It’s fantastic to get national attention, shoot for a Walter Payton award, shoot for an Eddie Robinson award, shoot for a Great West title, and for head coach Craig Bohl to aim to build North Dakota State into a football force to be reckoned with for 2008 and beyond. But the playoffs, and a national championship, will have to wait for next year.

Eastern Kentucky needs only to win two of its final three games to clinch the OVC title. Montana has been ranked in the Top 25 for 129 consecutive weeks. How is this for a tough stretch to end the season? Illinois State faces four ranked teams over the final four weeks.

"CSN West: Who is Best in the West -- or Should We Say All of FCS -- This Year?"

Right now, the three top teams in FCS (at least according to the Sports Network and FCS Coaches Poll rankings) are from West of the Mississippi River, the traditional dividing line between the East and the West in the United States. And four of the top five in those polls plus the AGS Poll can make that claim. Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, Montana, and McNeese State remain undefeated and any of the four could really make claim to the top spot in all of FCS.

Eight weeks into the season, conference statistics reveal offensive playmakers in the Southern Conference tend to be seniors while underclassmen dominate in the Big South. That makes sense. The SoCon has played competitive football, and the last four weeks likely hold more of the same. Playing younger playmakers has to be a contributing factor in the Big South’s disappointing record against a stout non-conference schedule. Let’s go a little deeper into the numbers.

"Gridiron Power Index (GPI) Through 10/22/07, Northern Iowa No. 1"

The Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the hybrid ranking for FCS and top index indicator of at-large playoff selection has the University of Northern Iowa in the top spot for the fourth straight week. The FCS's largest league, the Colonial Athletic Association is the top ranked conference. The CAA has seven of their teams in the top 25; the Southern Conference placed five; the Gateway Football Conference placed four; the Big Sky and Great West Football Conference placed two each; the Ivy League, Ohio Valley Conference, Patriot League, Southland and Southwestern Athletic Conference placed one each.
