This week's poll article: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-4-top-25-results-4/

It's a little disappointing to see Elon ranked one spot below William & Mary in the consensus (that's STATS/Coaches poll type stuff people). Same could be said for SIU over SEMO. Head-to-head should be weighted pretty strongly this early in the season IMO. Although I was ok with Incarnate Word over SLU based on how tight that game was and the fact that UIW has some really good wins to fall back on.

Surprised Fordham is so low…not even that close to cracking the 25.

Nice showing in Athens…they all but had that win and pissed it away.

But what’s really noteworthy is going on the road to beat Monmouth. A win that looks pretty good now.

I dropped Nova out of my poll completely, but I've been lower on them then everyone else all year. I had them at 13 last week. Their two victories are both unimpressive and haven't shown much either in their two losses for me to give them any benefit of the doubt.

Good team, but with such a soft, mostly insulated schedule they really shouldn't be anywhere above 16-20.

I think that if "good wins to fall back on" applies, then SIU over SEMO seems about right (this is not what I did, but SIU did beat FBS Northwestern).

Seems like either lean into it, or don't, but perhaps a bit unfair to criticize this poll with the "good wins to fall back on" point when you were OK making an exception to it. I know the "but the SEMO win over SIU was at Carbondale" or "UIW lost on the road to SLU" can enter into play", but then the discussion can be how much does H2H weigh in vs. home/road? Or even better, if they played 10 times, team X would win Y games (probably not the best strategy to take, but I guess if UIW played SLU 10 times, they would win...more?).

BTW, I do agree with you that H2H should have a lot of significance at this point, and I think right now that Elon>W&M (and Elon beat the Tribe at their house), SEMO>SIU (again, beat the Salukis at their house), and SLU>UIW (win @ home, but cannot help it they had TWO FBS losses and one dominating performance against a poor CCSU team...their schedule is what it is), but we'll see how it ultimately plays out.

Zero votes for Idaho? Zero? I'm surprised.

I am too. With the discussion in How They Fared, I had already inserted them into the list of teams (not necessarily Top 25, but in the list). Obviously, I did not vote for them in the Top 25, but the consensus is that everybody thought they did not belong in the Top 25...perhaps this is the first time every AGS voter agreed on anything.

That's a good point and SEMO did score the go-ahead TD with 11 seconds to play so it's not like that game proved there was much separation between the two. To be fair I have SIU one spot below SEMO and W&M one spot below Elon so these are some pretty minor gripes from me in the grand scheme. I would also guess that in the case of W&M and Elon the difference in the consensus probably comes from voters who didn't want to move W&M all the way out of their top 25 but still left Elon off. At least from the ballots posted so far everyone who had both Elon and W&M ranked had Elon ahead of W&M.

If you are talking about the teams I think you’re talking about. Team A’s one loss was by 4 to a team every other fcs school would have likely been crushed by. Team B beat the common opponent by 3 more points. Team A was up by 14 with a couple minutes left in the game when the third string rb fumbled leading to a touchdown onside kick and touchdown. Both games were close with the common opponent having a chance to win down he stretch. Team A also just beat a top 5 team on the road by two scores.

I don't think UM would be crushed by Arizona. They're better on both sides of the ball than the team that beat UW last year (I realize their record was awful, but most of their losses were by a TD or less). That being said, they'll have their chance to prove they should be #1 if they can get road wins in Sacramento and Ogden.

They still have 2 big wins, which is more than most anyone else has.

I believe nevadagriz was comparing SDSU & Weber State along with their common opponent in UC Davis, not NDSU & Montana along with their common opponent in USD. I know that’s who atthhewbon was comparing.

I don’t think any of the top 7-8 teams get crushed by Iowa and are as competitive as the Jacks were.

I was comparing Montana and NDSU. Ndsu was favored in the ARIZONA game and lost, You can find all kinds of comments and a few articles saying NDSU would win and most Bison fans had them winning by double digits. Voters seem scared to but NDSU at 2 or 3 where they belong. My vote would go as follows

1 WSU
2.SAC st
3. Montana
4. SDSU
5. NDSU

just my humble opinion based on how teams have played this far and not on how teams did in the past or How I think they will end up.

My fault thought you were comparing sdsu and Weber. My take on NDSU being 1 is that they’ve won 8 out of the last 10 championships or whatever it is and as long as they are the defending champs I can’t see dropping them unless they lose to an fcs team. They’ve proven it time and time again.

Edit:
I think when voting you should not just base it on a teams resume (especially this early in the season) you have to take into account history (otherwise all wins would be equal) and how good you think the team is/will be (eye test).

Yea that was an exaggeration, some of the other top fcs teams would be competitive. My argument was just that I don't think it's fair to punish an an fcs team in the rankings for losing to Iowa by 4.

Montana looked better against USD than NDSU did? They both beat them by 17 except NDSU did it on the road. NDSU did play a really sloppy first half but they dominated the 2nd half which evened out to a convincing win that everyone expected. I was disappointed they lost to Arizona but they had every opportunity to win that game but just had one less big play in them than Arizona did... and this isn't the same Arizona team from last year.

If you want to go just off this year not sure how you can justify Montana over NDSU... the other 3 could certainly have a case made for them. Both NDSU and Montana are getting ranked based mostly on past rep right now.

I'm not claiming NDSU beat them worse I'm saying there's really no difference so it's pointless to even use it as a data point in either team's favor.

USD's record doesn't really matter at this point in the season anyway... they're a common opponent so it's at least worth looking at when comparing the two. I'd say all but 5 or so other FCS teams would be 1-3 with USD's schedule also.

There is not a team outside the top 10 who would have two wins if they played USD’s schedule!

A trio of teams set new all-time highs in the AGS Poll this week with Holy Cross at #9, Jackson St at #12, and Mercer at #14.

I believe JSU's #12 ranking is the highest ever for a SWAC team in the AGS Poll - Bethune-Cookman was ranked higher than that a couple times in 2010 but they were a MEAC member back then.

I know I might have my green-and-gold glasses on right now, although I admit that I did not vote NDSU #1 this week. However, I just do not see Montana as the #1 team right now (Northwestern State, South Dakota, Indiana State, and Portland State...not exactly murderer's row). The Grizzlies are very good, but not #1, and not above the XDSU's...yet.

Agree, watched their game at Flagstaff. I think Idaho is going to surprise some Big Sky fans this year. I was impressed.

Weber beat Davis 17 - 12. SDSU beat Davis 24 - 22, but the game was not that close, not really much difference. The bigger difference, the schedules of the two.

SDSU v Iowa (Massey 24 FBS), Davis (top 25 FCS), Butler (non-schol D1), Missouri State (top 10 FCS)

Weber v W Oregon (D2), Utah State (Massey 112 FBS), Utah Tech (D1 since 2020), Davis (top 25 FCS)

Utah State is FBS in name only this year. Sitting at 112 out of 131 FBS schools, and falling.

As for Montana and NDSU, 3 of 4 Montana games were at home. All against weak(er) competition, we will see if they can hold up on the road against some better teams.

Last year I got in trouble for ranking North Dakota, and this season I am going to get in trouble for ranking South Dakota.

Meh, guess I'll stop clinging to one halftime lead next week. There are quality teams that I wanted to rank but didn't.

I tend to agree. But I haven't seen much so far to suggest we can't, other than our three toughest opponents being on the road, with one of them kicking off at 9 pm MST.

I definitely think we can, but we haven't been able to prove we're a top tier team in over a decade. So as of right now, there are 2, maybe 3 teams with better resumes than us, and NDSU, which has proven it's the top team so many times.

If/when we beat Sac and Weber, we should rightfully move up to the top spot. I'm cool with those other teams being above us right now, though.

I had them at #4 this week, basically in a tie with #5. They've done all you can ask so far - nothing to undermine the assumption they're good. On the other hand, the strength of schedule so far doesn't bolster the argument for them. They've shown they're a good team but I don't think they've proven they're a top 5 team yet (like many other teams so far - it's still early). This week's game isn't going to add much either.

And then there's my team. I've got them outside the top 10. The win at EWU is good, but I'm not sure how good EWU is this year. It looks to me like we're still trying to replace some talent lost from last year. I think we'll get there but not there yet. I'm eager to see how we do against UCD this weekend. This should be a better gauge since they played Weber and SDSU close.

I feel you man, I’m just taking the long game. No sense in getting upset at rankings right now. If we’re undefeated at the end of the year and not #1, then I’m right there with you getting pissed. I think we’re getting a lot of respect just being #2 right now.
