After the second game this season where special teams potentially cost us a win there is some discussion about whether or not we should have a special teams coach instead of a position coach somewhere else.

vs. Mercer - Lost by 4 - missed a 41 yard FG, missed a 22 yard FG, missed an XP.

vs. VMI - Lost by 3 in OT - missed a 37 yard FG, missed a 37 yard FG in OT.

No clue, but Texas does, and he’s being paid $1 million.

Yeah, Bobby Hauck. Plus he's the head coach.

Yes, but it's not all he does. He's also the RB assistant.

today, VMI ran a fake FG on 4th and 11, holder a quick flip to TE that gained only 7, too far away for that play, cost VMI 3 points. And a first time KO returner today, gave up on a KO that landed on the 3, spun and dribbled sideways, went OB a moment before a Furman coverage guy could fall on it.

I bet EWU is wishing they had one right now. So far in the 1st quarter they've had one of the worst punts I've ever seen and missed a 25 yard FG.

Edit: They did just convert a fake punt to end the 4th quarter

Edit edit: They convert the fake punt into a TD, and then push the XP wide

Chattanooga's probably the best team in the SoCon and they probably won't be in the playoffs because of having just a terrible kicker. It doesn't help that they lost 5 turnovers today and that embarrassing kick return gaffe at the end hurt, too.

Chattanooga, UNI, UND, Maine, Weber State, Richmond, Central Arkansas, and Portland State should throw their own competitive playoff of very good teams who look like they won't or probably shouldn't get in the playoffs. (Insert the UNI fans who would say, "Oh we'd kill in that tournament." Well, that's what you said about Illinois State as well...)

Harvard's ST coach is also the secondary assistant coach.

EWU gives up a TD on the 2nd half kickoff. Then after scoring a TD, UC Davis almost returns the next kickoff for a TD!

I think most teams tend to have another position coach that also does special teams, I think very few have a dedicated special teams coach (though perhaps more should).

Yeah, that's usually the case from what I've seen. The NCAA has limits on the number of position coaches you can have so if you have a dedicated special teams coach you probably have one fewer positional coach than schools who don't. At NDSU the DT coach is also the special teams coordinator and I believe the head coach has generally worked as the position coach for the specialists (punter, kicker, long snapper).

That's how ours is as well. Our TE coach is also the ST coordinator (https://goleathernecks.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/patrick-shepard/2454) (at least for the next week).

Yes, Ross Jenkins for us. Special Teams is his primary responsibility.
