View Full Version : Big Sky Power Rankings 10-18

When the dust from last week finally settled, the three teams that are still undefeated in conference play are Eastern Washington, Montana State and...Sacramento State. Fresh off their first win ever in the evil Grizzly den, the Hornets remained undefeated and join the Eagles and Bobcats at the top of the standings, and likewise at the top of the power rankings. It also gives the Hornets a good shot at being undefeated going into their rivalry game, the Causeway Classic, the last weekend of the season. But still a lot of conference football left and many teams still have a say in everything. Here are this week's power rankings (last week's rankings in parenthesis). All are my opinion only.

1. Eastern Washington (1)---Last week beat Idaho at home 71-21, this week Weber State at home---Can anything slow down the Eagles and their high flying offense? They are not showing signs of leveling, instead they seem to be improving week by week. At the beginning of the season, the game this weekend looked to be a good matchup. Now, it just looks like one minor speed bump on the Eagles' schedule.

2. Montana State (2)---Last week won at Weber State 13-7, this week Idaho State at home---A short week of preparation and heading out on the road to face one of the better teams in the conference. None of those obstacles hurt the Bobcats as they came home with a good conference road win. Now they get an extra day of work and a game at home this weekend, one that should be a win.

3. Sacramento State (4)---Last week won at Montana 28-21, this week Northern Arizona at home---As stated in the intro, the Hornets got their first win ever in Missoula over Montana. But there is still work to do and a big win like that won't mean anything if they can't build on it. A tough test awaits them at home this week, one that can sneak up on them if they are not prepared.

4. UC Davis (5)---Last week beat Northern Colorado at home 32-3, this week at Cal Poly---The Aggies responded after a perplexing road loss to one of the conference bottom feeders with a strong home win over another one of the conference bottom feeders. They head out on the road this weekend to play yet another conference bottom feeders (there seems to be quite a few of them).

5. Montana (3)---Last week lost to Sacramento State at home 28-21, this week at Idaho---After losing their starting quarterback in the Eastern Washington game, the Grizzlies seem to be a free fall with no end in sight. They struggled against a weak transitional team at home. They let Sacramento State get their first win ever in Missoula. Now this week, they have to go on the road and play in a tough road venue in the conference.

6. Weber State (6)---Last week lost to Montana State at home 13-7, this week at Eastern Washington---As usual, defense is the Wildcats' calling card but the offense needs to score some points. Last week, the Wildcats held the potent Bobcat attack in check most of the game but the offense could not get going. The question this week, what will happen when the Wildcat defense goes up against the Eagles offense.

7. Northern Arizona (8)---Last week beat Southern Utah at home 59-35, this week at Sacramento State---So it seems the Lumberjacks found their offense finally just as the defense is beginning to show signs of cracking. It is one thing to beat up on Southern Utah at home, It is another to try to beat the conference upstart at their place. But a win could happen and that would be nice.

8. Idaho (7)---Last week lost to Eastern Washington 71-21, this week Montana at home---Did the Vandals even show up in Cheney last weekend? They certainly offered very little resistance to the Eagles attack. They head back home this weekend with a game against their old school rivals, in a game that both teams want badly. This has the makings of a great game.

9. Portland State (10)---Last week beat Idaho State at home 31-10, this week bye---Who said the Vikings have no defense? They got the win last week over a rugged Idaho State team and they did it pretty much with defense. If the defense can continue to play that way, the Vikings could turn their season around. It is about time. They get an extra week to prepare for the stretch.

10. Idaho State (9)---Last week lost at Portland State 31-10, this week at Montana State---After a good strong showing at home the week before and getting a win over one of the conference's heavies, the Bengals laid an egg on the road last week. The Bengals have been much better at home that on the road this year. This week, they stay on the road and meet another heavy.

11. Northern Colorado (11)---Last week lost at UC Davis 32-3, this week at Southern Utah---Another week, another loss for the Bears and another learning game for them. The new coaching staff has gone through some intense growing pains this year and this last game was just another example. However, they are set up for a good chance at a win this week, but on the road.

12. Cal Poly (12)---Last week bye, this week UC Davis at home---The Mustangs took the week off and watched from afar the happenings in the conference last week. The also took the chance to regroup and get ready for the role of spoiler. They get their first chance this weekend, bringing in one of the better conference teams from the northern side of the state.

13. Southern Utah (13)---Last week lost at Northern Arizona 59-35, this week Northern Colorado at home---The Thunderbirds last week realized that they most likely cannot outscore people in the conference. Maybe another approach is in the cards. They welcome another team that is near the bottom to their home turf. This may be a good shot for a win and to get things going.

RECAP: 1-2 pulling away, 3-4 keeping up, 5-6 fading a bit, 7-8 trying to stay close, 9-13 off the pace

1. Eastern Washington ---Did EWU think they needed to put up a basketball score in this game? That is some high flying offense to score 71 points. Next up is the BBQ which may be one of the better defenses EWU has faced this season?

2. Montana State ---Took down the BBQ in a defensive slugfest. Next up is Idaho State in Bozeman. Cat's better not look past them as they are capable of beating a good team.

3. Sacramento State ---What a nice surprise in Missoula for the Hornets. Earning their first W in Missoula.

4. UC Davis ---UCD struggled in the first half against UNC, but adjusted at halftime and dominated the 2nd half. This game is what UCD needed after the surprise loss against ISU.

5. Montana ---UM seems to be getting worse as the season progresses, and Sac appears to have been underrated. Next up is for the brown stein.

6. Weber State ---The BBQ has had several high ranked opponents, but it not good to lose those games in Ogden. It does not get any easier this week with a trip to Cheney.

7. Northern Arizona ---NAU is still in the hunt for a playoff spot, especially with a win over a P5 FBS team. This next game at Sac is a big one for both teams and NAU has a huge opportunity to move up the ranking with a W.
Edit: Don't look past NAU. They may be underrated. The loss against UNC is what is hurting them and that loss may be an anomaly.

8. Idaho ---Giving up 71 points is not good. Next up is a falling Griz team with a poor offense and that game is very winnable for Idaho.

9. Portland State ---PSU still has a chance to be a bubble team, but needs to win out. Up next is a weak CP team in Portland, but not before a bye.

10. Idaho State ---After surprising UCD, ISU returns to the L column against PSU. Will not be easy this weekend with a trip to Bozeman.

11. Northern Colorado ---UNC has a chance this weekend, but it is a road game. Will the clipboard throwing assistant be allowed to have a clipboard?

12. Cal Poly ---I feel as though CP is completely changing their system and it may take a year or two to recruit players for the new system. Meanwhile CP is left with a bad season or 2.

13. Southern Utah ---It was not that long ago SUU won the conference title. Oh how far they have fallen to be fighting for last place.

RECAP: 1-3 pulling away, 4-5 a step behind, 6-7 a step and a half behind, 8-9 Could still play spoiler role, 10-13 fighting for last place.

EWU has a pretty brutal schedule for the rest of the season. Weber, then MSU, then UC Davis. Follow that up with a Portland State that always punches up against EWU and it will be a miracle, even with how the Eagles have been playing, for them to not drop at least one.

The toughest 2 of the remaining 4 are in Cheney. So I would not be too surprised if EWU enters the playoffs undefeated.

It's from Weber BBQ Grills. So they get called BBQ or The Grills as a nickname.

I think is would be sweet and tangy if Weber State would start a BBQ school and have Weber Grills sponsor the school.

Wait... you mean it's not?!?! I just realized I misread their wiki page, "Weber State University (pronounced /ˈwiːbər/ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English) WEE-bər (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Pronunciation_respelling_key)) is a public university (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_university) in Ogden, Utah (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogden,_Utah). It was founded in 1889 as Weber Stake Academy." xlolx

That is a BOLD statement coming from a Lumberjack. US News and World Report ranking for 2022:
National Universities: MSU - 263; NAU 288
Top Public Schools: MSU - 132; NAU 147
Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs: MSU 131; NAU 162

Median starting salary of almumi: MSU $54,500; NAU $48,100 (MSU is 13.3% higher where it counts - the wallet)
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/montana-state-2532
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/northern-arizona-university-1082

NAU moved up to #191 in NSF research rankings at $58.91M; MSU ranked 93rd at $154M and MSU has been over $100M in research expenditure for more than a decade. MSU is classified as R1 in the Carnegie Classification for "very high research activity" (only 131 nationwide, and the ONLY ONE in the 5-state region of MT, ID, WY, ND and SD).

Thats what we get for being a liberal arts college. There are some better paying degrees at the school. Our hospitality school is top notch. So is forestry, biological sciences, etc.

Can't say that it was Weber that I saw coming, but I knew there was no way EWU would walk away from this lineup unscathed. Wouldn't surprise me if they dropped a second one. Reality is hard. Still a national title mix team.

Hopefully we can glean some defensive strategies from what worked for Weber. I tuned in late to see if BBQ could hold on to their lead, so I didn't see how their offense built said lead, but it appears the running game was a big factor? All the TD's were on runs, and they rushed for 255 yds on 48 attempts, omitting the 5 sacks (5.3 ypc). Our running game is definitely going to be a key ingredient to coming away with a W on the red turf. McKay is serviceable, but man... he can throw some ugly balls.

If good ol BN is anything like it was before, they’ll roast you if you try to criticize him. I continually got shamed for daring to suggest Tucker Rovig wasn’t good.

Honestly, I have almost no experience on BN and usually forget there's even a Bobcat forum. Once I discovered AGS, this is the only place I'll go for FCS discussion. I tend to be a bit of a pessimist when it comes to my teams (I'm also a Cubs and Vikings fan xbawlingx, so it's been in my best interest to temper my expectations). The discussion here is more in line with what I think of my team rather than go to BN and hear about how this year's defense would put the '85 Chicago Bears D to shame. Aim low and beat expectations, I always say!

There’s some really good posters there, but in general, they don’t like any “criticism”. McKay is the best QB ever behind Barriere, etc.

I had to leave because I developed a bit of a stalker, and I just don’t care for those things.

I have a buddy that I've tried to get over here on AGS. During the game on Saturday, he said everyone has anointed McKay, which I assume he was referring to everyone at BN. People looking at their team thru tinted glasses doesn't interest me. Especially when, as I said, I'm typically harder on my teams than others. I'm kinda like Rob Schneider in Waterboy....

E-griz is just as bad last week the head coach, oc and second string place kick holder need to go. This week NC aspirations. No joke a thread was started last week on how Bad MSU was going to crush the Griz.
AGS has much more level headed discussions. I watch every game and hope for the best. Correction this year I watch and hope for no injuries. Our 5th string running back and 3rd string center are the two I worry about the most. Well and 2nd string QB
