Prediculations later in the week…

3 of 4 correct picks, pretty good score pick on the 1 miss & overall scores/margins were fairly accurate, except 1 right pick/bad call on score/margin. Even FUBeAR can’t nail ‘em all every week. 4 really interesting matchups this week.

Power Ranking

1) Mercer (learning new lessons every week. Alabama loss hurts the Bears CFP chances :D)
2) Furman (we back beeyatches. bring on some baby blue bellhops)
3) ETSU (ship is still riding high on the bounding m(ount)ain)
4) Samford (they are better than even their fans think they are)

Tough to separate & rank the next 3 at this point…

5a) Chattanooga (Does Mocks loss to VMI & their 2-3 record hurt their chances for a #1 seed & the 2021 FCS National Championship they have already won in their fans’ minds?)
5b) VMI (weird Team this Fall…starting to get a Jekyll/Hype vibe coming from LexVegas
5c) Citadelish (shoulda given ETSU more of a challenge after showing they aren’t completely horrible the week before)

8) WCU (game, feisty…just like a Catamount, but more like a 3 legged Catamount that’s blind in 1 eye & had their claws clipped off - they’re growing back, but it’s a slow process.)
9) Wofford (unraveling, at an accelerating pace)

I was 3-1 last week. VMI kept their title hopes alive for one more week. I saw the standings and they looked familiar. This was where I have it after this week.

1) East Tennessee State - Undefeated after an unprecedented conference woodshedding
2) Mercer - Undefeated in conference play after a spirited effort by WCU
3) VMI - Avenged being left at the altar last spring
4) Furman - Ran roughshod in Sparkle City
5) NottaQuitta - Came up short in OT
6) A Citadel - Is their luck running out
7) Samford - Resting up for their trip to Sparkle City
8) Wofford - Is time running out for Con Man Conklin
9) Western Carolina - Had nothing to be ashamed of against one of the SoCon's best

This Week's Games
East Tennessee State @ NottaQuitta - Bucs take their frustrations on not making the playoffs last spring out
Samford @ Wofford - Bammerdogs return to their winning ways
VMI @ Mercer (Game of the Week) - Bears defend this house
A Citadel @ Furman - Paladins take it to the punchless Chuckydogs

Not joking when I say Samford may score 80 on us. Like, I wouldn't be surprised. If we score more than 30 it's because Samford hangs 40+ on us. This could be very bad.

my team is bad this year. I'm hoping the socon does well.

So I'm just going to roast anyone who doesn't predict Samford scoring 40 on us.

The burden of proof is on those who think they won't score 40.

Wofford is bad, lean into it fellas, this is a hailey comet kind of yearxlolx

Power rankings:
1) ETSU - still undefeated. They stay here until they lose ( and that will likely be in December )
2) Mercer - Still rolling
... some separation here - and rankings could vary on any given Saturday ...
3) VMI - big win this week
4) Furman - Started playing offense again
5) Chattanooga - probably better than #5, but they lost and everybody above them won
6) Samford - will likely move up, but they are here for now.
7) That Citadel - played 3 good quarters, but football is a 4 quarter game.
8) WCU - played hard last week
9) Wofford - player runs for 80 yards on opening drive, doesn't play much until end of game when coached try to run out the clock for the loss. Apparently this is Conklin's offensive scheme. When Mike Ayers teams were picked 7th or 8th in preseason, he frequently managed to win the conference. That ain;t happening thins year.

This week:
Samford at Wofford - Every week, I think, "This is the week we break out." We struggle against Samford even with very good teams. It's homecoming - the stands may be empty after halftime.
ETSU at Chattanooga - prior to last week, I would have predicted this to be the conference championship game.. It will be hard fought, but ETSU has the horses to pull out a 27-24 win.
VMI at Mercer - VMI won a clutch game, but I still think they are a middle of the pack SoCon team. Cubbies win 35-10.
A Citadel at Furman - Furman ran at will against a depleted defensive line, but will face a stronger line this week. The bullpups could well win, but I suspect the horsies pull out a 31-28 win

Playoff predictions:
ETSU
either Mercer or Chatty, but not both

Reign of Terrier

My power rankings:
1. ETSU
2. Mercer
3. Furman
4. VMI
5. Chattanooga
6. Samford
7. The Citadel
8. Western
9. Wofford

I think the only teams with a shot at the playoffs right now are in the top 4. VMI can only hope to win the conference. The committee won't look kindly on that Citadel loss, even if it was a rivalry game. Chattanooga is probably the best of the rest, but I think every team in the bottom 6 has one or two fatal flaws. I think Furman may have fixed theirs with their new QB, but who knows.

Not a ‘final answer,’ but as FUBeAR is cipherin’ it up right now, he’s thinking the HomewoodHounds may win their next 4 and put a good scare (or more) into some toothy reptiles the following week. If that all spools off correctly, that end of season match-up against FU will have major playoff & perhaps SoCon Championship implications.

WOW! Can I send you a Samford shirt, hat, or cushion? LOL!

FUBeAR
October 12th, 2021, 10:17 PM
Obviously, FUBeAR has no interest in this happening as he strongly desires the MountainPrivateers to lose at least 2 games, but I was just looking over Brian McLaughlin’s Playoff projections & it’s pretty clear he is expecting ETSU to go undefeated and win the SoCon. Then he lists the SwashbucklingClimbers as a “Near-Seed.”

1st - WTF!
2nd - WTF!
3rd - WTF!
4th - OK, I’m calm now….time for FACTS!

There is no other FCS Team that can go undefeated in FCS games AND has an FBS P5 (SEC, btw) win. Oh, sure…it was only Vandy, but A) ETSU kicked their a$$e$ and B) Vandy has won 2 FBS games.

* Eastern Washington is the only other Team that can go undefeated in FCS games AND has an FBS win…but they beat 0-5 G5 UNLV in 2 OT’s
* Sam Houston can go undefeated in FCS, but they don’t play an FBS game and they only play 10 games (not that there’s anything wrong with that ;-) )
* North Dakota State can go undefeated, but they don’t play an FBS game. They did play a bad PFL Team though…probably not as good a team as Virginia-Wise, to be honest.
* Montana has an FBS P5 win over Washington, a Team with 1 P5 win over Cal, a Team with no FBS wins, but the Griz lost to FCS Eastern Washington.
* Villanova can go undefeated in FCS, but they lost their FBS game. OK, it was Penn State, but they lost similarly to Mercer’s loss to Alabama. If Mercer wins out, are we going to be talking about a Top 5 seed for the Bears? FUBeAR thinks not!
* Southern Illinois can go undefeated in FCS, but lost their FBS game to Kansas State. OK 3-2 K-State looks pretty good and the Salukis game with them was pretty close, but they still lost. They can argue for the seed behind (hypothetically) undefeated ETSU
* JMU lost to Villanova & doesn’t play an FBS game
* South Dakota State lost to Southern Illinois and, sure, they won an FBS game, but it was over Colorado State, who lost to Vanderbilt (see above)
* Montana State can go undefeated in FCS, but they lost their FBS game to Wyoming.
* Kennesaw State can go undefeated in FCS and they get huge props for their close win over Reinhardt, but they lost their FBS game to Georgia Tech
* UT-Martín can go undefeated in FCS, but they lost their FBS game to Western Kentucky
* Duquesne can go undefeated in FCS, but they lost their FBS game to TCU
* Mercer can go undefeated in FCS, but…previously discussed…they can argue it out with Villanova & Southern Illinois for seeding if they win out (beating ETSU in that process and making this whole post moot)
* Rhode Island - URI can go undefeated AND possibly have an FBS win…over UMass though. Are they still pretending to be FBS? Pretty sure they aren’t P5.
* Southeastern Louisiana can go undefeated in FCS, but they lost the FBS game to Louisiana Tech
* UC Davis has an FBS win over Tulsa, but lost to Idaho State
* William & Mary can go undefeated in FCS, but lost their FBS game to UVa (not the Wise version)

So, my point, and I do have 1, is that ETSU should, at this juncture, not be thought of as a “near-seed” in any FCS Playoffs conversation. The Bucs, instead, should be seen as sitting in the cat-bird seat with the #1 Seed theirs to lose.

ETSU Fans should be apoplectic about this lack of awareness by FCS aficionados.

Let me say it again…

At this point in the season, ETSU is the ONLY FCS Team that can go undefeated in FCS games AND has an FBS P5 (SEC, btw) win.

GO TELL ‘EM!!!

FUBeAR
October 12th, 2021, 10:36 PM
OK…that was the Extended Play version. This is the short version…

ETSU & Eastern Washington are really the only 2 Teams that should be in any conversation for the #1 seed at this point in the season.

Both are undefeated in FCS
Both have 1 D2 win
Both have an FBS win.

As comparing the quality of D2 wins is not an exercise anyone wants to undertake, the ‘tie-breaker’ is the quality of their FBS win.

ETSU curb-stomped a P5 SEC Team that has 2 FBS wins
Eastern Washington took 2 OT’s to get an FBS win over a winless G5 Mountain West Team.

No comparison. ETSU should be EVERYONE’S projected #1 Seed right now. Case closed!

Power Rankings:

1.) ETSU – They remain unblemished and look good; big road test coming up
2.) Mercer – They got a scare on the road, but pulled it out; Mercer and WCU were within 2 total yards of each other… even with Mercer plus 2 in turnovers…WCU is getting it together
3.) Furman – they got it together, but can it hold?
4.) VMI – Bounced back nicely
5.) Chattanooga – are they the new Samford?
6.) Samford – They could be 5-0 right now, real easy
7.) The Citadel – until half way through the third it was a one score game, and then we fell apart, big penalty followed by 50 yard ETSU pass and quick score and then we just curled up on O; the D kept plugging away, but they were hard pressed with two quick three and outs and then three turn over on downs, two in our territory; we have to get our O clicking better; it looked good at times but not consistent
8.) Wofford – It almost looked like Wofford was going to break it open, and Furman came alive and put a hurt on them; the Terriers got problems
9.) Western Carolina – they do not look like an 0-6 team…they may win in a couple weeks, after their break; uhg.

This Week's Games:

East Tennessee State at Chattanooga – With the way UTC has been alternating wins and losses, I really like them at home to spoil ETSU’s current happiness, but I think the Bucs will prevail, they have a destiny; both Massey and Sagarin actually have UTC winning – 30-23

Samford at Wofford – Not sure Wofford will be able to stop the Samford pass onslaught; Samford is currently 6-0 against Wofford…eek - 42-20

VMI at Mercer – Mercer has survived two fairly good offenses in Samford and WCU, but only because the opposing Ds were bad; VMI is a little better, but still the Bears might be too much at home – 34-24

The Citadel at Furman – The Dogs have won 5 of the last 7 including 2 of 3 at Furman; if the Dogs play like they did against VMI they will win; If Furman plays like they did against Wofford in the second half, they will win; I’m thinking the latter unfortunately – 31-27

I mentioned it in another thread. If ETSU wins out it will get a top three seed. Bank on it. Ignore the biased posters and look at the committee history. Probably not a #1, based on SOS, unless others falter. EWU opponent are 28-27, right now. ETSU's are 26-34, right now. That will change obviously. But it is a big if on winning out in any event. Their next two game are critical road games. Mercer is a danger, but at home for them. I would give it another two or three weeks to really look hard at comparisons and opponents. Lots could change. Heck, Vandy could start winning some SEC games. Unfortunately, Del St and a Div II aren't earth movers for ETSU. But neither are W Ill or a Div II for EWU.

I hear ya…and that IF is as big as a big IF can get…but, it’s not just the posters ignoring the rightful conversations that should be taking place about ETSU right now. It’s the FCS pundits & polls as well. I see them paying a little bit of ‘lip service’ to the Bucs, but they are just ignoring the resume and falling back on circular MVFC, BigSky, CAA logic.

”Oh, you beat Elon by 3 and Elon lost to the worst Team in the SoCon. No worries, the Formerly Fightin’ Former Christians’ website still has a CAA logo on it. Right? Quality win, then. Nice job. We’ll rank you now. Good thing you weren’t beating a bottom-feeder like Valpo. Oh, they played NDSU this year? Yeah, like I said, quality D1 win for a MVFC stalwart over the UnCrusaders.”

…and so on.

Polls & Rankings matter to the Committee in At-Large selections & seeding.

The CAA is doggy do in their bottom half. Same with Big Sky to some extent. But they get lifted by their top teams. I don't see anyone in the CAA after Nova and JMU being real good. A couple others are ok, but there is a double standard. It is funny to see people living off of rep well past it's realistic usefulness. Save all those arguments for a couple weeks. If they are all still valid, or even moreso, let loose.

Hopefully, the 9-2/6-2 (or so) Bucs will end up doing a great job getting a 3rd or 4th At-Large bid for the SoCon and ‘making some noise’ in the Playoffs until they have to travel to Greenville, SC or Macon, GA in some later round.

Don’t typically like to use the weekly thread to ‘pimp’ individual Players, but just saw this & thought it was a grandiose enough description with the moving pictures to back it up…so thought some of y’all might like to see.

It does also go to the earlier discussion of the talent level in the SoCon, the lack of National FCS awareness (or acknowledgement) of that talent level…and performance of that talent vs. Teams that are in a conference which is, by consensus, the best College Football in the land.

BTW - these 3 clips are Porn for OL-lovers, so…possibly NSFW if you are one of those…and have Toobin-tendencies.

As I’ve said, I just don’t see Wofford doing anything well, except avoiding penalties & pulling a few plays/game on O out from under their bobbed tails. They aren’t horrible, overall - good enough to beat a top 1/3rd CAA Team - but they really appear neutered on O & and tame on D - still just Pedestrian Beige - like their helmets. OTOH - Samford is DANGEROUS - they do A LOT very well on O. They will score points on ANYONE. D, um, not so much…but they do have some talent on D…just need to pull it together & they may be able to get back in the SoCon race. Sure, they’ve lost 3 games. The teams they lost to, though, have lost 2 games total - both to FBS Teams. I don’t see this one as being close - unless a significant “Anonymous” (cough, cough, sputter, cough) gift appeared in the SoCon Offices this week and Woffy gets even more Home Cookin’ than the typical Golden (or maybe it’s Beige) Corral buffets they receive every week.

SLOBBERKNOCKER of the Week…if their Coaches can overcome their Passing Envy…or whatever psychological condition they both seem to have that tells them to throw the ball as much as they do. Here’s a tip - Have y’all ever heard of North Dakota State? Just. Do. That. Both of these Teams can pretty much out-athlete every other Team in the SoCon, but they won’t really be able to out-athlete each other. So - consistency, execution, and discipline will be the 3 X-factors in this game. I’d kinda like to see Chatt have the edge in that, but watching their sideline this year has told me otherwise. So, in a close war, the PiratesOutOfWater fire the final broadside.

Oooh - speaking of DANGER - both of these Teams are dangerous. The Bears hibernated thru the 3rd quarter last week, but they used their slumber to find out they have a Placekicker than can make a BOMB to win a game at some point if needed. Their new “Red Zone” is, possibly, from the 40 in. VMI went toe-to-toe and refused to lose to a Team that is better than them last week after getting pretty much whipped the week before by a Team that is not. Consistency, as mentioned above, matters. The Bears have been the more consistent of these 2, so far, so I think that carries the day. Also - I’m not sure VMI’s great WR, Herres, is healthy. He sure was not last week. He’s a game-changer.

Mercer 40 - VMI 31

If we knew the Furman Team that beat the miniature canines to a bloody red & beige pulp last week will be the one that shows up Saturday night, I really wouldn’t need to type anything more than a score below.

Furman 31 - Citadelesque 14

PROGRAM NOTE: Despite a full week of loud sobbing, whining, and the issuance of impotent threats emanating from the Rattery near the Battery (the 10 paragraphs & 30 lines here are just 1 such example - https://thesportsarsenal.com/2021/10/14/college-football-week-7-2021-thursday-notes-and-observations/), Kickoff time remains at 6 PM. The bellhops can miss their milk & cookies before storytime one night and they can catch up on their beauty rest while they heal up from another FU-administered mutt-whippin’ on Saturday NIGHT!

3 of 4 correct picks last week, pretty good score pick on the 1 miss & overall scores/margins were fairly accurate, except 1 right pick/bad call on score/margin.

I think because of a lack of history people wrote off VMI pretty quickly when they lost to The Citadel (in a rivalry game) but I thought they were a tough, hard nosed football team that was well coached and put it all on the table. They gambled on some things and played to win last week, and didn't play not to lose, if that makes sense. I still think Mercer wins today, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see this game go the other way.

ETSUX should be glad UTC didn’t pound them in the spring. Final score was closer than the game today. If UTC had any special teams play and a decent coaching staff they would be dangerous.

I think because of a lack of history people wrote off VMI pretty quickly when they lost to The Citadel ..... I still think Mercer wins today, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see this game go the other way.

you were saying......

you were saying......VMI outcoached us last week. Not the most talented team, but their coaching staff seems to get them in position on both sides of the ball to be effective.

Epic beat down on some poor Bears today.
VMI showed up big, Mercer did not show at all.

Weird week in the SOCON. The Mercer game was just beyond belief. I could see VMI maybe winning, but...jeez. I thought UTC had a chance but still felt ETSU would pull it out. Lots of weird games in all conferences it seems like.

I was attempting to give the Keydets a complement saying the pollsters and people making picks had written them off after the loss to the Citadel largely because they don't have a history of being a playoff type team (the opposite effect are teams like Jacksonville State still in the polls - largely because of their history). I did pick Mercer to win the game, but was saying I wouldn't be too surprised if it went the other way (which it did).

A couple of great wins by the Keydets the past couple of weeks. I came away impressed last week, particularly with your coaching staff.

got it, thank you, Defensive Coaches' game plan was beautiful, and VMI showed its depth on offense as well.

This was two weeks in a row we've had opponents kick (and make) 50 yard field goals against us.

I guess he also blames the refs for going 0-4 on fourth downs?

The two are entirely different issues. It was a highly questionable call on big gaining play for us. I guess the ref studied the rule book all night long finding that one and then judging it it to be applicable. Even the game announcers were like, "are you kidding me." I'd be pissed too. I was pissed.

ElCid… maybe if the shoe was on the other foot I'd agree with you. A penalty is a penalty.
It was a hard fought game - Thompson's interview just rubbed me wrong.
I don't see the penalties as the reasons you lost the game.

Usually not, and I agree in general, but that was a key play in regard to yardage and momentum. A chicken shyt penalty, and a personal foul to boot. It shouldn't have affected them as it did, but they got off track from it. Not from a down perspective but in the head. We also need to look for a new kicker. Geez.

I don't see the penalties as the reasons you lost the game.Absolutely not. The correctly called penalty was a distant secondary reason for the bellhops’ loss.

The 6 PM Kickoff time, clearly, was the primary reason that Furman was able to manipulate the situation & steal a double-digit victory away from a far superior Football Team.

They must have been, right? I heard somewhere that they won “every single statistical category.”
