This week's poll article: https://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-5-top-25-results-5/

I'm disappointed to see the soft landings for NDSU, Holy Cross, and William & Mary as all are above the teams that beat them. It's a little early in the season to discount head-to-head that much. I'm also not sure what UT-Martin keeps doing to move up so much. I know the last couple weeks have been crazy in terms of upsets but they've gone from #23 two weeks ago to #11 this week by beating North Alabama and Tennessee St. I see a good number of teams below them in the consensus that have been more impressive IMO.

Just not sure how NDSU is in the Top 10 still?

I'll be the first to admit I overreacted on the Elon vote but if we all thought HC was a Top 5 team, after how Harvard had their way with HC, they are easily a top 15 team IMO.

William & Mary should not be ranked. Only one of their results this year resembled a top 25 team. Without Bronson Yoder, they are mediocre in an awful conference.

South Dakota has earned a top 10 ranking until proven otherwise. No debut is too high.

Harvard is undefeated. They won on the road. Even if Brown wasn't pretty, it was a warm up game. They are ahead of Holy Cross for me, despite the hype.

NC Central should barely be ranked, if at all. As proven, they would be in the middle of a terrible CAA.

And seriously - Montana?!

Usually the AGS poll make more drastic changes before me. Seems to be lagging.

Overall, I like what y'all have cumulatively put together here. Even as a Big Sky fan, I just can't understand the love for Weber and Montana.

I agree with Chalupa on the most significant loss being Holy Cross just because they have less opportunities remaining to work their way back into a crucial top-8 seed. Holy Cross currently only has Fordham, who received one 25th place vote, as remaining opponents that are ranked/ORV (a 5-1 Lafayette may work their way into the discussion with a win next week over Princeton, but would likely depend on what else happens the weekends of 10/7 and 10/14). The Bison still have @UND (#16), @SDSU (#1, obviously), vs SIU (#5) and @UNI (#32) so they are still in control of their own destiny as far as getting a bye and home game(s) in the playoffs.

That's a fair criticism. I struggled to figure out who to put in those last few spots and decided to throw W&M a bone based mainly off of their 4-1 record and last year's solid season. I still didn't like Elon as a top 25 team but I probably should've left W&M out as well in that case. W&M being 9 spots above Elon in the consensus though is just baffling. At least Harvard and South Dakota got relatively close to the teams they beat.

You forgot the biggest one left -- at Army on Veterans weekend.

If Army can get to bowl eligibility, an HC win over them would be massive to inching their way back to a seed.

Funny enough though, I'm not even sure if a seed would be best. Last season, we'd have been better off being unseeded and not having to have gone to Brookings in the quarters. Do we want the eight seed again only to have to go to SDSU for the third time since 2021?

This reasoning sounds much better than mine: NDSU dropped 10 spots and HC 11 spots in my poll so HC was most significant!

Didn't forget. I just never count on a team beating an FBS, unless it's NDSU, since they have a pretty good record against FBS teams. If HC runs the table, including Army, regardless of whether Fordham and Lafayette end up being ranked/quality wins, I would bet HC gets a top 8 seed. A lot would still depend on how the season played out (i.e. Harvard continues to play well and Army not being a 2-win team), but 9-2 with a close FBS loss, a loss to a top-15 Harvard and a win over Army looks like a potential top-8. There's still some cannibalizing to happen among the top 10ish (MSU plays Idaho and Sac, SDSU-NSDU-SIU all still play each other, USD has SDSU, SIU and UND, WCU-Furman) so some of them will not be getting seeds.

Edit: Your point of the #8 seed not being particularly valuable is well-taken. xlolx But... you never know if a team is going to slip up. @SIU, @ USD, vs. NDSU is a gauntlet that will be tough to run through unscathed.

Many differences in WHERE I have teams vs. the collective, but 39 of the 40 listed are in my top 40 (that's how deep I typically rank teams for tracking purposes). My 37 is out and the poll's 39 wasn't in my 40.

As for Harvard and Holy Cross, the "anti-Ivy" bias is pretty prevalent among AGS voters. Case in point, coming into the Holy Cross game, Harvard was #37 on here but #24 in the STATS poll. So that would be a large chasm for the Crimson to make up via the head-to-head as we came in at AGS #4 / STATS #5. I don't totally disagree with you with regard to the "soft landing", and I'm surprised to see HC at 12 as opposed to somewhere in the 16-21 range.

There is absolutely no reason Holy Cross should be ranked higher than Albany for what it's worth. I could say the same about Harvard but it always seems like the Ivies have an artificial glass ceiling both in the AGS poll and the official FCS polls due to the fact that they don't go to the postseason, never play against any of the true FCS blue-bloods, and very rarely face FBS opponents.

Voters that are ranking Incarnate Word in the top 5 or so (or any voter for that matter), what are you seeing in them to have them ranked where you do? Not trying to criticize and jump all over you, I'm legitimately curious. Much like PWO said last week, I really don't know how to rank them. I feel there are many other teams that could have the exact same schedule with the exact same results and they would barely sniff the top 25.

I mean... Central Arkansas is literally sniffing the top 25 with an eerily similar schedule. Both have a 14pt FBS loss, one to UTEP, the other to Ok. State. Both played a Bishop Sycamore-esque team (North American University and Texas College). Both played ACU, with Word winning by 7 on the road and UCA cruising to a 35pt victory at home. UIW beat up on NoCo by 35 (for extra context NoCo lost by 20 to ACU) while UCA beat an SUU team that is better than its record (3 losses by a combined 7 pts to FBS Arizona State, ranked UC-Davis and sniffing-top-25 UCA along with a 20pt W over MVFC doormat WIU). The big difference is UCA's extra game, getting shellacked by NDSU in Fargo, while LAST YEAR'S UIW only lost by 3 in the semifinals.

UIW 14pt loss to UTEP<UCA 14pt loss to OK State
UIW whooping NoCo=UCA 2pt road win over SUU (this one could edge slightly to UIW, but NoCo<<<SUU, IMO)
UIW 7pt road win over ACU<<<UCA 35pt home beatdown over ACU
UIW vs N. Amer. Univ. and UCA vs. Texas College.... who f'ing cares. This tells nothing.
UIW close loss to NDSU LAST YEAR>UCA getting crushed THIS YEAR

So... looking at this.... UIW and UCA are pretty close in the rankings, I assume? (checks poll... UIW 911pts, UCA 119pts) Guys, the answer is clear... someone's dyslexia transposed UCA's points!

I don't have UIW at #5, but I do have them higher than I probably should, especially since I think that UCA is a fringe top 25. Thanks for this analysis. UIW is one of the teams that has definitely benefitted from their end last season and no FCS loss this season.

MSUBobcat, I may have missed this, but are you a voter? Just didn't see any poll posted. Not saying at all that non-voters shouldn't provide input, because they definitely should. Was just curious about your take on this weekend's shifting and where to place previously ORV teams with respect to the teams they beat, as well as how to place those teams that were beaten with respect to one another. I'm going to post my poll shortly (minus the commentary this week), and I'll shut up and listen. ;)

This reasoning sounds much better than mine: NDSU dropped 10 spots and HC 11 spots in my poll so HC was most significant!

I went with William & Mary, because now they have a similar road to Holy Cross in that they will have a difficult time playing their way back into contention for a seed. They play an FBS (albeit a winless FBS), and their other best remaining opponent is Albany (no Delaware, no Villanova, no New Hampshire, no Rhode Island). While one could look at this and say they could run the table and have a nice little record, if there is any scrutiny of SOS in the CAA conference schedule, they could be a 9-2 or 8-3 team nearing the bubble. Based on last weekend, I am not sure they will even get to 9-2 or 8-3, but who knows?

19: Mercer Bears (19)

This is an outrage!

No one at AGS should be allowed to consider Mercer's resume objectively.

The Bears 2 Losses were both blowouts (just ignore the Furman Box Score - a 3 point game with 15:54 to play) to terrible Teams (just ignore their Top 5 FCS and Top 20 FBS Ranking) and each of Mercer's 3 Double-Digit Wins (by an average of ~24 points) was so bad, they should be called Losses.

Get with the program, PWO!

After everyone talked last Sunday about how hard it was after about #16, I started a mock poll beginning with the Week 4 poll and I just posted my dart-throwing on that thread (https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?340247-AGS-Poll-Results-2023-Wk4/page13)last night, to which C-Hen immediately and ruthlessly tore to shreds xbawlingx Okay, he only questioned my inclusion of FAMU, especially with the lack of NCCU, but I'm very sensitive.

I inquired about starting back up on the poll on a thread yesterday, but don't think I got a response on how to submit it. I have my mock poll for Week 5 at home that I can post later. I feel less good about Week 5 than I did about Week 4, and Week 4 was a ****show. This week I got to maybe 12 before I went.... I dunno where to put these teams in relation to each other. So.... more dart throwing. And C-Hen is going to destroy my last shred of self-confidence over it.

Voters that are ranking Incarnate Word in the top 5 or so (or any voter for that matter), what are you seeing in them to have them ranked where you do? Not trying to criticize and jump all over you, I'm legitimately curious. Much like PWO said last week, I really don't know how to rank them. I feel there are many other teams that could have the exact same schedule with the exact same results and they would barely sniff the top 25.

well, Im going strictly off last season and their recruits they brought in.

SDSU plays western Oregon and Drake and not a peep.
Mt st has utah tech and stetson

Its an AGS fact that the big sky and mvfc can get away with those schedules, then also beat each other up in conference without suffering the consequences. Any other conference? No chance
(and yes, the Southland is very bad this year)….Im talking year end year out, other fcs conferences are the red headed step children. And, that purple conference has some pretty good ball being played with Tarelton, UCA, fricking sfa, and AP.

Anyways, why am I ranking uiw high? Coming off a good season and they are winning. They will more than likely go undefeated (altho ….if Nicholls gets rolling…theyve had a pretty tuff schedule)

And while Im on my soapbox……

please explain Weber St?? 2 of their 3 wins over central wash and a come from behind miracle against one of the worst fcs teams, add to that a 40-0 loss. No other team in the nation outside of the bs or mv would even get a vote, much less be ranked

I'm not trying to bash their schedule. They've played tougher teams in past years and I'm guessing given other teams' open dates it's the best they could do for this year. Evaluating them right now is tough because they've only played 2 FCS games, one good and one so-so. And they were expected to blow out the FBS team they played and they lost by 2 TD's. This years results aren't necessarily bad, but so far those results don't seem as good as last years. I can honestly see them being ranked anywhere from 9 to about 20.

Harvard ranked…. Nice but it would be hard not too. Harvard wins Patriot league title and would be serious threat to win CAA. Harvard will now slowly drop in poll as they commence the no playoffs schedule

I’ve had an eye on Austin Peay and I ranked them last week by the way

Still really don’t understand why Florida A&M is ranked, who have they ever beat and why are they over NC Central? The MEAC champs beat Jackson St how many times? MEAC champ > SWAC champ … that comment is for everyone not directed at you

EKU too high is a comment directed at you

Everyone has their biases, I guess.

Has a team that advanced deep into the playoffs ever lost to a SWAC team during the regular season?

And I imagine the year that Maine made it to the FCS semis (2018 or '19) but also lost to Yale (4th place in the Ivy) during the regular season, you left them out of your poll completely despite the postseason run? Just wondering what Holy Cross would have to do to get back on board with you. Is it a 1 week penalty, or an Ivy loss means you're done for the season kind of rule?

NDSU - has plenty of opportunities to move their way up into the top 4. If not, they'll continue to drop. I'll hedge my bets and say they end up in 5-10 with 2 or 3 losses....
Holy Cross - I have not been overly impressed with the Crusaders relative to their expectations but I kept them in the top 5 because I believe in Chesney. They have 3 solid to good games with Army, Fordham and Lafayette left. Fordham is still good; losing in befuddling ways is their trademark under Conlin. That will be a battle in the Bronx. Lafayette has dudes. They legitimately hung with a tough as nails Duke team before the refs just started making stuff up which stole their soul. This is the best 'Pards teams in 14 years. If they win at Princeton I'll likely have them in the 20-25 range next week.
W&M - They were flaky from the start which is why they were trending towards the tail-end of my Top 10. I see two, maybe 3 more losses for the Tribe....
YSU - Showed no defense against UNI after hanging tough with Ohio State all things considered. Beat SIU and they'll just jump nearly as far as they fell...

After a fairly quiet September my poll definitely needed to be re-calibrated. I expect probably two more weeks where things get a little chaotic. The ebbs and flows of the season suggest 2-3 losses is to be expected from "most". Someone is due to go on a run that is unseen right now while someone else will be the next SELA....

I only vote in the final poll each year, just because I don't have the time to research all the Top 40-ish FCS teams every week. Between all the pick'em's and fantasy football, it's too much. But I guess I'll keep one "rule" for my one and only poll of 2023 (really January 2024) -- if Holy Cross somehow wins the national championship and Harvard finishes 10-0, I will rank Harvard #1 and Holy Cross #2. That's my pledge.

The next 2 weeks on the road will tell us more about NDSU. I originally had them at 8. Now around 15.

Everybody was waiting for an opportunity to punish William & Mary and they got it, but I keep remembering how much trouble Delaware has playing at Elon and how good the W&M defense is…. I don’t see them losing 2 or 3 more games even without Yoder

Who do you think they are losing to?
You spelled “properly assess” wrong.

and you didn’t read the comments about dropping them completely out of the poll… didn’t I read that on here? Losing 2 or 3 more games? Does Virginia count as one?

I knew they weren’t right when they didn’t pound Wofford by even more and had to settle for FGs on several drives, but in todays FCS with that Defense, there probably getting punished more so than properly assessed

I know the running joke for years is UNI has the worst offense in the FCS but this isn't the same old UNI and hasn't been for 2 seasons now. Averaging over 400 yards per game.

Yes, only 9 scored agaisnt Iowa State but 2 TOs inside the redzone in that game took 14 off the board. Still outgained Iowa State on the day

17 points against WSU but it turns out turning the ball over 6 times will limit point total. Averaged close to 6 yards per play on offense

530 yards against Idaho State and called the dogs off at half

Theo is over 300 yards per game passing - let's not act like YSU gave up a ton of yards and was embarassed by a dog **** offense.

I was pretty equitable when it came to dinging NDSU, Holy Cross, W&M and YSU. I dropped NDSU from #2 to #15, Holy Cross from #4 to #20, W&M from #9 to #22, Youngstown State from #12 to UR..

I'll be surprised if W&M does better than 2-2 in their next 4 (@ Virginia, Towson, Monmouth, @ Albany). After Hampton, they conclude the season with a big time rivalry game against Richmond.

I was banking on the 'Guins defense being a top-tier FCS unit this year capable of shutting down quality offenses in the MVFC. That is why I prefaced the comment with YSU's performance against Ohio State.

Must say as a Delaware fan I'm not convinced the Hens are 6 just yet, but things are moving the right way for sure

Beat a just horrible Stony Brook team and St Francis was not much better
UNH was a big win, but some of the luster of that win has come off seeing Towson expose the UNH D

Having a bye was very advantageous this past week.

Yoder's absence was not the problem at Elon. W&M rushed for 307 yards. The guy we needed to step up was Martin Lucas and he did gaining 95 yards on 13 carries. In the end the issues were lack of passing offense and turnovers. We missed WRs DreSean Kendrick and Hollis Mathis who were both out. We'll need to find a better passing game or the season is a question mark. Even with a terrific defense if teams only need 14 points to beat us it could be a tough road.

and I would just add to this I didn’t see an answer from Lehigh TU on the 3 games you would be losing

Virginia likely one but after that…
