We’re about 1/2way thru the season. Never too early to start thinking about Playoffs: Top 8 Seeds.

Here’s what Mr. Massey thinks…

Here's where Sagarin has the top 8 FCS teams ranked (numbers in parentheses are overall Sagarin ranking).

1. Montana (72)
2. North Dakota State (77)
3. Sacramento State (82)

5. Weber State (90)
6. Mercer (106)

So, unless FUBeAR is misreading these rankings … (or is misunderstanding Catholic org structures)… the primary difference in the Top 8 is that…

…Sagarin is Benedictine & Massey is Jesuit?

Yet UNH goes down -8 for winning a game vs SBU to contrast Fordham went +5 for beating Lehigh……. I don’t understand how this stuff works sometimes.

As far as the. 1-8 seeding, just too early for now.

I agree it's too early right now. I'll try to catch some FCS action this weekend. I haven't watched much so far this year. Yesterday, I was celebrating that Texas beatdown of Oklahoma. The broadcast quality for the Sam Houston home games has been abysmal.

Yeah but I know you know it isn't just this week's games. But the games that happened last week and the week before, etc . Fordham may have gone up for how all their other opponents did. NH moved down for the same reason. I'm certain that W Mich getting thumped by E Mich, after W. Mich thumped NH last week, cost a few of those spots. Good news is that is works in both directions.

Oh my little Fubby- As a man who spent enough a miserable existence reading scientific studies and trying to torture the data to say what I wanted it to say, I can spot the flaw in your logic from Johnson City. If you are going to rely on Mr. Massey to predict the top 8 in FCS, you must actually open the schedule for you little Cronic Bears and see what Mr. Massey has to say about their W-L Record. My Massey currently has them at 50% vs the Mocs, but he has the final score as the Mocs by 1...So, you think a Mercer team that is not going to win the conference (according to Mr Massey) is going to be seeded ahead of the team that beat them head to head and actually took the SoCon AQ? I'll give you a minute or two so you can spin this!!! And Go Mocs!

Mr. Massey thinks - present tense, certain. This is what Mr. Massey thinks today; the day FUBeAR started this thread. These are Mr. Massey’s Top 8 Teams.

As you know, the current virtual toss-up projection for the 10/22 contest between the Bears & Mocs very well may change after the ETSU @ Mercer & VMI @ Chattanooga games this weekend. Correspondingly, Mr. Massey’s Top 8 Teams may change as well.

If either or both of these do change, please feel free to update this thread accordingly.

In the interim…

…Mercer is Mr. Massey’s #8 Seed …

…and…

…Chattanooga will be hoping they don’t have to spend Thanksgiving weekend in New Hampshire…

…well, that’s only if the Mocs don’t quit before the season ends…”quit” with or without playing their final 1-3 games … as they’ve done the past 2 seasons.

I would think eventually, as the season moves on, that a CAA team breaks into one of the top 8 seeds. Likely will come in part from the intra conference games/attrition in the Big Sky and MV. Would be strange if not. Not sure it’s ever happened before.

Somehow…all 4 of those Teams will get wins in each of those games and they’ll all 4 be seeded with 10-1 records. Big Sky does some kind of Voodoo / Mind Masking on their records to make losses vanish. Happens every year.

Montana has Sac, Weber and MSU from Oct 22 to Nov 19, all road games (and Idaho and EWU at home). Sac still has @Weber and UM (and Davis and EWU). MSU has Weber and UM both at home. I only messed around with it for a minute or two, but I can't find a combo that at least one of the four doesn't end with 2 conference losses. MSU has the "easiest" route to the conference championship, as we have WSU and UM both at home and have already played Davis and EWU. Our other games are road games at NoCo, NAU and Poly which are all in the bottom 4 of the conference (ISU-o being the other bottom feeder).

There's 5 games among the top 4 of the Big Sky, so at least 1 team is guaranteed 2 losses. It's also entirely possible that Sac State & Montana State both finish 8-0 as their schedules are way more manageable, they don't have any back-to-backs against the other top 4 teams like Montana & Weber do. Weber has the toughest stretch of all, starting 10/22 they have @MSU then Montana & Sac State at home in 3 consecutive weekends.

Idaho’s only major challenge ahead looks like game @Sac State. If they win that, they would likely be 9-2, Big Sky champs and 9-0 vs FCS. If they lost at Sac, they would still likely be 8-3 and a playoff team.

Their remaining Big Sky games are Portland State, Sac State, Cal Davis, Eastern Washington and Idaho State.

nah - we need 10, 13, and 17 to move up some 1st.

That would be the real trick. Especially if Mercer were to remain #1, they would have beaten #10, #13, and #17.

For #10 to move up, they will have to beat #1, #13, and #17, and probably have to have a couple of losses by #'s ahead of them. Of course with these power rankings, once #10 beats #1, the sky is the limit, right? If #13 and #17 move up into top 8 consideration, that likely means only one SoCon team seeded, simply because they all have to play each other to finish the season (except for #13 and #17). You will get to see first hand what is poo-pooed on the forums with respect to the MVFC and cannibalization. Enjoy!

Best of luck going forward, and again, I hope this is the playoff seeding that occurs. No seeing SDSU for the upteenth time in the playoffs (here or there), no Big Sky teams coming or going. Traveling to exotic destinations and playing out-of-conference games that would never happen otherwise (assuming everyone holds up their end of the bargain, including #8). Perfect, just perfect. You have made my day.

Excuse me, I meant #9 sliding into #8’s DM’s. Of course, this would probably then be the year Deion decides they should be in the playoffs…

FUBeAR has only been your humble and honest reporter in this thread. All data presented has been sourced, with links provided.

If FUBeAR selected the 8 seeds, he would struggle to decide whether VMI, The Citadel, or Wofford would be the 1 unseeded SoCon Team.

1) These are Versus Sports Simulator’s Power Rankings; not FUBeAR’s.
2) And…the focus of this thread is Seeds, not Playoff Selections. That’s why there is a break after 8 Teams - 9 in this case because of JSU….the rest of the list are ‘contenders’ for Seeding per Versus Sports Simulator’s Power Rankings.

Try to focus.

In the hypothetical where UM loses to UI, Sac and Weber but beats MSU in the Brawl (rivalry game, so anything can happen), you'd give Montana the 8th seed over a 9-2 Idaho who has the H2H victory? Or you think Idaho drops a game to either EWU or Davis at home?

Interesting that their math shows the big SoCon Showdown with Mercer @ Chattanooga this Saturday as a #1 vs. #5 matchup.

More or less accurate than what humans, using their own internal ‘fuzzy math,’ have derived?

We're more special than you think we are.

I think everyone knows who your QB is. I was really rooting for you guys in the playoffs last year, especially against NDSU. Tough that for the second year in a row, a big ticket QB got hurt in the national championship game.

I think it's obvious that Montana State would be favored against Holy Cross, especially up in Bozeman. But as far as rankings, if you look at our schedule we do have a win against a team currently in first place in an FBS conference (Buffalo) and we're undefeated. But unlike the powers of the Big Sky and Missouri Valley Football Conference, there's no room for error when it comes to earning a seed out of the Patriot League. We have no choice but to go 11-0.

NEARLY. But that means they didn't lose......this kind of conversation NEVER happened 10 years ago when the griz were ALMOST losing to teams on the road. Pretty nonsensical argument if you ask me.

Apparently beating #5 Weber and their top 10 defense wasn't enough to draw some positive attention around here.....

Incarnate Word comes to Commerce, TX next week to face the D1/Southland newcomers, and I’m not sure Incarnate Word can gain much of anything there. If UIW wins they beat a team in transition, so no surprise there. Also, they won’t get much schedule help from a win over our boys.

But if they lose then they lose so much more than the game. TAMUC already beat Southeastern Louisiana, and Incarnate Word is the biggest challenge left on the schedule by far. A Lion win puts Commerce as heavy favorites for an undefeated conference crown.

Plus, that means UIW is 3rd in conference at best, and almost assuredly staring at road games if they make playoffs at that point.

I'm good with that list!

I'm good with that list!

Really? So Mercer IS three spots better than Chattanooga then?

FUBeAR, I’d take that seeding as well (assuming Jackson State is not participating). The rankings suck, but the seeding…excellent.

That game got a lot of attention....for other reasons. A win is a win though, and that was a very good one.

UIW will win out and be a top 8 seed.

Do I think Mercer is three spots better, but I do think they are a playoff worthy team, and if you offered me a #5 seed today, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Not one CAA team. That’s rich.

Do we believe that a two-loss (that's FCS losses) CAA team automatically puts them out of contention for a seed?

If so, that leaves five teams in the discussion:

W&M
Delaware
URI
Richmond
UNH

Even if UNH were to win out (while they'd receive the CAA at-large), no way are they getting a seed with the loss to NC Central and their only OOC win coming against Dartmouth.

W&M and UD, if either finishes 10-1, are absolutely receiving a top 8 seed. They both have tough roads over the next month.

URI is an interesting study. At 9-2 with losses to UD and Pitt, would they sneak in to that final seed? Don't think so, mostly because their only two OOC wins are Brown and Bryant.

Richmond is in a similar spot to URI. Matching 5-2 (3-1) records with one of their losses coming against an FBS team (UVA). Winning out could mean a seed for them, but -- just like URI -- their OOC wins just aren't very strong (Lehigh and St. Francis), so think they'd still be on the outside.

So, I've convinced myself that UD and W&M are the only two teams that have a shot at a seed.

Despite UDDan's explanation that Herder projects future games when doing this I doubt we see three Big Sky teams seeded in the top 5 by the time it all shakes out. As I said on GoHens, if W&M and Delaware finish 10-1 at least one will be seeded.

Right on the fringe, IMO. At 11-0, HC is getting a seed. Sorry. It’s a shame that the PL is just so damn bad outside of Fordham that it’s difficult to compile better wins and not have the SOS where it is (especially because HC has played a decent OOC schedule).

For what it’s worth, the Buffalo win is going to be the best FBS win an FCS team has this season. That needs to count for something.

Holy Cross is most definitely a seed if they go 11-0. The Buffalo win is good, and the Fordham, Yale, Harvard wins are all solids wins too. Even the Merrimack win is decent. Probably a 7 but I wouldn't be surprised if they were #6. HC had a pretty good schedule for this years team, about the only way it would've been better is if they replaced one of the Ivy's with a CAA team like Villanova, Rhode Island, New Hampshire.

According to this ranking My Mocs are at 13..12 if you eliminate the JSU Primes...They need 4 slots to get a seed. They beat number 14 two weeks ago and lost by 4 AT #11 last week without the leagues best RB and with some questionable calls (targeting that took away an interception on the 25 yard line that the NCAA later ruled WAS NOT targeting abd reinstated the Mocs Starting Mike LB)...so with three games left, including one with number 8, and looking at the top 10 eating each other....If the Mocs win out, can they back into a seed?

If Mercer wins out they will have one loss to #13 and wins over #11 and #8....does that get a seed? It should! And Furman would win out they would have a loss to #8 and wins over #13 an #14...SoCon gets a Seed This year!!!! Id love to see the Mocs and Furman or Mercer win out...That would put the SoCon barking at two potential seeds!!!CRAZY!!!!!

Yep - with FU having the D2 win, ‘they’ would use that to keep 2 SoCon Teams from having seeds, but if Chattanooga and Mercer win out, they both should get seeds…in a just and righteous world.

But… they won’t.

They would both certainly be in discussion for seeds, and may very well both get seeded, but way too many other variables to say they SHOULD both get seeded.

For instance....if SDSU, NDSU, Montana State, Weber State, & Sac State all win out (outside of Sac losing to Weber) they will all be locks to be seeded, which would leave 3 available.

And if the following teams all win out you would have 10-1 Incarnate Word, 11-0 Holy Cross, & 10-1 William & Mary or 9-2 Richmond (whoever wins the season finale) in the mix for seeds as well. Between those 3 teams and Chattanooga & Mercer from the scenario in your post, 2 very good teams are going to be playing Thanksgiving weekend.

UIW lost to unranked 5-3 SELA.
W&M lost to barely ranked 6-3 Elon.
Richmond also lost to barely ranked 6-3 Elon and has beaten nobody.….and at least 3 of your “locks” wouldn’t have any better resumes than 9-2 Chatt & 9-2 Mercer, once the subjective bias is extracted, in this scenario.

But…you’re right.

If Mercer & Chatt win out, the Committee will, undoubtedly, screw Mercer (due to H2H loss to Chatt) and probably Chatt also.

William & Mary's loss to an Elon team that also beat Richmond & Delaware and that's practically a lock for the playoffs (as long as the Phoenix don't forget what times their games against Albany & Hampton are) is that bad in your book? The Tribe would also have beaten an FBS team (albeit a bad one) by 3 scores, beat likely playoff participant Delaware, & depending how the rest of the season shakes out would have victories over potential playoff teams Rhode Island, Richmond, & Campbell. I'm not saying that their resume would be objectively better than Chatty or Mercer, but in no way can you say that either of the SoCon teams' resumes are objectively better than the Tribe's either.

If it's Richmond that wins out instead of W&M, they would be 9-1 against FCS with wins against playoff teams Delaware & William & Mary, along with their lone loss being a road loss in double OT to an Elon team that is 99.9% going to be in the playoffs. As I said with William & Mary, you can't say the Spiders' resume is objectively better or worse than one or either of the SoCon teams.

Incarnate Word's resume looks like it would be the weak given the way Southern Illinois has fallen off the last couple weeks but given where they are in the polls right now they are very much going to be in the mix for a seed, and the committee isn't going to view their lone loss to SLU (8-1 against FCS competition assuming they also win out) as harshly as you do.

As is the case every single year after a consensus 5-6 teams are seeded, there are another 6 or so teams that are worthy of consideration for one of the final 2-3 seeds. This year will be no different, and 3 things can happen regarding the SoCon teams: 1) neither of them will be seeded, 2) 1 and only 1 of them will be seeded, or 3) they'll both be seeded. I'm not saying which of these should happen, but that you can't come to the conclusion that anything other than #3 happening means your team(s) got screwed. The two SoCon teams would be compared with at least 3 other teams who all have comparable resumes to each other for only 2 or 3 seed spots, and at least 3 of them will have to play Thanksgiving weekend.

You’re pretty good at spendin’ other people’s money, aren’t ya, Mr. Chicken?

Travel to / from the Upstate of South Carolina to Utah (if that’s even a real place) sure ain’t chicken feed. The D2 Furman played is located 14 miles from Paladin Stadium, about the same distance as Delaware’s average Away game.

Massey rates 35 lower division Teams ahead of Utah Tech. Maybe the Playoff Selection Committee needs to stop being tone-deaf to the economic realities of FCS Football and do their job by evaluating Teams’ strength of schedules based on actual strength of schedule instead of an arbitrary alphanumeric assignation.

Cluck the Playoff Selection Committee and their clucking lazy stupidity.

If/When (and still a bunch of games to hash it out) Chattanooga and Mercer win out, you'd have two 9-2 teams with losses to top 15 FBS programs and top 15 FCS programs...and atleast two wins against top 25 FCS programs...and both have a sagarin SOS in the 160-190 range just like everybody else mentioned...That is a difficult resume to deny a seed to...however the committee will probably see SoCon beside their name and instantly write them off.

Mercer lost to Auburn. Not a horrible showing, but Auburn is so far out of the top 15 that it isn't even close. The Illinois loss by Chattanooga, which everyone seemed to ridicule at the time, looks a lot better as the weeks passed.

You are correct sir...my fault, I was combining Furman and MErcer and maybe a little Samford....so I was thinking UGA or Clemspn....but Like you say, a loss to any SEC team (Sans Vandy) shouldn't be a blemish on any FCS school's record.

For argument’s sake, let’s say Weber loses this game to Sac St and wins their next two to finish 9-2.

Do they get a seed above 11-0 Holy Cross?

I can’t help but go through all of the scenarios in which HC could be looking at a top four seed.
