Here's the release from Northwestern. Northeastern will visit Northwestern on September 1, 2007 - sportscasters across the country will be frustrated!

The Huskies and Wildcats played hoops several times in the early 1990s and each time the score of the game was on ESPN due to the uniqueness of the names.

Wildcats Announce Changes in Future Nonconference Opponents
Eastern Michigan, Northeastern and Southern Illinois are some of the new schools on NU's schedule

Aug. 30, 2005

EVANSTON, Ill. -- With the recent departures of SMU and Air Force from upcoming football schedules, Northwestern Director of Athletics Mark Murphy has announced some replacement opponents for the coming seasons.

Recently, Northwestern and Eastern Michigan agreed to a three-game contract, starting with a game in Evanston on Sept. 16, 2006. This contest replaces one of the two dropped Air Force games. Northwestern also will play Eastern Michigan in 2007 (Oct. 20 at Ford Field in Detroit) and on a yet-to-be-determined date at Ryan Field in 2009.

The Wildcats will open the 2007 season with Northeastern University, giving Northwestern three straight home games to open the year and a total of seven games at Ryan Field. Northwestern was previously scheduled to play at Air Force to open the 2007 season. Now, the Wildcats only true road games that year will come at four Big Ten venues.

Northwestern also has agreed to a one-time contest with Southern Illinois University on Sept. 13, 2008. This will be the first gridiron meeting between the Salukis and Wildcats. Northwestern also will play Syracuse at home that season. A four-year deal between the Orange and Wildcats was previously announced on March 25, 2003.

"I'm pleased with these changes and want to give special mention to former Northwestern assistant Jeff Genyk, now the head coach at Eastern Michigan," said Murphy. "We were in a difficult position after losing the two Air Force games and Eastern really stepped up and helped us out.

"We're looking forward to playing at Ford Field in 2007. Our team and fans had a great experience there with the Motor City Bowl in 2003. It truly is one of the most impressive football facilities in the country."

Wow - I can say that many a people have been waiting for the Northeastern/Northwestern matchup, and now it is a reality. Heck, this game will get some national pub just because of the names.
