"If the Eagles prevail in this matchup with the Golden Rams, they'll be able to declare themselves the early leaders of FCS - for a week, anyway, when many of the teams playing in the Top 25 start their 2007 schedules. For five days, you will rightfully be able to crow about being the biggest, baddest team.

But should they lose - to a team from Division II, from whence they came - they will be ranked (for a week, anyway) the lowest of the low in FCS - or indeed, all of Division I. Every school could have a leg up on them and they would be the masters of disaster."

Those penalties have been the real key in this game. Albany St. should have a comfortable lead, but keep frittering it away with those penalties. The biggest thing for NCCU has been their QB's lack of comfort. He's been overthrowing receivers and missing open men all night.

Watched the last seven minutes are so...

Sloppy game by the NCCU head coach. Very bad mismanagement of the clock and the plays on the field. NCCU should have better position to win that game. That INT to the end zone was something that should not have happened.

Not a good start for NCCU on their way to Division I...losing to a Div II school? The MEAC isn't a big fan of that. SWAC, maybe, but not the MEAC who is keeping an eye on NCCU for expansion.

MEAC lost to a transitional team (which I wouldn't count) twice, while SWAC lost to two Div II teams (NCCU had not begun transition yet). You can argue that a third team lost to a sub-Div I team when PVA&M had that choke job against NAIA Langston.

MEAC losses to sub-Div I teams in 2006:
Howard (Winston Salem St)
North Carolina A&T (Winston Salem St)

SWAC losses to sub-Div I teams in 2006:
Alabama State (Tuskegee)
Prairie View A&M (Langston -- you can't argue, even if not completed -- had no business trailing by as much as they did to an NAIA)
Southern (NC Central)

You guys know how I feel -- less than impressed with the play on the field and even further disappointed with the lack of administrative support.

The SWAC completely neglects the Title IX and Olympic sports. Even the "revenue" sports like mens' basketball is thrown to the shed by most schools (do I need bring up the non-Div I home slates, TxSo's infamous UConn/UTEP in back to back dates).

Football, all the schools are not on the same, level playing field -- even Grambling let shrubs grow in the stands of a stadium named after the greatest coach of all time. Tossing the mandate is great, but if it means twice as many games against FBS and sub-Div I foes, that's no good.

If I was the SWAC, I'd review a few of the plans brought forth by conferences who want to improve their athletic and academic image. It wouldn't be hard to compile -- first thing, avoiding any athletic team from playing a road game at a sub-Div I squad (a norm in sports other than FB and MBB, wait, not even WBB - Grambling makes a stop on the road against sub-Div I competition). If you want a sub-Div I mentality, your conference should just move on down.

I would also add parts of the plan that would include ways to properly staff an athletic department too.

Brought up NCCU's search for a conference which is related as NCCU needs to put their best foot forward. You'd assume they'd want into the MEAC or worst case, the SWAC -- which is geographically, not a fit, though I know a few folks want a super HBCU conference. I threw in the SWAC and the SWAC-ites of the site began mounting their frustrations with me...

NCCU will have a rough year, well rough by 2 or 3 losses. NCCU is still very strong, and they will continue to be a great program. Factor in a new coach, plus the players that they lost but still this is a very talented team exspecially on the defensive side of the ball.

I'm now putting the Albany State/Tuskegee game on my list of must see games.

Having watched a good portion of the first half, I'd say that NCCU has a long, long way to go in order to compete in Division I. I guess it isn't that surprising, given that the two CIAA schools in my hometown play their games at high school stadiumsxeekx .

By the way, are we calling these transitionals FCS teams at this point? If FU beats Presbyterian, it won't count as a Division I win, will it?

Having watched a good portion of the first half, I'd say that NCCU has a long, long way to go in order to compete in Division I. I guess it isn't that surprising, given that the two CIAA schools in my hometown play their games at high school stadiumsxeekx .

By the way, are we calling these transitionals FCS teams at this point? If FU beats Presbyterian, it won't count as a Division I win, will it?

Honestly they arent that far off! Many d-2 teams like West Georgia out of the GSC and a few others play at high school stadiums, what does that have to do with NCCU. NCCU is ready. They did a solid job in D-2 and if it were not for some bogus calls against Delta State last year, and North Alabama in 05, thet might have got into the Championship game. NCCU aint no slouch, Albany State is just that good.

I watched the game (live) on CSTV (Thank God for DirecTV!).

Was not impressed with either team.

Here's one possible thought that no one has brought up. When the plans were being drawn up by the NCCU "braintrust" about moving up to FCS level competition, I'm sure they thought that Coach Broadway was going to remain there for a few more seasons. Instead, he took de' $$$$$ to go to Grambling St. It's been proven time & again, coaching makes a BIG difference. I.E. Notre Dame!

I agree - these two teams looked terrible. It always amazes me that dii teams want to move up to DI when they were nothing in dii. xsmiley_wix

And we can't wait for the season to kick off... I have been impressed with what I have read and heard about Broadway. He seems to have the guys focused on TEAM ball and being good representatives of the school. Call me nostalgic, but the things I am hearing are "Eddieques". My wife ( an SU grad) jokingly asked me when was I gonna let go of Coach Rob... I told her when I let go of life (lol).

Don't get me wrong... I think Doug did a wonderful job restoring the program... I thought Spears had good intentions but got caught up in his own clippings, and I think Broadway will do a good job. But for me...ever since 1962 when I made my first field trip as a 1st grader on a school field trip to Grambling, I became a fan of two men who stopped by to welcome us to Grambling. It was President RWE Jones and football Coach Eddie Robinson... from that day til now, I have been Grambling, Grambling, Grambling. Hopefully Broadway can take care of Coach Rob's program for us...xbowx
