Why are the Bobcats getting 2 first place votes? We lost to SDSU and that still matters.

Much like the Idaho/Montana thing last week...a couple of people (not Bobcats) seem to think that the resume' at this point is looking stronger. Going on the road and winning impressively against another top team can sway when looking at the close road loss to SDSU I would think.

I'm not even mentioning personnel that is back in action now.

This week's poll article: https://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-8-top-25-results-5/

Congrats Lafayette for their first appearance in the AGS Top 25 since week 11 of 2009.

I have similar criticisms of this poll that I had of the STATS poll in terms of where the MVFC teams are at. I think the pecking order should be SDSU, USD, UNI, YSU, UND, and then NDSU/SIU in whichever order. There's a lot of dominant head-to-head wins (YSU over SIU, UNI over UND, UND over NDSU) being essentially discounted in the consensus. I don't think there's enough from the teams that lost to offset those head-to-head results. The good thing these should get sorted out with more matchups between these teams coming but it's a mess right now.

Also kind of eye opening to see the second highest CAA team (Villanova) all the way down at #18. There's either a lot of mediocrity in the CAA this year or just a lot of parity and they're beating up on each other.

True, but teams get better, and worse, as seasons progress. An early H2H mean less as time passes from that game. Not saying I agree in this case, it wasn't me, but somebody thinks so. And there are lots of examples of teams splitting H2Hs (regular season and playoffs). Not sure it matters, at this point.

To me, it looks like they are there and that one slip up against the #1 team and their hours doesn't change that for me but I still have at 2 for now. I could make the case they are the best team is all I'm going with and I could stand fairly solidly behind it.

SDSU and MSU are equal on a neutral field I am damn sure. Both are a cut above the rest right now.

All true, but until Montana St actually beats South Dakota St, the Jackrabbits are still #1 …assuming they remain undefeated

I got it in last minute so I didn't get the email response yet, but here is my ballot. I struggled with the MVFC teams. Looking back I probably should have dropped the North Dakota teams (particularly UND) a bit. It feels like there is more parity in the FCS this year.

Idaho
South Dakota
Delaware
Sacramento st
Montana
Western Carolina
Incarnate Word
UT Martin
NC Central
North Dakota
NDSU

Also kind of eye opening to see the second highest CAA team (Villanova) all the way down at #18. There's either a lot of mediocrity in the CAA this year or just a lot of parity and they're beating up on each other.

I took a hard look at my MVFC rankings after reading your post, I certainly didn't meet your guidance. I thought that UNI's shut out win over ND was a big eye opener, but since they weren't ranked for a couple weeks, AND the Weber State loss at home for UNI looks worse than any other ranked MVFC team's loss. I say that knowing that Weber's intended QB starter for the season was injured early in the season. But it's hard to factor that in at this juncture. I listened to the Wedge Podcast a couple weeks ago when they predicted a UNH win over Albany and likened the history of UNH and UNI both looking out of the picture and then coming up with a big win to stay in the conversation. I both laughed and gave'em a right on for the observation. So I understand when voters are a bit wary of moving either team to quickly when they begin a comeback.

As far as the CAA, if it proves anything conclusively it's that 15 teams is way to many to have in a conference. There really isn't any more parity, if you put more items in any distribution it is likely to create a wider range. There is parity between 5 or 6 teams at the top, at what level each of those teams can play is hard to establish. Next year it could be much better with 16 teams if they divide the Coastal Athletic Association into two conferences of 8 teams and each conference team plays all their conference mates each season.

I think early in the year, the moment (combined with crowd noise, to give credit where due) was a bit too much for them. Take away a false start (or 83) in the red zone and it's a different ball game. I'll be happy with a 1 or a 2 seed, makes no difference really. Home until Frisco.

My reasoning for removing Harvard was the win that spring boarded them in looks worse (Holy Cross) coupled with the loss to Princeton. I did have them as one of my first teams out.

Their win against HC is becoming less and less valuable and they lost. I would have dropped them a few spots even if they were on a bye after HC lost to the Pards.

That moves Idaho somewhat securely in front of Sac, which is correct. It also removes ISU-r from the ORV.

You'll get no argument from me there! I'm just saying those false starts were drive killers that took points off the board that at least sends the game to OT if even 1 of the very short FG's were turned into TDs (with the ensuing PAT of course).

Harvard got tossed out quick

St Thomas (MN) - W 45-13 - unranked; early in season; just got doors blown off by Drake (albeit, an improved Drake)
Brown - W 34-31 - while the Bears could be the 3rd best team in the Ivy (although currently sit at 6th), they just got stomped by Cornell
Holy Cross - W 38-28 - great win...at home.
Cornell - W 41-23 - see Brown line.
Howard - W 48-7 - the Bison did lose to Hampton, so this result seems about right.
@ Princeton - L 21-14 - the Tigers did lose to Lafayette 9-12, but they also lost to Bryant, so...

We now have a Lafayette>Princeton>Harvard>Holy Cross head-to-head scenario (with this arrangement based on games 3-7 of the season for the Crimson). Lafayette was ranked this week, Princeton wasn't (likely based a bit on the loss to Bryant). So, should Harvard (and Holy Cross) have been ranked this week (they almost were)?

Your statement could be just pointing out an observation, but taken together with Harvard lobbying throughout the season, it suggests some surprise. While I ranked both Harvard (even above Lafayette) and Holy Cross, and not Princeton (?), it is not much of a stretch to comprehend Harvard only spending three weeks in the top 25.

Finally, I saw somewhere the statement that the UND loss to UNI now hurts NDSU. I selected Harvard's loss as the most significant this week, because it really dampens (IMO) Holy Cross' chances at an at-large...but we'll see.

At this point in the 2017 & 2019 seasons it was almost a given that NDSU & JMU were going to play in Frisco and any other matchup would’ve been surprising. It sure seems that the Jackrabbits and Bobcats are on a similar (re)collision course.

Why are the Bobcats getting 2 first place votes? We lost to SDSU and that still matters.

I thought it would be more than two. You have to do more than win, you have to win by a lot. First thing I thought of after the game was final was we didn't by enough, and there will be talk. I like being undefeated since 9/22, but I rather not be number 1.

I'm about to post something I've never said in 9 years on AGS - You've got UNH ranked way to high. If we win our remaining 4 games I'd see #11 about right. Of course it depends on what a lot of other teams do as well. I suspect you actually know a lot about this UNH team and there is as much high end talent there as any UNH team since 2014 when we went undefeated in FCS play and lost a great Semi Finals game to Ill St. in Durham NH. But I think you may be ranking potential more than performance at this juncture.

Yeah, I'm scratching my head on Delaware as well. Their schedule, to date, is pretty weak. Massey has it as 64. For top 10 teams I would like to see at least a top 50 schedule at this point. Not required, but a warning sign. As a comparison, Lafayette has the number 54 schedule. And mind you, Delaware's strength of schedule is bolstered by a top 10 FBS. Sure Lafayette has Duke, but they aren't Penn St. And while Delaware has no doubt taken care of business, they have only one respectable win. I'm not bashing on them, I have them in my top 10, just, but I think we have them a bit too high. Like UIW as well. And while I'm using Massey as reference, and it certainly isn't definitive, it's a fair accurate assessment as to SOS. Their next four games will tell the tale though. They will easily be top 5 worthy if they win out.

I had to think about this a fair amount, because I wasn’t sure I wanted to have UNH that high.

You might be right (projecting), as I do believe they can go 4-0 to finish the season. I think that, along with the close losses to CMU, Delaware, and a pretty tough (as of the past 3 weeks) Towson, AND the teams losing around them (with a more thorough knowledge of those MVFC teams) makes me think that it is not a stretch for UNH to be at #12.

I’ll wait for others that follow the CAA closely to see their placement of UNH. caribbean, help me out here. ;)

All of that is right on the money El Cid

Stony Brook is just horrible
St Francis is no good
Duquesne? Scrappy but lacking
Hampton has quit
UNH was a nice win but UNH is probably not a playoff team

Now a part of me believes Delaware can be ranked #5 in the coming weeks as it just feels like something intriguing is forming up, but really because of the weak schedule they haven’t had the opportunity to erase the doubts yet

Towson game will tell us

I really think that UNH has played the three best teams in the CAA now: Delaware, Albany and Towson. And while Towson beat UNH also, I felt Delaware was the best of the 3. I understand Delaware fans are a bit gun shy in see their team ascend to the lofty heights of top 5 given the disappointments of the last 10+ years. I also think the Top 3 statement is temporal and the conference is still likely to have considerable upheaval until all of the conference games are in the record books. There are some injury concerns at Delaware, but I'm not going to rank a team before we even see the effect injuries might have on their performance. Delaware has the inside track to the conference title and auto-bid being undefeated in conference and FCS play at the moment. They have 4 more games to play and each of the 4 opponents are competitive teams: Towson, Elon, Campbell and Villanova. They could lose one or two of these games, but for now, I'm satisfied with their #5 ranking.

CH said Delaware was too high…I pointed out that someone that follows the CAA closely (you) had them ranked the same.

You said New Hampshire was ranked too high…You posted your poll and I was curious since CH used your vernacular to point out Delaware was ranked too high to see what his thoughts were on UNH. Since I have yet to see CH’s poll this week, I just wanted to know if he had UNH low and where.

Returning to your post above, I will simply elaborate on post #44 ever so slightly, in that UNH lost to MY #5 by 4 pt, and they just beat the AGS consensus #20 only 10 days ago. Therefore, is UNH at #12 really that unreasonable, even now (not end of season)? They fit in there due to their more recent performances AND due to the recent performances of teams that are around them near that spot.

WOW! If records of such things were kept, FUBeAR would have to believe facing 7 Teams with a combined win total of 9 has to be the “7-games-in” record…and…

…according to Massey, their schedule gets significantly easier from here to the end of the regular season.

Everyone is ragging on their school's performance this year - and I'm not surprised. It's not just FCS - the quality of play across all of division 1 absolutely stinks compared to recent years. I'm constantly in disbelief over nearly every aspect of the game being filled with miscues (except special teams?)

I actually have Villanova a couple spots higher than AGS this week for the first time, but the "Coastal" is hideous. What a terrible vision for a conference. Probably should not get more than 3 bids even if more teams are eligible. 8 wins should be required.

When did Kansas and Nebraska move to the Caribbean?? Literally 8 of the current AGS poll meet your criteria.

I don't understand why you campaign so hard for UIW. They struggle against some really bad teams. They're gonna be an early exit if they even make the playoffs.

I selected Harvard's loss as the most significant this week, because it really dampens (IMO) Holy Cross' chances at an at-large...but we'll see.

just an observation and no surprise at all, it’s what AGS does. They choose not to participate in playoffs and get punished in the polls, no worries really

Maybe more than one loss, but I don't necessarily disagree with this sentiment. It's what AGS does is a gross oversimplification, but obviously there have been many posts supporting that anti-playoff/anti-Ivy sentiment, so I get where you are coming from.

What if the Ivy started two weeks earlier (no finals at the beginning of the semester, right?) and played OOC not within an hour or two drive and/or made it lucrative enough to get schools there (after all, they are the Ivy...they print money, right?)? Would that be enough to limit their poll punishment? It would at least allow for some assessment of "football" quality within the league. Who knows, maybe the Pioneer is actually really good, and they are simply cannibalizing each other. Oh wait, they played OOC games at some distance with some (perceived?) high quality football programs, so we actually have some bearing.

I can appreciate the support for the Ivies, but let's not act like they are being wronged all the time either...I am pretty sure they don't even give it a second thought.

I have A&M ranked over NDSU, if a team has a freaking pulse on offense, they will be in every game against NDSU. NDSU gave up over 100 yards rushing to WIU and I don't care that the 2 and 3 deep played some in the second half. This defense is incredibly soft. Any average to slightly above average team has a chance against NDSU, I personally believe that every team I have ranked above NDSU would beat them head to head on a neutral site. I have zero confidence in their defense. Hell, they don't even have confidence in their own D, won the coin toss against WIU and elected to receive, I am pretty sure that this is the first time this has happened. NDSU is not a good team coming from behind and I am sure, that in the back of their minds, they didn't want to be down to start the game.

Umm…not my team…just an observation
my bad .. not your team, but is your conference. So to finish the point .. this one is incredible.

IW combined opponent record is 9-43 with SOS ranked 78th. Their last 3 games against D-I teams have combined for 2 wins. Yet IW only won by avg of 12 pts per game. And your wondering why AGS is dropping IW ?? 11th is way too generous.

ISUr combined opponent record is 21-30 with SOS ranked 68th. it is our worst SOS ever and by far. We had to reschedule our FBS game against Oklahoma, and had to pick up Lindenwood late. Plus we don't play 3 of the top 5 MVFC teams. This and our defense will kill any playoff chances if we finish 7-4. But we're at least blowing out all of the weak teams on our schedule, except for the road loss to 4-3 EIU.

So is IW consider Top 25 playoff team ... not exactly. They're considered a Top 8 seed. Incarnate Word is #4 on Coaches Poll, #8 on STATS, and #11 on AGS. Their best win is Abilene Christian, Massey #32, by just 7. And they have 4 easy games remaining. They will not play a single playoff team all season. Massey has UTEP ranked 161st which would put them about 30th in FCS ... and also not a playoff team .. in theory.

This is just plain silly.

Yeah, this is a tough one. I dropped them out because it's late enough in the season to not use last year's results or use circular reasoning.
With their baby soft schedule you need to win. Last year the only reason I ranked them was the Buffalo win, and then remaining undefeated. They don't have that this time.
Calling Harvard a good loss because they beat a good HC team is circular. Now that both lost again they're out. HC can get back in by beating Army, but I won't even consider them unless/until that.

Pretty solid poll. Reps for ranking UIW at 19. (I had them at 16 in mine).

Curious with the Harvard ranking. I can still see them being ranked in the 25, but in the top half?

I'm seeing this the same way.

Depending on what others teams do this weekend and if HC clobbers Fordham, I could see them sneaking back into the 25.

But, without any "good" win this year (Yale, Colgate, Bucknell, and Merrimack...yuck) and the highlight of the season being a close loss to Boston College (who actually looks decent), it's easy for me to find 25 worthier teams at this juncture.

I was just very impressed with them so far, I think I dropped them 5 spots. Granted, losing to Princeton is not a good look, if they lose again they will be rightfully punished.

I might be reading too far into FAMU's showing against USF (actually outgained them and had it to a one-score game in the 4th), which is looking pretty good after USF has shown to be not as incompetent as most thought they'd be in the preseason.

massey massey massey….we have a bye week, sela (who we beat the previous week) wins their game. Sela moves up 10 spots and over us. Thats some Missouri valley math going on.

whats gonna be awesome is if UIW loses a conference game and comes in 2nd. Southland champ gets an autobid, uiw gets an at large, and one of the teams from mvfc gets bumped.

Naw, not us. No run defense. South Dakota figured that out in the 2nd half. Next year for us, unless we get portalled again.

Nicholls has been playing good after a pretty brutal early schedule.

In looking at the score and box score, the HC offense (Sluka) looked like they had a good day.

But they scored only seven points in the first half, got down 21-7, and that changed the entire game (obviously).
