnett’s Eberhardt announces commitment

North Gwinnett senior defensive end Eric Eberhardt committed to Wofford last week.

The all-county player led the Bulldogs with 13 sacks and helped North Gwinnett (13-2) reach the Class AAAAA championship game.

“They’re getting a kid with a great motor, with great passion for the game, who’s a great leader,” coach Bob Sphire said.

“He’s a really outstanding athlete for a down lineman, and if needed could even move to linebacker. But they recruited him as a defensive lineman.”

Our DL and OL line size seems to gradually be creeping upward.

That's a lot of mass for that speed. Some of you physics majors should tell us the impact of the guy at full tilt.

Physics Teacher here:

Mass = 113.6 kg
Top Speed (Using 40 yard dash information) = 7.8 m/s
Momentum = 886 kg*m/s
Impact Force (Using 0.5 second impact time) = 1772 N (That's roughly the same as the weight of 2.5 average men)

Actually, the stable is pretty empty right now.
Lewis has graduated, Mike Hamilton isn't returning for his senior season (probably), the #3, true freshman phenom Zeke Rozier, blew out his knee in the 2nd or 3rd game last season, and the #4 guy Chris Teal is moving back to his original position which is wide receiver.

Green could very possibly be the #1 guy coming out of Spring practice and the kid will still be in high school then. Our RB situation was probably a big factor in him committing to GSU...that and being a Savannah kid.

Furman recruit: Tersoo Uhaa

Prep football: Senior Riverside cadets are tops in classroom, on field

Tersoo Uhaa and Bill Dearybury don’t have enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to be done. This pair of high school seniors have ambitious, yet grueling schedules from dawn to dusk.

Uhaa and Dearybury, cadets at Riverside Military Academy, have earned the highest respect of the administration through a résumé of exemplary personal conduct and achievements each has assembled since entering as seventh graders at the private military school in Gainesville.

Uhaa is the highest-ranking cadet at Riverside Military with the distinction of Lieutenant Colonel. Dearybury is near the top of the Riverside’s military ranking hierarchy with the distinction of Captain as Company Commander and oversees the lives of 47 cadets in the freshman and sophomore class that comprise Charlie Company.

NoCo has recieved a verbal commitment from dl Marcus Lucas from Rangeview high school (Denver area). Interesting story about Lucas.

He suffered a fractured vertebrae from a cheap-shot hit during a game against Highlands Ranch. It made the news in Colorado because it really was one of the worse cheap-shot hits you'll ever see. He was hit way after the wistle was blown and blind sided. Not only that, but the ref didn't even call a penalty. Last news that was reported is that Lucas is planning a law suit against CHSAA and maybe the players family.

Anyways...here's a link about his recovery. Lucas will redshirt that will help him recover

Malcolm Bennett 6'2"/270 DT, Milledgeville Military Academy
Justin Lloyd 5'11"/185 DB Victory Christian (Charlotte)
Jordan Gary 6'3"/240 DE Greenwood (S.C.)

Lost out on 6'3" WR Brentin Bersin who committed to Wofford during his visit

In the running for John Rizor a Defensive End from Fayetteville, visited Wofford but stated during his visit his school of choice at this time was ASU over any other school.

There's a lot of factors that go into those decisions. Wofford offers a lot App doesn't and vice versa.

To be quite honest, Mike Ayers is "pound for pound" the best coach in the SoCon given what he has to work with.

Wofford/Ayers - 44-33
ASU/Moore - 60-17

As head coach:

FCS Division Championships (since 1997):

Good luck with the transfer...we got T. Washington (3-star DE out of HS) from LSU this past year and he finally started to come around towards the end of the season. It just surprises me how Turner wasn't being recruited harder by other FCS, and dare I say FBS schools, due to his size. I know we don't recruit size, we look for speed, so he must move fairly well for a big boy. Does anyone know what type of offense his highschool ran?

asufan87
January 16th, 2008, 02:12 PM
There's a lot of factors that go into those decisions.

Absolutely. One thing that has to be considered at the FCS level is the amount of financial aid being provided. Are we talking about a full ride or a half scholarship? Hard to draw apples to apples comparisons when all of the possible factors are considered.

straightshooter
January 16th, 2008, 02:14 PM
I think his team ran more of an I formation. They had the all time TD scorer for a season in GA at RB. With his size, you'd think that more FCS or even FBS schools might have been on him. Don't forget that commitments mean nothing until they sign on Feb. 6. Lots of things can change between now and then.

The transfer from LSU to GSU could work out great. The kid had moved up on the LSU depth chart. Not sure why he transferred, but he seemed to want to get back closer to home. GSU has to replace its OL, so if he can play, he's got a shot to start right away.

asu3peat
January 16th, 2008, 02:33 PM
Yeah I know things can change b/t now and signing day that's why I put the disclaimer that he had commited and not signed a LOI. From what I've read, he seems pretty sure about ASU. Although I'm sure a big time program could swoop in with an offer he couldn't refuse. If we land him, hopefully he won't have a hard time adjusting from the I-formation to running the zone blocking, spread -O- and help add some depth. I know we had the RS fresh. center Irvin who started against Michigan, but it would be nice to have him as a back-up.

Getting that shot to start right away was probably really appealing to him (LSU), not to mention being closer to home. With Foster's absence, you guys will definitely need a good o-line to protect that soph. QB who shredded us. I don't think he can make the defense look as silly as JF did w/ his legs.

Good news for GSU is that one of the backup OL, Cole Fountain, played a lot at center last season with the injuries GSU had on the OL. Fountain is 6'3", 300. Hatcher got a commitment from the center prospect he was really after last weekend. The kid is 6'2", 305, is from a top 4A program in GA and is said to be a man-child. Right now Georgia Tech is trying to get with him. Hopefully GSU can keep him committed.

Turner looks to be a solid prospect from a small, but good program. Good luck with him if he signs in February.

Two weeks ago, Twin City (Ga.) Emanuel County Institute offensive lineman Chad Turner couldn't have told you much about Appalachian State. In fact, the only thing he likely would have told you is that he knew they are winners of three consecutive national championships.
Apparently that was enough, as the 6-foot-4, 270 pound lineman recently offered his commitment to the Mountaineers.

"They won a championship three years in a row, that's all you need to know, right?" Turner told Mountaineer Illustrated late Wednesday night. "I live about 30 minutes from Georgia Southern, so I had seen them play there and I watched them play Michigan on T.V., and that's all I had seen of them until Coach (Shawn) Elliott came to see me on Sunday.

"He brought a DVD to show me and I was able to how the fans come out to the game and how much they love football."

While it's not a huge surprise that Turner has not seen ASU much on the football field, it is a bit more surprising that the senior offered his pledge to App State without ever stepping one foot on campus.

"I'm going to take my visit this weekend and it will be the first time I've been on the campus," he said. "Everybody I've talked to said I would like the campus, so that was good enough for me."

Turner, who was thought to be a center prospect on the collegiate level, said the ASU coaching staff expects him to come in and play offensive tackle. Though he hasn't ever played the position, Turner isn't too worried about the transition from guard to tackle.

"It's no big deal to me, you've gotta block no matter where you're at," he said. "Block the man in front of you, and that's what I'll do. I'm not worried about switching positions."

Though Turner wasn't bombarded with scholarship offers, he did hold one from a legendary ACC coach and university.

"Florida State offered me about a month ago, but they wanted me to greyshirt and the more I thought about it, the more I didn't want to do that," Turner explained. "I didn't want to lift weights and be away from the football field for a full year and then come in the next season. I wanted to go ahead and get going in college and not wait around to play football and be on a practice field."

In addition to App State and FSU's greyshirt offer, Turner held scholarships from Georgia Southern, Valdosta State, and Carson-Newman. He was also receiving heavy interest from Middle Tennessee State before he informed him of his commitment to Appalachian State.

I appreciate and understand what PaladinFan is refering to. Private schools like Furman, Richmond and Wofford (just to name a few) have a distinct disadvantage in enrollment and the cost of tuition. One full scholarship at these schools may equate to three at larger state supported institutions. All three of the schools I have mentioned have smaller enrollments than most schools they compete against. Woffords enrollment of 1300 (which equates to approx 650 male students) is far less than most of the SOCON ( App State and GSU both have around 16,000 students). I think PaladinFan's pound for pound assessment is quite the compliment.

ECI walked to a Class A state championship in Georgia this year without much of a challenge from anyone else. An offensive lineman is a good pick from there as their running back was tops in the state at that level.

I know some posters from private schools (Elon perhaps) who would disagree with that sentiment and believe it's a backhanded compliment. A scholarship to a private school is worth more in $$$ than one to most public schools. So is it really a disadvantage? Being a private school might be the one thing that helps the Woffords of the world stand out to some kids. It evens out so I don't buy the pound-for-pound argument.

I read that he commited (http://www.tboblogs.com/index.php/sports/comments/hillsboroughs-thomas-commits-to-georgia-southern/) to you guys over the weekend. Good pickup, hopefully he can contribute. He can carry the ball too, he had 11 TDs last season.

You like those? xlolx I'll bet our strength and conditioning coach gets him down to 330-335 by the time he plays. If you watch the video on him he dominates the line of scrimmage even at 360. He could be real tough at 330.

Lipski looks like a project. Will need at least a year in the weight room, and will certainly need to lose weight if he's going to play tackle. It won't take him long once he's in your camp to realize that without added strength and quickness, his size won't matter. We had a guy that size at W&M back in the 90s who never saw the field.

Agreed. A 6'8" OT at 280lbs will do better pass blocking that he will at 350. Redshirt him, set up camp at the track and wieght room and see what you have in the Spring.

Nice recruiting problem to have though. xthumbsupx

Well, what Gragg did won't help this kid. If you watch the video of the Rivals camp, he only was shown once, but was beaten badly to his left by a kid who was pancaked by another OL in that drill. He was able to play standing straight up in high school, and just push people with his hands. He looks athletic enough to learn to play with some technique, but he's got alot of work to do.

Independence High star Roderick Chisholm apparently met requirements and received an ASU offer while on his visit, as the 5-foot-10, 175 pounder verbally committed Coach Moore and the Mountaineers.

DeMorris Brooks, formerly of Shelby High School and most recently San Bernardino Valley C.C., also offered his pledge as expected. The 5-foot-10, 190 pounder will spend his time in an ASU uniform roaming the defensive secondary.

As was rumored late yesterday, Lincolnton (NC) High athlete Demery Brewer offered his pledge to the Mountaineers late yesterday. At 6-foot-2, 185 pounds Brewer played tight end for the Wolves, but will likely lineup at receiver for the Mountaineers.

Athlete Leander Barney from Irmo (SC) High has also offered his pledge to the Mountaineers. Barney was being recruited as an athlete that could potentially see an opportunity at quarterback.

Highlights include being the Observers Offensive Player of the Year as a Junior at West Charlotte. Set the Mecklenburg county record for rushing touchdowns in a season with 42, and averaged 7.4 yards per carry at Independence this season.

Pretty impressive knowing that Independence was in a down year and is a QB focused school. He sounds like a back that can come in and provide some results immediately.

Jackson State Commitment's.

Commits for the Jackson State football team continue to file in with just two weekends left before the Feb. 6 signing day. The Tigers coaching staff will lose a weekend to host recruits when it coaches in the American Heritage Bowl on Saturday.

JSU has received commits from its second and third offensive linemen from the College of Sequoias. Tackle Demarcus Pace (6 feet 5, 290 pounds) confirmed that he'll be coming to Jackson and added that center Larry Landry (6-2, 275) will also. Guard Ben Walker (6-2, 330) was the first signee of this recruiting class.

"To be able to come back to the South, I really miss being back home," said Pace, a Little Rock, Ark., native. "When I step out on the field I'm a totally different guy. I'm a student/athlete. I'm going to school to major in criminal justice and minor in business management. On the field, you don't even want to see me on the field."

The Lackawanna College pipeline is still flowing as quarterback A.J. McKenna (6-5, 235) has signed and is on campus. McKenna joins Lackawanna verbals Mike Evans (LB, 6-0, 205) and Terrence Onyiuke (DL, 6-0, 282).

"I didn't want to go where I was needed," said Onyiuke, a Plainfield, N.J., native. "I wanted to go where I was wanted."

Running back commits

First-team all-state running back Meco Brown verbally committed to JSU during his visit Saturday. The 5-foot-6, 180-pounder from Moss Point ran for 1,331 yards and put up 2,042 all-purpose yards as a senior. He played in the Mississippi-Alabama game and scored 18 touchdowns during the season.

"The family atmosphere," Brown said. "When I came they treated me like family even though they just met me.

"I love it. They're trying to build something and I want to be part of that."

Brown chose JSU over Northern Illinois and Temple.

Jackson State also received a verbal from Northwest Rankin defensive lineman Michael Dukes.

"I've wanted to play for Jackson State for a long time," Dukes said. "I just like the community."

Desire to excel sets Noxubee star apart
Kareem Copeland • [email protected] • January 18, 2008

What’s this?
Imagine driving down a dark street in rural Macon in the early hours of the morning. What would be the least likely thing you'd expect to see?

How about a 6-foot, 193-pound teenager running around by himself in the yard of one of the homes?

"You hear the talk around the neighborhood, 'That boy is crazy,'" Andre Wright said. "People would see me running at 12-1 a.m., just going through my drills.

"Sometimes 2 or 3 a.m. You know how you just wake up in the middle of the night? (I'd decide) to throw on the cleats and go out here and run.

"We always have a little saying - work more than the next guy. Work while he's sleeping, while he's resting."

Wright, a free safety out of 2007 Class 4A state runner-up Noxubee County, plans to take that dedication to Jackson State in 2008 as a freshman on the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion.

Conversations with Wright and his high school coach, M.C. Miller, paint a picture that's inconsistent with your normal high schooler. Miller recalled Wright having scheduled the ACT exam for the same day the Tigers were playing Laurel for the state title. Wright had already qualified with a 19, but he wanted a 25.

"I said, 'You're going to cancel this one. You can take it later on,'" Miller said.

Wright points to his mother, Brenda, as the source of that desire. She demanded the same approach whether it was academics, football or even washing dishes.

"I'd say, 'I'm going to do it,'" Wright explained. "She'd say, 'I want you to do it now... then you won't have to worry about it later.'

"Just getting things done ahead of time so you can sit back and relax in the end."

Wright hasn't relaxed since the end of a senior season that produced 78 tackles and eight interceptions. The tornados that hit the Macon area last week forced Miller to cancel a weightlifting session at the school. And Wright was going to visit JSU the next day.

"They asked him what he wanted to do," Miller said. "He said he wanted to lift weights. He didn't want to miss two days."

Wright is enrolling in JSU over the summer so he can get a jump on team workouts.

"My goals are to get my degree so I'll have that foundation for being successful in this world," Wright said. "And as far as football, to come in and ball-out.

"Exceed all expectations."

The Appalachian State coaching staff loves playmakers with speed and on Saturday night they landed yet another player that fits the bill, as a 5-foot-9, 183 pound Leander Barney from Irmo (S.C.) High offered his pledge to the Mountaineers.

Leander Barney
"I just felt comfortable at App State," Barney told Mountaineer Illustrated. "The way it is one big family there caught my attention. That really stood out to me.

"I love how they play hardnosed football. The style they play is a perfect fit for me. And the fan support is great. We went to the basketball game and the fans don't just come out for football, they support the other sports, too.

"I've never been to a game at ASU, but I've seen it on film. Fans are all over the place. They stand on the sidelines, up in the grassy area, and just all over the place. It's crazy. The coaches told us the town shuts down for football games.

"I knew they would have a lot of fans, but I didn't expect it to be that way."

While Barney was certainly excited to offer his verbal commitment to ASU, the coaches seemed to be just as pleased when he informed them of his decision.

"I met with Coach (Jerry) Moore and that's when I told him I was committing to App State," he said. "It made him really happy. He was walking around with a smile on his face all day about all the commitments. He told me he was happy to have me as a part of the program.

"Coach (Shawn) Elliott was waiting outside of his office and he gave me a huge hug when I came out. He practically picked me up off the ground when he hugged me."

For Barney, the decision to choose Appalachian State was quite an easy process, as the future slot receiver at ASU has hoped to be a part of the program since the Mountaineers defeated the Michigan Wolverines.

"I watched the whole Michigan game and when they beat them I told my mama that I wanted to be recruited by them. I told her I hoped they would have interest in me.

"My mom is not big on hoping - she says not to say hope, but to say I am doing this, or it is going to happen. So she told me to say 'I am going to be recruited by Appalachian State' and things will work out that way. So, I did. I don't say 'hope' anymore."

When the phone call came to Barney's home and an ASU coach was on the other line, Barney was excited, but a little surprised, too.

"It was a little scary at first," he said laughing. "That's a higher power working right there. I was really excited when it all happened, though."

Though the Mountaineers were obviously high on Barney's list, the senior didn't receive an offer from them until about a week ago. So, last weekend, when Barney was at Coastal Carolina for a visit, he committed to the Chanticleers.

"Last weekend when I went to Coastal Carolina, I decided to commit to them, but then Appalachian State offered me and I came up for the visit and it was just the right place for me. So, I had to call Coastal Carolina and decommit from them. They tried to talk me out of it, but I just told them that Appalachian State was the better place for me."

In addition to his offer from Coastal Carolina, Barney held offers from Georgia Southern, South Carolina State and Morgan State.

At ASU, Barney will play as a slot receiver, punt returner and kick returner.

He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds, bench presses 275 pounds and squats 350.

As a senior he played quarterback for Irmo High. He completed 78-of-112 passes for 642 yards and nine touchdowns, rushed for 1,076 yards and 19 scores in 134 carries, recorded a 15.6 yard/per return average with two going for scores and he averaged 38.3 yards on each kickoff return, taking one to the house.

He expects to report to ASU on June 20.

Out of Western PA:

Some of you may not know that our Jayhawks very own Adam Lock,(pictured on the left), is in big demand as well! But in the same hand, this shouldn't be a big surprise to any of you. I know it wasn't to me!

Adam is still in the process of recruiting so I can't say too much here, but this past weekend, Adam and his family paid a visit to Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Where he is one of their top football recruits, I might add! According to Adams family, the visit went very well, and the university, naturally liked what they seen in Adam.

By Stephen Hargis, Assistant Sports Editor

Red Bank offensive linemen Taylor and Tylor Chambers have committed to sign with Jacksonville State University. Each made the Times Free Press Best of Preps All-City football team.

Tylor originally committed to Marshall but wanted to continue playing football with his brother. Both were two-year starters after transferring from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe to Red Bank, helping the Lions go 24-2 with two Region 4-4A championships.

Rest of the story is available at Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Jeannette is not in Central PA, it's in Western PA, and is part of the WPIAL. The town is about 20 miles east of Pittsburgh. They were once part of the powerful Foothills Conference, playing at the then highest level of PA football, but are now a AA school.

I took a quick peek at his rivals page (limited cuz i'm not a member), and hes listed at 6'5 185 with 4.7 speed. Get him up to 200-215 or so with his speed and he should be a monster. Looks like he chose Southern over Akron, Kent, and Eastern Michigan, and also garnered serious attention from Purdue. Good pickup for the jags it seems.

Thanks, right now that's our only commitment so far, if he comes to Baton Rouge, he'll have time to develop before he's expected to hit the field.

Another big O-Lineman for Montana. Kyle Kmet out of San Diego. 6'4" 310 lbs. Watch the video for #78. He looks mean.

Furman is sitting at 11 right now. We are still in the running against Vanderbilt for a quarterback they want to play receiver (BL going to a spread look?)

From everything I've read, Furman has just about landed all of their top choices at each position.

Four more names have surfaced for ASU...

-WR Malcolm Beyah out of GA runs in the 4.4 range and has been recruited by a number of SEC teams. He is leaning heavily toward ASU. Rivals has him as a three star player.

-DE Lanston Tanyi out of Shelby, NC has been listed as a target for ASU by Scout.com for a while now. According to Rivals, it looks like he is leaning toward App. They are unsure what position he will play since we are quickly becoming loaded at DE. He is a two star player on Scout.com

-QB DeAndre Presley out of Tampa, FL is emerging as a target for ASU. He is the dual-threat type and me be the fall back option in case they can't land Dan Parker out of Miami. App coaches came away very impressed with Presley in a recent in-home visit.

-QB David Noshay out of Parkland, FL is a 6A All-State First-teamer listed as a utility player. He is a one star player on Scout.com

These players are rumored to making official visits this weekend.

He has a pretty good arm, played for an underacheiving team. Although that wasn't really the offense's fault.

I am liking the way this class is starting to take shape. Hopefully we can get some real impact players to fill in some of the gaps lost to graduation.
