Ex-Pitt quarterback enrolls at Delaware

08/30/2005NEWARK -- Former Pittsburgh quarterback Joe Flacco has enrolled at the University of Delaware, according to university records, though he has not joined the football team.That could change today, when students begin classes. But Delaware coach K.C. Keeler remained mum Monday on the subject of Flacco possibly joining the Blue Hens.
Flacco, 20, was No. 2 on Pitt's depth chart behind Tyler Palko, who became starter last year as a sophomore and was named second-team All-Big East. Since Flacco began expressing a desire to transfer in the spring, first-year Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt has denied his request of a release from his scholarship. As a result, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Flacco cannot accept a scholarship from another school for a year or until Pitt grants a release. He would have to pay his own way to attend Delaware and could not join the football team until classes begin. The Blue Hens started practice Aug. 14 for their Sept. 10 opener against Lehigh. Flacco threw four passes in three games last year as a Pitt red-shirt freshman. He would have three years of eligibility at Delaware beginning immediately. Delaware has just three quarterbacks on its roster -- senior starter Sonny Riccio, junior Ryan Carty and red-shirt freshman Jarryd Moyer -- and Keeler has frequently said he'd prefer more depth at the position.
