MSU will destroy them. UTM has some swagger and hot headed players. Couple really impressive receivers and pretty solid defense. On the other hand they only beat MSU by one after being gifted with six turnovers. Curious to see this game and see if UTM can pull another upset.

I'm not sure two forced fumbles and three interceptions qualifies as "gifted," plus a turnover on downs to boot. But I could be wrong. I think only one fumble was unforced. I still think Montana St wins, but it might be harder than some think.

Montana State will be the best defense UTM will have faced all year.

I think the Bobcats will do something different at QB which will make scouting more difficult. The offense has tailed off lately but they still have one of the best RBs in the country. Montana State by 20.

I still have some significant ties to the Bozeman area so I always like to see the Bobcats do well! I think MSU wins by 13. UTM has some legit playmakers on offense, play smart, sound football. Montana State doesn't have the offense (without help) to blow this open imo.

My connection to the Bobcats (and I root for them) is the National Oil Company Account VP (e.g. Texaco, Shell, Canadian Tire, all worldwide entities) at Hanna Car Wash Systems, International (OEM) in Portland, OR (at the time I was affiliated 1985-92, now moved to Houston and merged, Coleman-Hanna now) when I was a district rep in NJ, NY was an older Bobcat grad, Ron Holm. Im not sure what class he was but he passed in April 2018 after full life. We would always chat during the season how our respective teams were doing and he became a Leopard supporter of course. I poked into very SE Montana (town called Alzada) from my Mountain West trip in early Sept after watching Lafayette-Air Force game on Sept 4th so I could notch another state off my list but obviously want to see so much more. Just didnt have the time this trip. Next will be Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Custer and driving Montana! Maybe I can see Jon Tester farming out there!

If you honestly think UTM was going to beat MSU with a backup QB, you know very little about how good MSU's defense really is.

We don't need to talk about that game, or how we embarrassed ourselves hyping up how cold it was while not wearing warm clothes to show how "Montana Tough" we could be.

Didn't mean to rub salt in the wound but wholeheartedly agree all the "tough guys" going sleeveless, etc. was a poor choice. Cold weather may give a slight psychological edge in that you overcome the dread of being out in it a bit easier, but it's mostly just a mental game. If the team takes the field and just doesn't want to be there, it'll be a long day. But as CCU showed, if you get off the bus wanting to kick some ass, the cold won't stop you from doing that. I imagine getting a lead in a playoff game goes a long way toward warming a guy up.

12 seems right! I had the Bobcats by 13 last night. I think UTM can hang around given the Bobcats fairly pedestrian offense and the Skyhawks coaching.

This and the Holy Cross vs 'Nova feel very similar. The home teams are "decently better" but they play a style that puts them at risk of a close game....

A bit high for my liking. Not sure I have the confidence to put a bet on that. Closer to 8.5 and I'll lay some money down. Our offense under McKay/Housewright is sputtering, but we've only had 7 TO's all year and are 9th in TO margin at +.91/game, so the factor that let UTM beat Misery State (gotta feel bad for their fans, damn) is not likely to happen this weekend.

Edit: I forgot to factor in the "arctic conditions" of the 40 degree forecast. And we should have at least double the crowd of Missouri State. Bobcats by a gazillion. xdrunkyx

Interesting reading from the UTM @ MoState thread…
This would be one of the bigger upsets of the first round if UT-Martin pulled it off.
Bears come out with a chip on their shoulder for being snubbed a seeded place at the Bye Week table. Stats look even but against different levels of competition. MoSt bears by 14 over UT Martin.
This could be a 30 point blowout.
Missouri State is probably the best team playing this week (they should've been a seed), and UTM is just a good-but-not-great team with 0 notable wins. The Bears should win pretty easy.

If Keon Howard doesn't play, the Skyhawks are in for a world of trouble. With him, they might have a chance to make things close. I think they have the right pieces to stay on the field against the Bears' defense. If Howard doesn't suit up, though, they might as well install a mercy rule.
Missouri State might be a bit of a Frisco sleeper. UT-Martin is a good team but that recent loss is hard to get over. I'm with most who think the Bears win comfortably. I think I might have picked this one in the 45-27 range on the pick'em....
UTM has some athletes but I would be SHOCKED to see them beat Montana State. Missouri State played their worst game in two years in all aspects from playcalling to execution and still was driving for the win to end the game.
…if Mitchell doesn't botch that punt return at the 5 at the end of the 1st quarter, this is likely a vastly different outcome.

The crazy thing about last week was UT Martin had forced only 16 turnovers all year and Missouri State had committed only 14 themselves. I don't see lightning striking twice like that for the Skyhawks, and Montana State will grind out a 23-13 type victory.

Students don't get sideline seats. I have no knowledge of if/why students were thrown out of the game, but an assistant coach tweeted that the students poured beer on the team (https://twitter.com/CoachMattJones/status/1464768393391837190?s=20), not heckling. If you throw beer on the opposition, you should absolutely be thrown out.

We have 4th row seats behind the UTM sideline, and I'm very much looking forward to some friendly.... banter. One of my favorite playoff memories was getting some seats in the Furman section in 2006 (I assume they opened up after Furman couldn't sell their allotment). We actually had a great time with their fans, which tamed our heckling as immature recent college grads. They "educated" us that they used to be the Furman University Christian Knights, turning us into quasi-Furman fans, yelling, "Let's go F U C K's!" (We were in our early 20's, give us a break!)

As I mentioned, eliminating a single unforced error (botched PR), which is a fairly rare occurrence, and UTM loses. Misery played a game where they did almost nothing right and STILL almost won. With how bad they played, a really good team would have dump trucked them. Instead... 1 single point.

Again, the irony of being on a website named after the premise that the weaker team has a chance to win any single game and thinking that the results of that 1 game meaning the victor is the better team is palpable. Perhaps we should change the name from AGS to "every Saturday the better team ALWAYS wins". It's a bit clunky and doesn't roll off the tongue, but at least it matches your conclusion....

I'll happily live with my take! I gave UTM credit but simply didn't take into account the turnovers. Figured both teams would put up points with the Bears winning by a "respectable margin", not a blowout....

I have UTM playing tough this week but ultimately come up short in Bozeman. The Bobcats defense is one of the best in FCS. Their offense? Not so much....

One of my favorite playoff memories was getting some seats in the Furman section in 2006 (I assume they opened up after Furman couldn't sell their allotment). We actually had a great time with their fans, which tamed our heckling as immature recent college grads. They "educated" us that they used to be the Furman University Christian Knights, turning us into quasi-Furman fans, yelling, "Let's go F U C K's!" Eh, the way I have always looked at it, is that it doesn't matter who the "better team" is as a subjective evaluation. It's a bit obvious, but the only thing that matters is who the better team was for the 60 minutes of playing time that actually mattered. And if a perceived "better team" lost, then they were not prepared, either mentally, physically, emotionally, with their game planning, etc. All of which are critical components, especially in regard to consistency for real winning teams. From what I saw of them Missouri St has had some consistency problems this year. All teams do at times. So we can all speculate as to who would win 9 out of 10 times, but it doesn't work that way. It matters only in the game in question. I really had no problem with Missouri State, they deserved their at large spot, like UTM deserved their autobid, but the better team on 27 Nov won. We will see who the better team on 4 Dec is. I like Mont St at home, but it wouldn't be a stretch to see UTM pull it out.

Now when picking teams for at larges and seeds, it really is a ridiculous exercise to try and evaluate all the subjective variables and you have to stick to objective ones and whether they translate into expected results is a crap shoot. That's why I love college FB and FCS especially.

Arctic climate? What weather site are you using? I don't put much trust in a forecast this far out, but I'm seeing high of 41, wind 10-20mph, 30% chance of snow, ending before game time and less than an inch of accumulation.

If UTM loses, weather will be a poor excuse. I seem to remember everyone saying Coastal Carolina didn't stand a chance against Montana in the cold in 2013 and they were up 21 pts with less than 9 minutes to play before UM staged a mini comeback. And that was ACTUAL cold (-5 degrees) not a balmy 41.

With 20-30 mph winds with occasional gusts over 40, that decreases the likelihood that Winn beats us with his arm. He only completed 53.5% of his passes, with 2 TD vs 1 INT, though he did amass 272 passing yards. Williams (#11) accounted for about 2/3 of the total passing yards and it reminded me a lot of how McCutcheon was used earlier in the year - throw it up and give the big receiver a chance. He's almost exactly the same build as Cutch (6-3, 205 for Williams vs 6-3,202 for McCutcheon). I like our chances if it's our running game against their running game, especially at home. Get them into 3rd and 3-4 and I think the D gets off the field most of the time.

My connection to the Bobcats (and I root for them) is the National Oil Company Account VP (e.g. Texaco, Shell, Canadian Tire, all worldwide entities) at Hanna Car Wash Systems, International (OEM) in Portland, OR (at the time I was affiliated 1985-92, now moved to Houston and merged, Coleman-Hanna now) when I was a district rep in NJ, NY was an older Bobcat grad, Ron Holm. Im not sure what class he was but he passed in April 2018 after full life. We would always chat during the season how our respective teams were doing and he became a Leopard supporter of course. I poked into very SE Montana (town called Alzada) from my Mountain West trip in early Sept after watching Lafayette-Air Force game on Sept 4th so I could notch another state off my list but obviously want to see so much more. Just didnt have the time this trip. Next will be Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Custer and driving Montana! Maybe I can see Jon Tester farming out there!

Last year's snowpack wasn't good either, which carried thru with a dry summer. If we don't get some help from Mother Nature this winter, the summer is going to be brutal for wildfires. I'm reading it as he was going to be benched. TBH, I kinda wanted him to he benched anyway. We've passed for 108 or less in the last 2 games. That's not acceptable against the Griz on the road. It's inexcusable at home against Idaho. IIRC, Kalm said on the podcast we've averaged 150 yr passing over the last 4 games. He throws a REALLY ugly ball.

So, was he a bad QB or are MSU’s Coaches bad since they haven’t allowed any other QB on the roster to throw over 5 passes this season? Or, I guess there’s a 3rd option…MSU just doesn’t have ANY good QB’s. That seems doubtful.

I can hear the music cranked up at the stadium for awhile now. About time to leave home and get the tailgate started.

I'm eager to see who our QB is and if there have been adjustments to what the offense does (there need to be). Personally, I don't think McKay leaving will hurt us. I don't see Rovig or Mellott doing worse than he's been performing the last few games and I think the team will rally around them. If we lose, I'm inclined to think that won't be the reason. But I don't think we'll lose. We haven't been winning due to our stellar offense.

Edit to clarify: I wouldn't be surprised to see a few mistakes due to a new QB - timing off, procedure penalty, an extra turnover. So I guess that would be due to the QB change, but I think managing the offense, passing accuracy, etc. won't be any worse. I guess we'll soon see.
