Gerald Davis is the top returning ball carrier for the Bears and should enter preseason camp as the favorite to claim the starting tailback spot after seeing part-time duty there a year ago, playing in all 11 games and starting four. Davis gained all his yards in five games, picking up 79 yards vs. Southwest Baptist, 76 at Indiana State, 52 at Illinois State, 45 at Oklahoma State and 23 at UNI. He was converted to tailback last year after seeing all his action at fullback the previous two years. He gained 30 yards rushing in the Maroon/White Spring Game last April. He played in nine games as a sophomore. Davis carried three times for 11 yards against Southeast Missouri State and also had a kickoff return for 17 yards in the finale at Western Illinois. He played in all 11 games in 2004, mostly on special teams.
