View Full Version : 2022 Celebration Bowl: #26 North Carolina Central vs #13 Jackson State

Someone PM'd me pointing out that we should probably have a Celebration Bowl game thread also so starting this up.

This game features the regular season champs from the MEAC (North Carolina Central - #26 in the most recent AGS Poll) and SWAC (Jackson State - #13 in the most recent AGS Poll). It will will kick off on Saturday 12/17 at noon ET from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and will be televised nationally on ABC. Here's the team stats breakdown for the two teams with national FCS rank in each category in parentheses:

I'm looking forward to watching this game and I think it will be closer than the spread when I checked a couple days ago, -16.5 points Jackson State. It is hard to say how much Coach Sanders' announced departure will affect the outcome. He is going to be coaching, but there is another question concerning Sanders. He is recovering from surgery from a serious medical condition and has limited mobility.

NCCU has the offensive MEAC Player of Year in Davius Richard, as well as the Defensive Player of the Year, Kalil Baker. Baker is also a 1st Team AP All American at Defensive Back while QB Richard is the HBCU Impact Player of the year.

In addition to his son, QB Shedeur Sanders, one additional Jackson St. player, CB Travis Hunter has announced he'll be transferring to Colorado. Hunter was dealing with some injuries during the last part of the season. I don't expect that the fact that these guy will be at Colorado next season will have much effect in how they are used in this game. There are also 7 other guys in the transfer portal. No idea whether these 7 guys are available.

But…FUBeAR learned that Hunter was gonna change the landscape of college football and shift the balance of power from PWI’s to HBCU’s. How he gonna do that from Boulder?

Wonder if this rule expands to the Celebration Bowl. Seems to only affect FBS games after Dec 15, but damn many FCS teams could have used this for the playoffs. With only 63 scholarship players, everyone here knows how thin the roster gets this time of year.

A little help not sure on the rules but Players can say where they are playing next season and still play for current team? So like today Tommy Mellott could say he is going to enter the transfer portal and play for Colorado and have the COL head coach even say before he announces that he is his QB1??

Yeah, it was hard not to notice.

On the other side of the field NCCU got some really good play from a couple key players who looked pretty white: #54 had a good game at linebacker and TE #84 took the direct snap on the fake punt and ran it about 30 yards for a 1st down. That might have been the most important play of the game as it changed the momentum back towards central.

I know there is a lot of discussion, and controversy, at some HBCUs about integrating. Vice TV has an excellent show on this issue set at Morehouse College.

I've stayed away from getting into pissing contests about the NCCU vs UNH game primarily because the majority of disparaging comments made have just been trolling attempts. The comments have been equally insulting to NCCU and try to diminish their accomplishment of beating a team that infrequently loses in its own stadium.
But since the NCCU win over JSU in the Celebration Bowl seems to finally be a wake up call I'll delve in a bit deeper now. You're right C-Hen, NCCU was the better team on that night in September. They came in with a great game plan and jumped out to a quick 14 point lead on the strength of a great first drive and a UNH pick 6 thrown in their own end of the field. After that, the teams traded scores through the remainder of the game. The game ended with an 18 point spread and not 11 because HC Rick Santos refused to accept defeat at the point where the majority of coaches would have read the hand-writng on the wall, and he continued to call time outs in much the same way Bob Chesney did vs South Dakota State. Both games will forever look more lopsided than they actually were. Guys like Rick Santos and Bob Chesney are just built that way.

Could NCCU play competitively in the CAA - absolutely. Could they have gone 7-1 in the CAA as UNH did? In my opinion, probably not. They just don't have the experience playing a schedule that requires that degree of intensity week in and week out. That is why we don't see new conference members finish even .500 their first couple years in the CAA.

KPSUL -- totally agree. Some people tend to think that when a game is played, it's a game being played between two different conferences. It's not -- it's a game between two teams. Jackson State likely was a tad overrated but NC Central had a solid team this year, with one bad loss to defending MEAC champ SC State. I watched NC Central play one night in October b/c they were on ESPN2 against Morgan State on a Wednesday or Thursday night. Their offense would certainly be above average in the CAA.

Impressive that AGS got this one right with more votes for NCC than JSU to win the Celebration Bowl despite what I believe was a 13 point spread.

Personal attack me you have lost the discussion.
Just trying to be part of an intervention to help you kick that Prestone addiction along with your Furman obsession.

But you still didn’t answer. Was that 30 point NCCU loss to a Team that finished tied for last place in the Big South a good loss, as implied by the OP, who excluded it when discussing NCCU’s “one bad loss”?

You felt so compelled to involve yourself that you had to quote reply to FUBeAR’s on-topic responsive question to the OP, so you must have had a strong opinion on the question(s) posed within the post you quoted…or was it just yet another very weak & thinly veiled attempt at…let’s see…what did you call it….yeah….”a personal attack?”

Wow, great message from Deion that every player who feels they let the team down should hear. Much respect Coach Prime. xbowx

Good stuff. Not at all surprised.

*FUBeAR was joking about the “Code Red”…for some here who seem to have lost their senses of humor as the temperatures have dropped…or maybe it’s the cost of Xmas gifts this year that’s driving the sour mood.

I bet Coach Prime consoled Hagler after the game, that kid could be more famous for dropping the ball than he ever would’ve been for catching it... But one thing for sure he will never forget it

how did I know? Because Deion is smart and what he did right there tells me he is great father... fathers do this stuff all the time

The 2022 Celebration Bowl proves once again that dominating the SWAC is the equivalent of being competitive in the MEAC.

Especially when 6 of 11 starters on defense were missing and a few others on O did not suit up as well.

Quite a few 2nd teamers got a LOT of playing time in this game.

J-State wasn't missing 6 of 11 starters that's false. They were missing Evans and Gaddy from the starting defense. That's it!

Going by what I was told by a JSU alum: 2 along the DL front (outside of Gaddy in street clothes) and a mid-yr rotation of 2 DBs and 2 previously starting OL.

Yeah they lied. They weren't down that many guys at all.

Outside of a name here or there, I didn't keep up w/ their starting roster other than noting that the all-world WR Malachi ????? wasn't around and the emergence of a super talented WR named Dallas ????. I am a HUGE NGaddy fan so I understand why he didn't participate in the game (pending fbs txfer & nfl pick).

Was JSzu down 2 OL? 2 DTs? 2 DBs?

The exact number of Jackson State "starters" missing for the Celebration Bowl becoming a moot point at this juncture. There are currently 26 Jackson State players in the transfer portal. The more critical question will be how many two - deep players will be returning for next season.

Maybe a bunch of the Colorado players being chased off by Coach not-ready-for-Prime Time will show up in Mississippi next season.

Based on their appearance in that meeting room, FUBeAR thinks, if they show up in Mississippi next season, the only Team they are gonna help is the D3 Millsaps Majors…maybe.
