Furman pulled off a steal.

CB Jaylen Moson was a surprise to us Furman fans.
Moson is a 3-star CB from Kennesaw, GA
Originally committed to Tulsa.
Held over 20 offers. Mostly FBS; Tulsa, GSU, ODU, JakSt, UCF, GaSt, AFA, JMU, Liberty, MTSU, Buffalo, GaTech, ArkSt, FAU, Army, Akron.

Another surprise… Furman picks up Army Prep transfer Marc Hernández. Hernández is a 6-4 310 NG from Texas, Furman recruited him hard in HS. NG was the only position not returning a starter in 2023.

Last note on Furman's Feb. signings.
I would call this one a sleeper…

Hysan Dalton was the #4 DB for the 2022 Buford HS team.
In case you aren't aware of Buford HS football, they're a juggernaut in Georgia HS football.
They've won 17 state championships, including the 22 title at 7A.
The top two corners on the 22 team signed with Alabama and Pitt.
Dalton went to Fork Union Prep this year.

Dalton is a long, 6-2 corner than runs an officially timed 4:48 - 40.
Choose Furman over Coastal Carolina, and Marshall.
Dalton could be the diamond of this class.

One of the side effects of the transfer portal is the plethora of quality high school players available in the talent pool—at least in Louisiana. We all knew high school kids would be impacted, but it's shocking the numbers of quality kids available—almost like the era before the advent of internet and social media when small schools could easily find hidden gems. Time will tell how they pan out but this is the most upside/talented high school class we've ever signed.

"expected" to sign. Those that don't are likely to find scholarship 2023 offers harder to find. I suppose this wouldn't be an issue at Georgetown, so best of luck picking through the leftovers.

Make it at least 41 with three more JUCOs, going to more than that when all is said and done, major overhaul on the roster with all the graduates and portal losses.

DB: DYLAN TOOKER 5-10; 195 (Bakersfield College)
DB: TREY EDWARDS III 6-0; 180 (Long Beach City College)
OL: JACK BACON 6-6; 280 (Cabrillo College)

Saw that kind of ‘roster churn’ in the SoCon last year with WCU, CIT, Mercer, and Samford gaining and losing 40-60+ Players from the prior year roster. That churn in SoCon seems to be way down this year, but won’t really know until comparing July/August 2023 Rosters to 2022 rosters.

The Georgetown class appears very weak. A big, big step back for a 2-9 team.

Here is the link explaining yesterday's 10 signings combined with 17 from the first class.
Definitely one of the largest classes some of the LB's and DL sound good. Thinking most of the Maine kids are PWO's. Only got two transfer portal FBS players with limited playing time so that was a little dissapointing. If anyone has info on the ny/nj players which is always are largest recruiting area please feel free to share.

I saw your Senior Day presentations last season, I don't recall 27 graduating seniors. But maybe I had too many turns on the Shotsie board before the game. Also not too many in the portal. I'm also thinking a good part of your 27 must be PWO.
One very notable guy in the portal - QB Joe Fagnano! What's with that? He played well vs UNH and checking season stats he completed 208 of the 210 season pass completions. And one of the 2 "other" completions must have been a flea flicker against us - every other opponent seemed to complete one for a TD last season.

Delaware has 28 newcomers including 13 transfers. On paper, this is a big upgrade compared to what Hen fans have seen for a decade or so

https://baytobaynews.com/delaware/stories/delaware-football-signing-class-grows-to-28-players,100378 (https://baytobaynews.com/delaware/stories/delaware-football-signing-class-grows-to-28-players,100378)

“The Hens also signed Todd Williams, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound defensive lineman from Wakulla (Fla.). His father, also named Todd, played at Florida State and then in the NFL with the Titans, Buccaneers and Packers.
Another defensive line addition, Kion Wright, had verbally committed to Georgia Tech before they had a coaching change. The Cheltanham High, Pa. product reportedly had 21 Division I offers.
Carty said he won’t be surprised if Williams and Wright make an immediate impact.
“I mean, they’re different, as far the talent level of a freshman at the defensive end position,” said Carty.”

Not all that unusual these days. This may actually be well within ‘the new normal.’

As you can see below in this post from late July of 2022, FUBeAR tracked the ‘roster churn’ in the SoCon last year (except ETSU as their website roster format didn’t lend itself to easy analysis) and bringing in 31 new Players was well below the SoCon average of 45 (Column 5).

At this time, it seems this ‘churn’ may be significantly less in the SoCon this year, but we will need to wait until late July rosters are published to make a good year-over-year comparison.

…the numbers of departing players and the numbers of new players seem really high compared to what we perceive would have been these numbers in prior years. We’ll see if/how that affects what we see on the field AND if/how it affects how we feel about our Teams and our ongoing / continued support for them, specifically, and college football (particularly FCS), generally.

Towson, 2022, is a good example of this. They had 40+ college transfers on their roster. They were a much better team in the 2nd half of the season. There was plenty of talent there, but it took half of the season to have a functioning team. At least last season, focusing primarily on player development and retention, helped W&M and UNH end up on top of the conference standings.

Yup.

Bringing a player or two to fill holes is one thing. Packing half of the two deep with players who have never played together and expecting them to gel quickly, is something else entirely.

I would bet UIW has some serious talent in that class, I’ll roll with loading the bus now more so than ever as roster churn is here to stay

In Delaware example, Carty hit portal hard not only to fill immediate needs, but just to be competitive ... Danny Rocco, now banished to the gallows, left several talent gaps that Carty is trying to flip to the plus side

Last years strong Defense will be made up of only a few familiar faces, it was either hit the portal hard or get beat

FG kicker was a must, they got St Francis NE conf First teamer

2 more WRs including Ivy All conference Kym Wimberly, a native of Slidell, Louisiana. If healthy, he can be spectacular

QB Nolan Henderson is moving on, like Schmid at Sam Houston, he still had one year of eligibility but he’s suffered numerous injuries. Zach Marker, A JUCO QB from Central Iowa will compete with Ryan O’Connor for the starting job.

I'm sure, but the talent wasn't accessed through the portal. NDSU, SDSU, and MSU built from within. The Tribe had only six transfers on the roster and 3 were walk-ons. Furman also with only six transfers.

I suppose it'll take another two or three years to process the full impact of the new transfer rules, but we're taking the position of going heavy high school, develop, move them on in 2-3 years (if they're good enough and want to leave), rinse/repeat, and fill-in with targeted transfers as needed. One of the unintended consequences, at least in our state, is the alarming number of quality high school players with few or no offers. We're taking walk-ons who would have been scholarship offers a few years ago. While the days of a Cole Kelley or a Bryan Bennett falling in our lap are essentially over, we're finding we're on much better high school talent than we ever would have had access to in past years. Eventually the portal craze will soften as schools get burned by taking large numbers of other people's problems, but right now, the strength of the recruiting market for us is high school players.

We forget about the PWOs that also sign during this signing period. Cody Mauch proves there can be some diamonds to mine. Would love to know other FCS schools that prioritize PWOs? Since Clay Hendrix's arrival Furman has made PWOs a priority. Furman currently has nine committed/signed PWOs for this class. Most of these players had D2 offers and several had other FCS offers.

A couple that standout:

We forget about the PWOs that also sign during this signing period. Cody Mauch proves there can be some diamonds to mine. Would love to know other FCS schools that prioritize PWOs? Since Clay Hendrix's arrival Furman has made PWOs a priority. Furman currently has nine committed/signed PWOs for this class. Most of these players had D2 offers and several had other FCS offers.

A couple that standout:

W&M maintains a Walk-On Hall of Fame and has emphasized PWOs for decades. In 2022 we had six starters who came in as PWOs including two Captains and the CAA Def. ROY. Also have a scholarship fund specifically to reward walk-ons. HEYFARL (Hundred Each Year For A Rising Letterman)

Good stuff LK2 and this PWO talk matches up with what our recruiting gurus said on gohens. Basically that the quality of the PWOs this year was noticeably better, projected of course, to the PWOs Delaware has seen in the past.

And you mentioned something else, If some of these guys are as good as advertised, they might not be around very long... kind of like minor league baseball

Got a ways to go with that yet. For example, Furman will have over 90 Players in Spring Practice soon. Normally, that number is in the 60’s or 70’s. Lots of guys sticking around for their 5th and 6th years.

Remember…If players enrolled in 2020…

2020 - Free Covid Year
2021 - Possible Redshirt
2022 - Year 1 of eligibility
2023 - Year 2 of eligibility
2024 - Year 3 of eligibility
2025 - Year 4 of eligibility

Add medical ‘redshirts’ years in for some and it really won’t be until after 2026 that Covid is fully, fully out of the NCAA eligibility system.

UNH signs 4 making a total of 14. I know we have 2 PWO's. Not sure if there will be any more additions by the absolute deadline of April 1st

https://unhwildcats.com/news/2023/2/1/FBNSD2023.aspx

That closely matches the number of departing Seniors and Grad Students recognized at the last regular season home game.

No doubt extra COVID years have had a major impact on roster management and recruiting, but new transfer rules have gummed it up even more, making it easier for schools to go quick fix route, which in turn, leads to a vicious cycle. We'll see how it plays out.

We've gone relatively unscathed by the portal until this year. We lost two secondary guys to LSU (Zy Alexander) and Minnesota (Jack Henderson) respectively, a defensive end to Texas State (Bryce Cage) and a WR to Miami-OH (Gage Larvadain). The only one of the four who had offers coming out of high school was Bryce Cage. We were the only offer for Alexander, Henderson and Larvadain which not only speaks to our ability to identify and develop players, but also shows you can still find good high school value in today's internet/social media environment. There are even more bargain finds now than just two, three or four years ago when those kids came out of high school.

Instead of complaining about FBS schools raiding us, our coaches have taken the position that we'll go find the next wave, coach 'em up, develop them and use their "success" to go find the next wave, and so on. Some will decide to stick around 4-5 years, and that's great, but if we can get 2 to 3 solid years of contribution on the field, we're okay with it. Time will tell with this current class, but there's a good chance we'll be raided again in two to three years.

I still can't get over the number of quality players still out there looking for places to go. It's sad to be honest.

All total from the December signing and this signing the McNeese Cowboys signed 33, and it is a pretty even split between transfers (needed experience and bodies to bolster very low senior and junior class numbers) and high school seniors -- and several PWO's -- to fill the needs: https://mcneesesports.com/news/2023/2/1/football-rebuilding-a-champion-continues-for-cowboys-on-nsd-23.aspx

After hurricanes and four coaching changes in five years and many player defections, McNeese was playing with dangerously low numbers and lacked depth in 2022. It was pretty much next body up for most positions. Still, the Cowboys finished 4-7 and won their last three games in a row.

In a testament to this coaching staff, only a handful of players (and only one notable player) entered the transfer portal, and the coaching staff stayed intact except for one young coach who chose to leave the profession due to family considerations.
