HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Rhett Bomar's year-long exile from college football is almost over.

When Sam Houston State opens the season Thursday against Angelo State, the Bearkats' new quarterback can finally begin a new chapter in his life. No more talk about Oklahoma, the NCAA violations or Big Red Sports/Imports.

What's done is done. At least, that's how the 22-year-old junior from Grand Prairie views life and the events at OU that triggered his dismissal from the team on Aug. 2, 2006. He's thinking more about ASU, a team with six returning starters on defense.

Besides notoriety, what does Bomar really mean for the Bearkats in 2007?

Before taking the field as a Bearkat, Rhett Bomar was a standout at Grand Prairie High School, in Grand Prairie, Texas, a suburb just west of Dallas. As a junior, Bomar threw for 2,860 yards, with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His senior year cut short by an injury, Bomar started just eight games and threw for 1,300 yards, with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

When Bomar signed his letter of intent to play for Bob Stoops, Oklahoma was ranked #1 in the polls, and the season he signed, the Sooners went to the National Championship game where they lost to LSU. The Oklahoma Sooners recruiting class for 2004 was quite impressive, with the Sooners featuring the top two players at key positions in Bomar and running back Adrian Peterson.

Bearkats prepare for exciting season behind Whitten, Bomar

With the beginning of each year, most students are getting reacquainted with the habitual cycle of classes, studying, eating and sleeping. However, the fall semester also allows many students to get reacquainted with something equally important - college football.

In his second year, head coach Todd Whitten saw Sam Houston State have a drastic turnaround as the Bearkats improved their record from 3-7 to 6-5. With former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar leading the offense, some talented transfer recruits, and a more experienced coaching staff, it's understandable for some to feel this team has a legit shot at a conference title, last won in 2004.

"Offensively, I think we're going to be strong up front," Whitten said. "We've got a strong offensive line, and I think we have a good group of running backs. The question mark will be at wide receiver. We have a bunch of new guys and it all depends on how well they develop."
