To beat SFA...

SHSU must get the run going -- had a huge running game against NWST. SFA gave up 447 rushing yards compared to having 0 (on 14 attempts) for themselves against TXST. SHSU has capable backs in Poullard and Robinson with a fast QB in Bomar.

Hold SFA on 3rd down -- no question Jeremy Moses is a very good QB and he's got several years to put up tons of yardage through the air. SHSU has struggled on 3rd down throughout the season and had a great game against NWST in this area. Kats need to keep it up as Moses has the arm and receivers to take care of business.

AXE THE JACKS -- Kats need to come out with the mentality that they typically do against SFA. They know this is the biggest game to their alum and student base. They need to be ready to lay down the hits and get the large Kat base that makes the trip behind them early and often. More importantly, they need to stay out of trouble -- no postgame antics and of course, limit the unnecessary penalties (no personal fouls, game misconducts, etc)...

While SFA's 52-29 loss to Texas State in San Marcos didn't catch me totally by surprise, I must admit I thought it was a game that the Lumberjacks would show much better.

The team seemed to have found its offensive stride and put up a good defensive effort last week against Nicholls State in a 17-16 loss.

With a road trip on the schedule against a 1-5 Texas State team that has a defense that can't catch a cold, I was anticipating a big offensive performance and a defensive stand that would produce SFA's first victory in seven tries.

But instead, I found myself flipping through an SFA media guide after the setback, looking for the last time a team has gone through a season without a win.

This rivalry is one of the best in college football. The stands may not be absolutely packed...but the atmosphere and tension is fantastic.

I'm graduating in a month...and I'm going to make it a point to try and see this game every single year.
