Into the SLC and now it's football talk time in Corpus!
For 50 cents, this is what this consultant sees:
n To play football at the Division I-AA level, a school can offer up to 65 scholarships. Title IX requires that those scholarships be matched with women's programs. In the Southland, the Islanders could add a women's soccer program to join the rest of the league, but that's all that is missing among the women's sports offered at Texas A&M-CC and played by the Southland. So the Islanders would need to look to other sports not played in the Southland, such as swimming, lacrosse or equestrian. The problem is those sports would be in the same limbo as the current teams without a conference affiliation. Travel costs could also be large. The other option would be cutting a men's sport to help even the scholarships.
n Football is also the most expensive sport to play because of the cost of equipment, number of coaches, insurance and support staff. That cost would need to be matched on the women's side as well.
n A football team will need a stadium that can seat between 10,000-20,000 people. Such a stadium does not exist, so it will have to be built on land that will have to be purchased.
