On defense - we're losing Kam Brown - an All American conrner - he's the only starter on the backend, but we're losing some other guys that played quite a bit - safety Clay Fields III, safety - Romeo Wykle, and corner Telly Plummer - all of those to graduation and exhaustion of eligibility. In the middle we're losing Bo Spearman who's entered the portal - he started early in the year but lost his starting job - he's a talented guy though. Yes, we're losing Jay Person on the edge - he's graduated and has exhausted his eligibility. We're also losing Ben Brewton, who was a beat opposite of Jay - also to graduation. Nick Charles is in the portal - and he played some but not a lot.

On the offensive side we're losing five starters - Running back Ailym Ford and OT Griffen McDowell to graduation and TE Camdon Overton and OG Jerimiah Katt to the portal. Katt wanted to get back closer to home (Arizona) and probably wouldn't have been the starter if we hadn't lost Bryce Goodner in the summer. I'm not sure why Overton went to the portal - he was our top pass catching TE (though we have a freshman TE the coaches really like). And of course we lost Jamoi Mays to the portal as well as backup receiver Tyler Smith.

We also lost our punter (and kicker the second half of the year - Clayton Crile, and our long snapper to graduation.

I'm sure I forgot something - but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Not at all sure I am right on all of this, but I believe that Hiers and Smith are both out of eligibility. As for Jay Stanton, he is in the Portal with one year left. I am uncertain about Noah Martin. He was never red-shirted and played first in 2021 (spring and fall), but I have not seen his notice of Portal and he is listed as a 2023 Senior. Some other of our very good players have opted for the Portal primarily LB Josiah Cotton, DE Kobe Stewart, and DB Kourtlan Marsh.

VMI had a back up, first year off. tackle go in the portal, picked up by Maine. only underclassman who has left, so far. 12 seniors are in portal (six are four year letter winners), two (a DB and WR) will come back for ninth semester, and graduate next December.

During the recent coaching searches I've heard the phrase "a coach that knows how to WORK THE PORTAL".....When I unpack that, I think there are two very distinct ways to "work the portal" as a coach. 1. You know how to recruit guys who are already in college. And 2. you know how to keep your key guys from entering it. I think the coaches that best "work the portal" can do both!!!

Dez Reid would be cited as our best player the first half of the season, but honestly our offensive line play was why we raced into the top ten. Injuries there led to our poor finish more than anything IMO. Reid and Censere Lee both have committed to Pitt following Kade Bell, but those are probably the positions we are deepest at.

If WCU will continue to be a playoff team probably has more to do with if we can stay healthy on O and get better on D. We have 4 capable RBs and a stable of WRs so I expect we’ll be fine on O. We also brought in Tusculum’s head coach to replace our DC - a former UF linebacker with ties to Coach Bell.

We need guys in the trenches.

As for “working the portal” it is pretty hard to keep your guys when they get offers to go to the ACC. Sucks for WCU that we lose Kade Bell and 2 really good skill guys to the Pitt Panthers, but you can’t really blame guys for making that kind of leap. At first I was upset about it, but in the end those 2 players were going in the portal and now I don’t really care what team they went to as long as it was a big step up and was not a team on our schedule (side note - won’t be surprised to see us go to Pitt sometime in the future).

Andreas Keaton was our other big loss, and looks like he is headed to Temple.

Any of the guys who are grad transfers I actually applaud them. They are using football to get both an undergrad and grad degree, and at the FCS level that is what really matters. Heck, with 6 years of eligibility due to Covid, I expect guys like Huff will probably earn 2 grad degrees. Kudos to him and all the guys like him.

Hard on us fans, but crazy good opportunities for the players.

Yes, I am now leaning more towards Portal PLUS key losses to graduation or whatever reason. ANY KEY LOSSES - for whatever the reason.. graduation, portal, decide they are done with playing etc.

Proves ya'll are recruiting good players (pitt, pitt, temple etc). Yeah, it has almost become like the debate in college basketball - do the Duke and UNC teams go the route of "one and done" or 3/4 year players in college basketball. For us here in Socon football, do we Get a good solid football guy who will stay 4/5 years or if elite you probably only get 2/3 years before a portal move to a G5 or ACC or whatever. But how do you turn down elite talent? On the flip side if the recruit isn't good enough to get PT by year 3 you probably lose him... but that's always been a factor - that if a guy realizes he may Never see the field except for mop-up duty he is likely to leave.

I'm not trying to troll here, but it seems to me as if Coach Bell pushed all his chips in on this season with a really strong group of seniors and transfers in an attempt to win the SoCon and make the playoffs, and with a great start was looking to get that done. There were some injuries that created a late season spiral (something some of us Mocs fans are well aware of)...I guess a better (less trollish) way of asking is...does the spiral have anything to do with players leaving the Whee? Will he still be able to sell recruits (HS and portal) on the idea of a Championship season in the Whee? Does the Mass Exodus of almost all of your offensive production and a main core of the Defense (graduation or other) make the recruits take notice? Will Western reload enough to stay in the top tier fight? or was coach Bell just another flash in the pan that dies back to 5 and 6 win seasons? Also, how much will the departure of Cade impact him?

There were some injuries that created a late season spiral (something some of us Mocs fans are well aware of)...I guess a better (less trollish) way of asking is...does the spiral have anything to do with players leaving the Whee? Will he still be able to sell recruits (HS and portal) on the idea of a Championship season in the Whee? Does the Mass Exodus of almost all of your offensive production and a main core of the Defense (graduation or other) make the recruits take notice? Will Western reload enough to stay in the top tier fight? or was coach Bell just another flash in the pan that dies back to 5 and 6 win seasons? Also, how much will the departure of Cade impact him?

We still have according to the media the all-Socon/Offensive POTY at QB in Gonzalez. We also return at least 5 WRs who had tons of playing time. Dez Reid was a difference-maker, but he also got hurt both years he was in Cullowhee, so we have at least 5 capable RBs starting with Adams (who averaged 6.1 YPC compared to Reid's 6.8). Our offensive "spiral" started when we lost 2 (and later a 3rd) starting offensive lineman. We return over 1200 yards and 6 TDS of production on the ground. We'll have 4 guys who had at least 15 receptions, and in total the group of pass-catchers we have returning hauled in 14 TD receptions. We have a couple of WRs who got recognized as top FR, along with 2 really good looking RBs who we were able to redshirt. So if we can stay healthy up-front I expect the offense to be fine. We have been a handful on that side since Bell got here.

In terms of the offers we have made and guys who have "Twitter committed" (which means nothing), it looks like Bell will continue to bring in very talented guys - still primarily from FL. I'd flip some of the negativity to say we might get more really good recruits who see a path to come to WCU and get to move to places like the ACC after a couple of very productive years. I don't particulary like that path, but as some others have mentioned in different threads the stepping-stone approach is probably going to be typical for FCS schools until something changes.

Updated the WCU list - Ed Jones IV entered the portal. He was a ball-hawk who made some big plays on defense. Looking more like a defensive rebuild in Cullowhee for our new DC, but I'd guess a lot of people felt like we needed a rebuild, anyway. He is another guy who will be on his 3rd school if he transfers (JuCo -> WCU -> ???).

Thanks - i know most are interested in recruiting today but honestly, at a good program, those recruits won't see the field this year.. or next - unless a freak. It's more about who you keep right now.

Ed Jones played some safety, some LB, and generally moved around. He had a few big INTs, had a few sacks, and was generally a guy who found the football. He had an INT return for a TD that was crucial in our win against Chattanooga.

Eli Purcell (LB) Wofford to Tennessee / starting ILB

WCU has the 3 big losses that are mentioned, but as this has shifted to not just guys in the portal but also others graduating we lose 2 really good offensive lineman (Coulter snd Smith), our tall WR (White), as well as a couple of D-lineman and CBs to exhausting their eligibility.

Dez Reid would be cited as our best player the first half of the season, but honestly our offensive line play was why we raced into the top ten. Injuries there led to our poor finish more than anything IMO. Reid and Censere Lee both have committed to Pitt following Kade Bell, but those are probably the positions we are deepest at.

If WCU will continue to be a playoff team probably has more to do with if we can stay healthy on O and get better on D. We have 4 capable RBs and a stable of WRs so I expect we’ll be fine on O. We also brought in Tusculum’s head coach to replace our DC - a former UF linebacker with ties to Coach Bell.

We need guys in the trenches.

I know about Keaton.. big loss for Socon.. now at Temple. Was a great DB. know of Marlon Alexander (#90) - Nose - was a Grad student this year and is out of eligibility. Starting NT Gone

Rod Gattison (#2) - Starting CB - out of eligibility too? is that right?
Who are the DL and other DBs? Any that starters?
