Orangeburg, S.C. (Jan. 23, 2023) --- Visiting Delaware State used strong second half and overtime play to notch its first MEAC win since the 2020-21 season, defeating South Carolina State 88-85 at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Center this evening. The Hornets also snapped a 15-game skid to improve to 2-16 overall and 1-4 in the MEAC. Delaware State trailed by 13 points at the break, but outscored the Bulldogs 45-32 in the second half to force the extra period. The Hornets won the overtime 17-14. Khyrie Staten sealed the win by hitting two free throws with two seconds left in the extra session. South Carolina State missed a desperation three-point attempt at the final buzzer. Staten came off the bench to lead four double-figure scorers for the Hornets with 19 points, highlighted by eight-for-nine shooting at the free throw line. Brandon Stone, also coming off the bench, was seven-for-11 from the field and perfect on four free throws, to add 18 points for Delaware State. Martaz Robinson (17) and Jevin Muniz (16) also reached double-figure point totals in the contest for the Hornets. Delaware State trailed 63-51 after two SC State free throws with 9:34 left in regulation. The Hornets chipped away at the deficit over the next nine minutes, and tied the score at 71 when Stone hit two free throws with 21 seconds left in the second half. The Bulldogs missed the final shot in regulation to send the game to overtime. The Hornets scored the first six points in overtime, and pulled ahead 77-71 on a tip-in by Stone with 3:18 left to play. Delaware State held its biggest lead of the game, 81-73, on a shot in the lane by Raymond Somerville with 1:08 to go in overtime. South Carolina State pulled to within 86-85 on a three-pointer with seven seconds left to play before Staten's two free throws. The Hornets were four-for-five from the field (80%) and nine of 12 at the free throw line (75%) in overtime.
