Mike Potts started his first high school football game for Middletown High against Bel Air (Md.), a 2001 opener Middletown won 34-6 at its own Bill Billings Alumni Stadium.

His collegiate starting debut will be significantly more challenging, but just as welcomed for the William & Mary third-year sophomore quarterback.

Tribe coach Jimmye Laycock said Sunday that Potts will start Thursday night's opener against Division I-A Marshall in Huntington, W.Va.

Potts and Jake Phillips have waged an intense battle for the starting job, and very little separates them. Mike has worked extremely hard this year and has improved his mobility and strength. He has an extremely strong arm...maybe the strongest I've seen at W&M. Laycock has not ruled out using both Mike and Jake in some games.

Freshman QB R.J. Archer has also been getting good reviews, and Jr. Christian Taylor is not far behind Potts and Phillips. We've always produced good QBs, but this is the best depth we've ever had.
