This game will kickoff at 2:30PM MT on Saturday 12/16 and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. The winner advances to the national championship game and will face either #5 Albany or #1 South Dakota State. I expanded the stats breakdown this week to include some season totals with turnovers and redzone attempts and additional averages like sacks and TFLs forced/allowed:

Going to be a hell of a battle and a frenzied crowd. Griz have two starting OL who suited up against Furman but didn't play hopefully coming back. We'll see if that's enough...xeekx

Did y’all just hear NDSU’s QB disrespect everything about Montana Football?

He said they’ve played in some pretty big venues, so they aren’t too worried about the environment.

Yes, most certainly.

In fact, the game of Football, itself, was fashioned out of an ice shelf, during a blinding blizzard, at 29,033 feet in the Montana mountains, where the temperature was (and is) −459.66 Fahrenheit during a volcanic eruption creating a sound at 193.99 dB, which has yet to subside, on a field, on campus, in Missoula, at the University of Montana.

Given the proximity of Missoula to the Yellowstone caldera, this could absolutely happen during the game

So you watched today's South Dakota game too. I also saw that. I was confused if holding is permitted in the Dakotas. It's often a penalty in other parts of the country.

I wondered too if after the game your offensive linemen give the opposing defenses back the large chunks of jersey they tore off? Or, do the MVFC teams just hold onto them and do an end of the season exchange?

I don't want to just sit here and say I'm happy to be here, but I never imagined in September and October that we'd be here.

The theme of the second half of our season has surely been revenge, and what better than a chance at revenge against the squad that ended our season last year?

Super stoked for this one. A true blue blood heavyweight FCS classic in the making.

The thing that scares me the most as a Bison fan is Junior Bergen. NDSU has been pretty bad covering kickoffs this year and their punter hasn't been consistent in getting the hang time needed for his coverage to get downfield. I'd expect NDSU may surrender some pretty decent field position on special teams just to try to keep Bergen from busting a big one.

Yea, Tab wears the fur coat, I think the misses does to and maybe the little Tabs as well.

I doubt the spread will be 18 but it should be. Smart money is on Montana regardless of the spread and take the over because with the altitude, the Bison are gonna have to reach deep into the twos and threes on D and they have pretty much dropped their pants in every blowout game this year. Bet the ranch, leverage your 401k, cash out the kids college funds and bet heavy on the Griz. #BOOKIT.

Added the stats breakdown to the first post - there's some really intriguing statistical matchups between the Bison offense and the Griz defense:

1) The Bison offense is 4th nationally at 241.8 rush yards per game and the Griz defense is 9th allowing only 97.2 rush yards per game.
2) The Bison offense is 1st nationally in team passing efficiency and the Griz defense is 4th in defensive pass efficiency.
3) The Bison offense is 3rd nationally in 3rd down conversion rate at 51.5% and the Griz defense is also 3rd in opponent 3rd down conversion rate at 29.2%.

I'm going to guess those NDSU offensive averages to down and the Montana defensive averages go up after this game but those are big time stat categories that these units have basically been winning all year and someone has to lose them on Saturday.

Not sure about the Griz fans with Hauck but I'd guess that if NDSU loses this game the huckleberries in our fan base will be out again calling for Entz's head. I'm also nervous about transfer portal announcements if/when the NDSU season ends which will be another opportunity to pile on the coaches. There are allegedly multiple current Bison players sitting on 6 figure NIL offers from P5 schools.

Fans over-reacting to losses? That wouldn't happen. Not for big wins either. I've noticed over the years that fans - especially those on the internet - tend to be pretty consistent and seldom over-react.

The Griz looked really awful the first three weeks of the season with the kid at QB

I think they were angry about Bohl and rallied around Klieman, and it seemed like Klieman was more transparent with the team and they wanted to end on a high note. If Entz was transparent with the players I could see them rallying, if not I could see the team crumbling and a lot of anger over him leaving for a lower position (I know a job at a big time program is huge, but I would be frustrated to see my HC leave for a positions coach job).

In fairness not a real step down.

This "Positions Coach" job probably comes with a four or five-fold pay increase. Don't think they can dog him for that.

Though what it may do is push a few more players towards the idea of chasing dollars too.

I fully know for his career it isn't a stepdown and is a step up. Just saying as a player I would be annoyed. It is just too much a sign that FCS is all small-time. I would imagine most players have their eyes open to the current realities, and fully understand this.

I agree with you. The players are probably annoyed, undoubtedly the recruits are too.

I understand and support coaches' decisions to climb the ladder. Over a stretch of little more than a decade Montana sent three head coaches off to chase their dreams and collect much larger paychecks. I didn't have a problem with those, except I thought Joe Glenn handled it very poorly. I don't think the team had time to shower from their last game before Joe was in his packed car, and he hollered out the window as he drove away that he had taken a different job. Believe he nearly hit the water boy as he squealed out of the parking lot.

What I don't understand with your coach Entz is the timing on his announcement. This news could have waited for another week, or three if needed. Seems odd, doesn't it?

Yeah, I don't understand that either. Early signing day is coming up in 10 days and the team has a pretty big game to prepare for - seems like a very inopportune time to make this kind of announcement when he's leaving to be a position coach.

-1 NDSU per DraftKings

Professor Chaos
December 11th, 2023, 09:19 AM
For NDSU this is the third week in a row on the road, distractions all over the place with the head coach leaving and NIL offers flying around for current players, one of the toughest road environments in the FCS, Griz defense has the horses to match the Bison offense, Griz special teams likely has a big advantage with Bergen... there's a lot going against NDSU this week which is why I'm hedging and picking the Griz to win (same as I did in the playoff pick 'em) - I'll be happy if I'm wrong but can say "I called it!" if I'm right.

However, this Bison defense has knocked out the opposing starting QBs each of the last 2 weeks and, apparently, the Griz don't have much at QB behind McDowell. If they run him 20+ times again he may not finish this game...

I also picked the Bison to lose their regular season finale to UNI and in Bozeman so I'm on a nice streak of being wrong about them losing. :)

It's going to be the norm since the same thing happened when the last two NDSU coaches left. There ain't no way USC is going to postpone announcing the hiring of an assistant D coordinator or whatever Entz will be for a week or a month if NDSU beats Montana.

I guess it beats having your coach fired in the middle of the season.

Idk... I mean Northwestern and David Braun waited until after the natty last year before announcing he was leaving and that was to be their DC (at the time). Maybe NDSU/Entz wanted this just as much as USC did so they could get a new head coach in place before signing day??? You're right that there's no good time for this but I'm not really buying that USC wanted to announce it so they did - I think there were more factors at play.

Hey, I'm not claiming any sort of foul play. But if our gameplan is either A) so predictable that your sideline knows the exact play we're running, or B) we are tipping our own plays, then it's both kudos to your team for outsmarting us, and concerning for me that we have less than one week to fix it.

Again, if you had come to WaGriz, you would know how easy to verify that it is because the fans are right ontop of the players and coaches, and the visiting Furman fans are only one section over from that.

It's just an old familiar line that Coaches (FUBeAR was one) always hear from 'knowledgeable' fans... "I can sit in the stands and call every play we run. We are so predictable." ... but can't name 5 actual Football plays. "They knew all of our plays. They were calling them out." - Uh huh...and the 70 people on the sidelines were calling out 69 other things also....

It's all horse-hockey.

You're resistant, because you think I'm trying to downplay the stellar defensive results by Furman, and I'm not.

But if multiple people are corroborating that they were calling our exact plays out from the sideline, our coaches better figure that **** out ahead of NDSU. Because if they tee off on McDowell, it's game over.

I don't really buy the sign stealing stuff. I think it had way more to do with Furman's outstanding front 7 and us having to play 3rd stringers on our offensive line.

I think another big reason we were more ineffective than we've been in a while is that McDowell played probably his worst game since the Idaho State game. He had some production, but just made uncharacteristically bad decisions all night.

It doesn't have to be sign stealing. It can also mean that our playcalling is so predictable based on formations, movements, etc., that they have too good of an idea of what play we're calling. Is that from Roper knowing Hauck? Or teams having enough film on McDowell? Or Hauck offenses in general?

FUBeAR is beyond certain that FUBeAR doesn’t require Silenoz’ (or anyone’s) validation for him to know how good Furman’s Defense was this season. FUBeAR has eyes, Football knowledge & experience as a College Player & Coach, and FUBeAR can read & do some limited cipherin’.

All of the ish you are talking about in this line of a football conversation is horse-hockey. It’s like those 2 idiots/posers on the Griz podcast (hmmm?) saying a Furman OLman was tipping run or pass by his stance, when probably more than 60% of Furman’s passes are RPO’s. He doesn’t know if it’s gonna be run or pass, but our podcast geniuses do.

Chris Walker played 2 drives for us at LT, and we gained 102 of our 350 total yards and scored 10 points, including our only TD before OT.

I think that had way more to do with the lack of production the rest of the game when we had our backup LT and 3rd string LG trying to hold those guys back.

We just saw guys losing on the LOS and McDowell making a lot of questionable reads. The plays were there to be made when the OL held up. I'm not buying that they figured us out so completely.

If FUBeAR played 5 billion years ago, it would be more recently than either of those podcast idiots/posers actually earned a letter playing Football for Montana.

But - yeah - FUBeAR hasn't Coached since the 2013 season, so it's been a while. Has the game changed that much in the past 10 years? Maybe it has. How much has it changed since you last played and/or Coached College Football?

I think any team that had 3 guys who all play on the same side get hurt would struggle immensely, and that's not necessarily a depth problem.

It's kind of like Griz fans last year complaining that our backup QB couldn't beat two top 10 teams on the road. 95%+ of other FCS backup QBs couldn't do that, either. Any team relying on their 3rd string OL in multiple positions is going to struggle.

My sincere hope is that Walker and Brown can play this weekend.

I mean, they also run a high school offense with much easier blocking concepts, and their guys struggle with pass protection when they need to do it. Quite a bit easier to reload in that system. lol

IMO, it looks like the Bison should attack between the tackles with the run game and QB run game. The Griz are pretty decent on the edge in the run game. A gap power with the FB lead blocking looks like it will produce against some of these defensive alignments the Griz use.

Brown's was an ankle (sprain?), and Walker's was a knee issue that looked bad, but he managed to be able to run around last weekend, so probably not as bad as feared.

The wide splits are something we started using in the Idaho State game (or around there), I think.

Bison routed the Griz last year in the playoffs 49-26 and rushed for 453 yards with a 10.8 ypc average. They do that again in the rushing game it will be an easy win for the Bison.

For the Bison make the Griz prove they can stop the run. Mix in play action passing. Now do the Bison pass to set up the run?

Last year the Bison had 4 TD runs OVER 68 yards! And a fumble recovery in the endzone. A 21-20 game in the 3rd QTR turned into a blowout. Run D needs to be tough all game.

This Griz defense seems to be night and day better compared to the defense they brought to the Fargodome last year - especially on the d-line. I think the Bison o-line will have their work cut out for them especially with big #99 (Gubner) anchoring that Griz defense. Cam Miller is going to have to be better throwing the ball than he's been in their last 2 outdoor games vs Montana St and SDSU because I don't think the Bison will have anywhere near the success running the ball that they did in last year's playoffs.

Maybe not to the total of 450+ like last year but I think they can run on this defense. 3-3-5 where they crowd the line of scrimmage on pressures only takes the RB getting to the 2nd level quick and they are gone...example last year and multiple long TD runs.

IMO, the Bison will pass to set up the run. Cam has been playing really well the end of the season and playoffs and it takes it really tough to defend an offense when both run/pass are moving the ball. Then add in QB run game.

I wouldn't say Miller was playing all that well over in Bozeman.

He is one of your top runners and he gained a total of 15 yards rushing. He completed 5 of 13 passes for 66 yards.
Your other QB, Payton, is also one of your top runners. He had 20 yards rushing, and completed 1 of 1 passes.

The bobcat's defense thoroughly stymied both of these guys. Can't say if the Grizzly defense will do as well, but I can say they are better than MSU's.

Then he (Miller) was 13-15 for 210 against a USD defense that is statistically better than MSU's. NDSU still ran for 324 against MSU although there is some lost yardage there with sacks IIRC. All about matchups. Plus the Bison have been running better with an OL shakeup late in the season.

IMO, the Bison can run against this Griz defense from what I've seen. Now, they have to go out there and prove it.

I'm not trying to sandbag at all. I think the oddsmakers are right and this game is a tossup, I'm optimistic but I know it's not a gimme. Yes a loss will hurt but before too long we'll look back at the USD & UND games as what was ultimately our downfall this season.

My point is that from the Griz point of view, you've been rolling along for 8 games now beating 4 top 10 teams in the process, you have home field advantage while NDSU is playing their 3rd straight road game (plus NDSU didn't get a bye), and we're going through the distraction of a coaching change the week of the game. The thought "if we don't beat them now, we're NEVER beating them" is sure to be out there.

This is exactly what cat fans said about our game against them last year after they kicked our asses. "Damn, your one chance at beating us ever again is gone". Whoops.

Maybe other teams' fans get defeatist like that, but I've never felt that way.

Personally, if we're talking about doubts creeping in, I would much rather lose to NDSU this weekend than win and then get pasted in the championship, because that's actually the point where I'll start to wonder if I'll ever see a championship again in my lifetime. If this Montana team can make the semis, I think we can do it again, but getting to yet another championship game and failing to deliver would hurt me so much worse. lol

This Griz team is better than that Griz team....and that Bison team is better than this Bison team....therefore through 4th wall comparative scores, gimme the Griz by 21.

If this Montana team can make the semis, I think we can do it again, but getting to yet another championship game and failing to deliver would hurt me so much worse. lol

The winner of this game is gonna get pasted in the natty, so I guess we should be cheering for each other in this game? xlolx

Actually, if we're categorizing the worst thing that could happen to the Griz this season, it would absolutely be winning this weekend and then losing to another CAA school in the championship game that we're favored against. xbawlingx

It’s rather humorous to me that all the Griz fans want to talk about is their meaningless regular season win in 2015, and no mention of multiple pastings at the hands of the bison when the games actually mattered in the playoffs. This selective memory Super Bowl syndrome is very Sioux-esk.

IMO, even if the Bison have half the rushing yards compared to last year's playoff matchup and a decent passing game, they have a very good chance of winning tomorrow.

Reporter Kyle Hansen had a feature on Chris Walker at practice this week, so good chance he'll be good to go.

No idea about Liam Brown, though.

I'm more concerned about our starting Safeties Ryder Meyer and Nash Fouch who both left last week's game with injuries.

Your QB Miller seems like a nice guy, so I am happy for him.

After his season ends in Missoula later today, he will be able to fondly remember that game... You know that one in So Dakota when he played so well.
