Oklahoma State fresh off a shootout win over Tech. SHSU does not want to get into a shootout...no way!

I'm predicting another shoot out for the Bearkats. Tech's passing game schooled OSU, as will ours. However Tech couldn't stop OSU's running game. If we can stop the Bisons running game, which we did, I think we'll be able to stop OSU's.

This game is very winnable for the Kats.

We can stop their run, the question is can we contain their pass?

Do we really want to start talking about a shootout? Do we really want to put everything on the shoulders of our offense? We need to hope our defense can do more to turn the field of play in the favor of the Kats next week. It did not happen against NDSU and we're going to need it in order to be successful in Stillwater...

From the wonderful folks at NewsOk.com, here's "breaking down" SHSU...atleast, the "highlights" of the breakdown...

•Best players: QB Rhett Bomar passed for 819 yards in first three games. DB Bryan Richmond leads the Bearkats in tackles with 34.

•Why they could win: The Bearkats have an explosive offense and are capable of putting a lot of points on the board.

•Why they could lose: A I-AA team, Sam Houston State does not have the same caliber of athlete as Oklahoma State.

•Noteworthy: Starting quarterback is former Sooner Rhett Bomar. Bomar was dismissed from OU for receiving payment for non-work at a Norman car dealership.

Apparently, SHSU is a 'tap-in putt'...guess the seven FBS schools that have lost to FCS schools choked on those little tap-ins...

The Cowboys have a tap-in putt this week against Sam Houston State and former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar. It's the following two games at Texas A&M and Nebraska that will have a huge influence on OSU's postseason fate.

Coach Gundy is not looking past the Kats:

“As far as Sam Houston State, everybody’s aware of their offensive performance. Bomar is playing very well. I think they are 468 yards a game or something like that. He is running the ball effectively and he is throwing the ball well. They are doing a lot of things on offense that give people some problems. We will have our hands full in slowing them down. We will have to have a good game plan and have a great week of practice to play effectively on Saturday night.”

Say something like OSU's qbs are mid-major in quality.

OSU "Thinking Bearkats"

Thinking Bearkats

• Cowboys back on track after Tech win
Jacob Longan - NewsPress

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said he was ready to move on Monday.

The boss of the Cowboys has been a topic of conversation, even nationally, after he used his post-game press conference to spend more than three minutes blasting a column critical of quarterback Bobby Reid published in The Oklahoman on Saturday.

Lost in the discussion of that rant was what his team had done on the field earlier — edge Texas Tech, 49-45, in a see-saw battle.

Gundy made no comment about the game on Saturday, but he had plenty to say Monday.

“It was a good win for us and it’s good to get back on track,” Gundy said. “I was proud of our team. Obviously we had a good day on offense. Defensively, we have got a lot of work. I did say that I was proud of our defense for the stand at the end of the game.”

The Red Raiders (3-1, 0-1) amassed 718 yards in the game, the most ever allowed by OSU.

But as defensive end Nathan Peterson noted, the Cowboys allowed only 10 points in the second half.

Cowboys will face a familiar foe this weekend against Sam Houston State
By Carson Cunningham
Sports Editor

Former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar will return to Stillwater on Saturday to lead the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Bomar said he uses fans’ verbal abuse as motivation.

If you happen to see Oklahoma Sooner fans at Saturday’s football game in Stillwater, there’s a good reason.

Rhett Bomar, the notorious former OU quarterback, returns to the Sooner State this weekend and will quarterback Sam Houston State against the Cowboys.

Bomar was dismissed from Oklahoma before last season after accepting money for a job he didn’t perform at a Norman car dealership. Bomar transferred to Sam Houston State and sat out the 2006 season because of NCAA transfer rules.

OU was forced to vacate its eight wins from the 2005 season and lost two scholarships for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years.

With OU on the road against Colorado, it’s likely many Sooner fans will show up to heckle Bomar. Despite the possibility of OU fans and OSU fans ganging up on him, Bomar said he isn’t concerned.

Taking steps to get better

Following bye week, SHSU secondary working overtime trying to improve
By Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor

After an extended weekend to get their legs back under them and heal some nagging injuries, a refreshed Bearkats football squad has shifted its focus to Saturday’s game at Oklahoma State.

Since camp opened back in August, players and coaches at Sam Houston State had not had much time to catch their breath following two nonconference home games and a thrilling slugfest at North Dakota State.

But the Bearkats returned to Bowers Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, and following Wednesday’s practice, appear ready to go in their final tuneup before Southland Conference action begins in less than two weeks.

“I know we are healthy now and that’s a good thing,” SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said. “Last week we just tried to work on football in general. Tuesday and Wednesday we were just working on fundamentals, trying to get better. Thursday we introduced Oklahoma State and came back on Sunday to work on that some more.

SHSU is a good team. With Bomar anything can happen. I am a little suspicious of their defense. At this point in time SHSU is the best team NDSU has played. Im not picking but Rhett Bomar is good. To win they are going to have to find something extra. Something they didnt bring to the Fabulous Fargo Dome. If its a shoot out I pick SHSU.

This will really test Rhett Bhomar. He faced an injured and empty NDSU backfield but had some of the best linebackers in the land working on him. Craig Bohl basically said we threw everything we had against him.

If OSU stops or slows down Bhomar in the first quarter SHSU will have a long day. If not it's a shootout and flip a coin cause it's anyones game!!!

I'm not looking forward to traveling to Texas next year to face Bhomar again especially since Steve Walker won't be at QB for NDSU next year.

Bearkats back on the big stage

Sam Houston State travels to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State
Gene Schallenberg
Issue date: 9/27/07 Section: Sports

After a week off to recoupe from injuries suffered in the game against the North Dakota State Bison, the Bearkats hit the gridiron this Saturday in their final non-conference game before Southland play begins.

This week, the Bearkats head to Stillwater to face the Cowboys from Oklahoma State.

"This is probably the best opponent we have on our schedule, so what we want to do is to be competitive and hopefully win the game," SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said.

The Bearkats came within a few seconds of knocking off one of the top-ranked Football Championship Subdivision teams in the country on their home field. This is a game in which the Bearkats can see how well they compete against a Football Bowl Subdivision team.

"Any time you play in the non-conference part of your schedule, you just want to get better every week," Whitten said. "That's what I want us to do again. I want them to compete and just do their best."

The Kats also look to keep their players healthy as they prepare for their Southland opponents.

"Another goal is to get all of our players back in one piece ready for conference," Whitten said.

No. 15 Sam Houston State at Oklahoma State

Can someone permanently ban the Mike Gundy-tirade video? Gundy, the coach at Oklahoma State, made an absolute fool of himself in dressing down an Oklahoma City columnist publicly last week. This week his underachieving Big 12 school faces a player who helped beat them 42-14 two years ago. Rhett Bomar was then the quarterback at Oklahoma, but here in the FCS universe, we 're hoping that Bomar's Bearkats finds a way to shut Gundy up.

I don't think Gundy made a fool of himself.. In fact i applaude him because that's the way he feels.. I'd rather see a coach that says what he feels than give generic and politically correct responses all the time.. The media doesn't get a free pass to be criticial of everything. If they can't take what they like to dish out, then go whine to oprah! I don't know if all either said is true or not, but at least he stood up for what he felt was right....

BTW, i think SHS has a chance, but they have to play better defense. They won't win a shootout with this team.

Kats trying to fix FBS problems

SHSU hoping for good start to have shot at knocking off Okie State
By Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor

Sam Houston State hasn’t had much success when it comes to facing Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. In fact, the Bearkats (2-1) are 2-20 heading into today’s contest at Oklahoma State.

The two FBS wins came in 2000 (21-14 over Louisiana-Lafayette) and 2001 (a 20-9 victory over Louisiana-Monroe, long before head coach Todd Whitten took over the SHSU program. Since Whitten was named the head coach in 2005, the Bearkats are 0-4 when facing top level schools.

Granted, two of those losses have come to FBS top 25 teams (then No. 7 Texas last season and then No. 19 Texas Tech in 2005).

LA Times interviewed SHSU beat writer Cody Stark about Whitten and Gundy...

Stark contrast
There's still time for one last word about Oklahoma State's Gundy and his colorful and loud post-game tirade of a week ago. It's been relatively quiet all week down on the edge of the Big Thicket in Huntsville, Tex., where Sam Houston State of the Southland Conference takes on Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., in the Cowboys' first game since Gundy's rant that has been YouTubed to death.

Bearkats Coach Todd Whitten said he heard about Gundy's much publicized opinion about a column written by Oklahoman columnist Jenni Carlson, but he hasn't seen the video.

So don't expect Whitten to unload on Cody Stark, the Sam Houston State beat writer for the Huntsville Item (circulation 9,000).

"He's a football coach and not a talker," said Stark, who wrote a critical column after the Bearkats' 17-13 victory over underdog Angelo State and never heard a word from Whitten in reaction. "I'd be surprised if he reads anything like that. He's just not that kind of guy."

Now that he knows Gundy is that kind of guy, Stark is looking forward to Gundy's post-game news conference today.

"Part of me is saying I'd hate to be a beat writer for his team. I think he could have handled it better. You have a problem with a writer, you take him or her aside in private and don't air your dirty laundry in public. Hopefully Coach Gundy will be more cooperative this time."

not bad so far. that punt return hurts. though bomar would be doing more this game. guess the comments from the osu coach got the team fired up.

Well -- when it conflicts with FCS football, I do not (it will do more than it did tonight several times this year), but when it doesn't, I'm fine with it! xnodx

Now the question is how bad will this poor showing effect us in the polls?

Would have to look at how the rest of the top 25 shapes up...

Ultimately, SHSU is 2-2 and outside of winning the SLC title, is now officially eliminated for a playoff bid. I'd say we have a team that stacks up well against FCS competition, but we'll see how things go against UCA.

We can not focus on the polls - we need to focus on getting everyone healthy and having a shot at the SLC title. That journey begins with a game against UCA a week from tonight.

What was so frustrating about this game tonight is how many times we got inside their 20 yd line and came away with no points.xbangx We had 3 long drives into the red zone and came away with nothing. 6-18 on third downs wont get it done either.

Oh well, time to brush ourselves off and take the SLC by storm.

well slc should be interesting to the end again this year. mcneese st is the only team that has stayed strong so far this season so they are obvous favorites at this point. shsu looked good at ndsu but poor tonight we'll see which one shows up next week.

SHSU looked poor tonight as I think injuries caught up to them, they fell behind and just could not make the most of any opportunities. I think the team we saw at NDSU was a healthy Bearkat squad and this squad that was there tonight was a few strong players down that the Kats held out for SLC play.

SHSU will be back to where we need to be next week because staff and players alike know that this is what is most important.

Game recap from Huntsville Item...

Cowboys romp past Sam Houston 39-3
By Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Bearkats hung around for the first half, but Oklahoma State just had too many playmakers to keep things interesting Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Cowboys (3-2) used a punt return for a touchdown and took advantage of a Sam Houston State turnover for another score to pull away early in the third quarter, cruising to 39-3 victory over the Bearkats.

“Most of our problems were the guys on the other side of the field,” Bearkats head coach Todd Whitten said. “They have a good football team and made some great plays. They have a good pass rush and it was a lot to their credit.
