Not perfect but all in all poll seems decent

Jackson State isn’t a top 20 team, let alone Top 10. Holy Cross tied with Weber? What a joke.

Edit: didn’t even realize they still have UM over Idaho. Lol!

I'm hoping NC A&T curb stomps Campbell this weekend so we can get an idea of where Jackson State is. NC A&T isn't even ORV in ANY poll, even the ones voting for Lindenwood, St. Thomas, Merrimack, et al so IMO if NC A&T beats them by more than Jackson, that's proof that anything more than top 21-25 is a stretch.

Aggred ,,, and much better than the Coach's Poll ... not sure why that is even followed anymore, much less even done at FCS level. Those coaches are clueless and lazy, and there is zero accountabliity for bad or conference homer picks. And I wouldn't be the least surprised if Coach's have deals to to others favors with their votes to help prop up perception of strength of schedule for playoff bids.

AGS has the best poll, period. Then looking at above, STATS looks pretty good Though historically, it used to almost mirror the Coach's Poll I thought anyway ? After that I like using the Massey Composite as a quick objective gauge on how good a team is or for Strength of Schedule. Coach's Poll is useless .. regional popularity contest.

Coach’s Poll sucks and has forever. Hadn’t looked at Massey this year and it is rough right now. Jackson State is 7 over there. Holy Cross is at 4! No disrespect to the Crusaders, they’re legit! Probably a seeded team. But would they beat Bizon, Montana State, UIW? They certainly don’t have a better resume.

While HC wouldn’t be favored against NDSU on a neutral field, I actually think their resume may be a bit better. Certainly, HC’s best win (Buffalo) trumps NDSU’s best win (Youngstown?).

Agreed on both points .. Coache's Poll and HolyCross.

FYI ... Jackson St is 7th on Massey Composite of all 33 polls/ranking systems.

Massey Computer has them 18th. Sagarin Computer has them 26th. AGS has them 16th. I think they might be top 20 or 25 based on all of this and looking at their win quality/margins.

The composite is horrible. Some are from hobby algorithm creators. Just look at some of the ridiculous placement of some of the teams. Massey is fairly easy in allowing any Ranking site to be included. Most are passable, but a few are just silly. One of them has Penn at number 3. Another has Montana at 34. Another has RI at 60. While another has Harvard at 12. Merrimack is 102 in one and 15 in another! Holy jacked up algorithms Batman!

I wouldn't say it is horrible as a composite. Though agree there allow some horrible ranking systems included among their 33 polls/systems composite ... several clearly much worse and more biased than Coaches polls.

But I mainly like the composite as an objective (i.e. middle of road) and quick way to gauge other teams outside the usual Polls, even comparing the different rankings to gauge where I think a team falls. I prefer to not lean on solely Massey or Sagarin, though Massey makes it very easy to do different things w/ SOS. The problem with leaning on Massey is it tends to cluster conferences together too much by end of season ... that is, it becomes self-perpetuating late. So when MVFC was clearly the top conf before Big Sky emerged .. we would end up benefitting more than we should.

But it comes in handy later in season if I'm looking at ISUr playoff chances compared to someone else's playoff chances if we're both on the bubble nearing end of season ... I'll hop around the Composite or Massey to see how their SOS compares and look for their quality wins and losses vs bad wins or bad losses.

As I also said, by mid-season on, I think AGS does the best rankings. Then STATS. Then ..... pause for effect ... pause some more .... then the Coach's Polls. But they only rank about 35 teams, including ORVs. So I need something that ranks everyone somewhat objectively and that I can point to my source .. no source being ideal.

Hope that clarifies what I meant.

That's a great explanation. You nailed the conference bias. I've noticed that for years. And you are obviously correct about AGS being the best, by far. I guess the weight of those jacked up rankings gets evened out, but holy cow, some are bad. I like Massey itself for the SOS as well and the history it provides. It's great to see series records.

We're on same page .. its much better than having nothing to base our bad biased opinions on !!!
