Had a couple of guys from the Lackawanna factory and another big WR from Hudson Valley CC...didn't list them as they are technically not portaling?!
Also got great news that two VERY important guys are coming back for Albany for a final run. Scotty Houseman (starting center) who went down in week 3. My guess is that with our frosh Dugery putting in a solid performance, Scotty will move to a tackle position. He's a big boy and fits the role. Also, DeSean Winston, our starting safety who broke his forearm against Marshall is coming back. He was a big loss and impacted our depth. Transferred in from Temple.

SFA 93 I think you guys will like the play of Josiah Cotton. I was hoping he would be back for one more year at Samford. Our DC left, so that might have been one factor, but was there a connection that you know of at SFA?

Sorry, I have no idea, all I know is we have our 2nd year DC Mike Mutz who came over from Tulane, and our defensive line coach is Ty Warren who seems to be a big time recruiter.

Plus he will get to play one more game in his home state of Georgia, when the Jacks travel to the newest member of the UAC the West Georgia Wolves in Carrollton.

We are set at LB with Cotton in there.

We picked up 2 of your guys from portal. Not sure if they got full schollies or not, since we lost so little to graduation, and also picked up 2 from Kansas St and 2 from WMU before these.

Not sure we need much help at RB, though we just lost former stud RB Cole Mueller .. he had fallen off after season ending injury in 1st game of 2022. Wasn't able to regain starting spot. So maybe Glatz will get a few more reps now.

But how about Steffen ... Spack seems to like him as a high motor guy. Did you like him much ?

I'm doing fine. Our new HC looks promising and seems like he has a bit more of a handle on what it takes to run a DI football program. If our basketball programs are any indication, moving to the OVC looks like it's going to work out really well for us. Hopefully football starts to follow suit in the next few years. I'm glad we were able to work out a continuation of our series against each other, at least over the next couple of years; I'm hoping to make it down to Normal for the game on 9/14 if I can.

Glatz - the#2 RB on the worst rushing offense in the FCS. Now, a lot of that was on the O-Line not opening holes (or doing much to slow down defenders), but we had a total of 524 yards on the ground last year and he was 217 yards of that across 9 games (24.11 ypg). So, really...most of what I saw him do was get the ball and run right into a wall of defenders.

Steffen - we were also at the bottom of the rankings for defenses last year. Steffen had 10 solo tackles, 27 total, 4.5 of them for loss. Out of the D-Linemen, he was the one with the highest numbers, but I don't really remember anything specific about him.

When the team is good, I spend a decent amount of time looking at individual players, tracking stats, etc. When they are what they've been the past few years though, I find it better for my mental health to not really invest much energy into the details. I still go to the games and root for them, but don't really look for who's playing well and who isn't.

The Mocs picked up 13 from the portal so far. (1 P5, 5 G5, 4 FCS, 3 D2) Most have 2 or 3 years left. MAny are somewhat local kids that want to come home, or players the staff tried to recruit a few years back and maintained the relationship with.

On the Flip Side of that....The Mocs have had 10 players Enter the Portal. 5 were not going to crack the two deep. The other 5 included 2 OLs (both graduated with one year left), a back up LB, a starting TE, and the number 1 WR from last season.

See info about Mercer’s 3 “blockbuster” portal acquisitions for their Offense (RB, WR, OL) this week - heavy with FBS/P5 offers - in the “SoCon Off-season 2024” thread, if interested. Not gonna reproduce the detailed info on them over into this thread.

Mercer also added an FBS G5 Safety transfer last week. Bears are building back Bear-ier.

FUBear, you may have mentioned this before but what are your thoughts on Carter Peevey and his transfer to Maine? For a Georgia kid born and bred and having a very good senior year his decision to transfer to Maine who has had 2 down years in a row was a head scratcher. The offense does all of it's WR's returning one of which is Randy Moss's son Montigo so it is possible for him to have a good year at Maine. I have not heard about NIL money for Maine players but they do have a program in place so maybe that also was a factor to transfer as well, just a hunch nothing concrete there. Anyhow let us know what you think of him, he seems to be a dual threat with his arm and legs.

Peevy’s Dad played and was an All SoCon OLman for Furman and then his offspring (Carter) was an All SoCon player for Mercer. Just doesn’t get any better than that combination! xthumbsupx

Don’t really have a lot of thoughts…other than happiness for him and hope his experience as a Black Bear is a good one.

Carter was a warrior for Mercer. He accepted and excelled in whatever role he was asked to play. He can run tough with good size/strength, and no fear AND he can run fast as he showed outracing an SEC 1st Team Defense for 75 yards on the 1st play of the game @ Ole Miss last season. He’s not particularly elusive in the pocket, but he can escape and turn a sack into a short gain AND he’ll stand in there and take a hit, if needed. Obviously, he can throw a nice deep ball - Ty James avg’d almost 20 yds/catch. Coach Cronic’s Offense is clearly complicated with a myriad of shifts, motions, and QB fakes / misdirections. Carter didn’t seem to have any difficulties executing all of that. The only ‘knock’ FUBeAR might have is that he may not have developed into a great passer over the years. He’s not Dan Marino. Maybe that’ll come under new Coaching. If so, he has other tools that are NFL quality.

Greetings from your week 2 opponent ISU Redbirds ... I assume our first match up ever ? We'll be traveling to your place in Florence on Sep 7. We open at Iowa the week before. Looking forward to seeing your football program.

By coincidence, we also got a P5 QB transfer from Kansas State ... QB Jake Rubley was 4 star out of HS and touted as their biggest getin decades. K St has gotten a lot better of late and he didn't break thru .. so we got him after having good success with P5 QB transfer Zack Annexstad from Minnesota, especially last season. But he was injured and our #2 came in a did surprisingly well by ISU's mostly anemic standards .. not Coach Spack's strong suit. We have a very spotty QB history since our Natty run in 2014-15. So last season was a very pleasant suprise for us 2 have 2 quality QBs. But Annexstad graduated (UDFA in Miami I think) and our #2 Rittenhouse looked really good in last 2 games filling in for Annexstad. But we still managed to pick up Rubley and they are competing for the job. We also got a new OC Peterson with strong QB credentials steering the offense the last 2 seasons ... we like him a lot an Spack seemed to give him more reins in his year 2 last season.

We've got a lot coming back so this is most optimistic we've been since 2017 .. but that season proved disappointing. We'll have 55 JRs and SRs plus 17 of 21 starters, and very adequate replacements for 3 of the 4 lost starters.

Anyway .. looking forward to a brand new opponent and up and coming FCS program.

We did recruit some freshman in the traditional recruiting period, but this is mostly to fill out the roster that was decimated when our previous coach retired in early January. I believe we had about 30 players transfer out.

I will be curious to see how the influx of transfers can mesh with your program. I am rooting a bit for Jayden Johannsen since I grew up with his dad. It would be fun to see a SD kid starting for you when you play in Brookings. It would be even more fun to see him lead you to victory over his original team from Fargo when you play them.

Yeah, I'm curious if the new players can mesh as well. New first time head coach and new staff we really need an influx of talent and energy to even think about competing in the MVFC. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

I've heard nothing but great things about the Johannsen kid. Barring anything crazy he should be the favorite to be QB1. Just hope we can protect him. And it would be great to give NDSU a competitive game when they make the trek to Murray in October....looking forward to improvement this season.
