I was 2-2 last week. Western and Furman failed to show me something. ETSU survived an amazing performance to stay undefeated. After this week, my power rankings are as follows:

1) East Tennessee State - took a licking and kept on ticking
2) Mercer - Hail, Hail to the Mercer Bears, the champions of the Lamb Bowl.
3) Samford - had absolutely nothing to be ashamed of
4) VMI - looked dominant again
5) NottaQuitta - chillaxing this past week
6) Furman - got manhandled by Mercer the Merciless
7) A Citadel - also chillaxing this past week
8) Wofford - Con Man Conklin finds a way to lose again
9) Western Carolina - Kerwin Bell may be a hell of a coach, but has yet to win here

This Week's Games
Wofford @ East Tennessee State - Bucs show no quarter against a team who chickened out last spring
Western Carolina @ NottaQuitta - Can Kerwin Bell get the Catamounts to play with a chip the size of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on their shoulders? Probably not.
VMI @ A Citadel - Keydets retain the Silver Shako for one more year
Samford @ Mercer - Bears look to be for real in a barnburner

Side note: also noted that two former SoCon powers faced off Thursday night with App State pulling away late. Aren't some of you glad that Marshall lost?

Prediculations later in the week…Picked all I picked correctly last week. Prediculated margins were pretty close, as were scores, except for ETSU @ Samford. FUBeAR really overestimated ETSU’s Defense. I guess the adjustment to a step up from 3 games vs. far inferior competition surprised them a bit.

Power Ranking

1) Mercer
2) Furman
3) Chattanooga
4) ETSU
5) Samford
6) VMI
7) WCU
8) Wofford
9) Just One of Many Citadels

Power ranking:
1) ETSU
2) Chattanooga
3) Mercer
4-9) everybody else

This week:
Wofford at ETSU - The Terrier offense was clicking in the first half, but forgot that football consists of 2 halves. I never pick against my team so a see a negative 21 point win for the Terriers

WCU at Chattanooga - Mocs roll 35-20

VMI at the Citadel - The Battle for the Corn Dog Hat. The Citadel will come ready to play, but the Keydets prevail in a closer than expected 31-28 win.

Samford at Mercer - I never know how to predict a Samford game. If they are hot they can beat anybody. If they are not, they can lose to anybody (except inexplicably against Wofford). The Bullpups win in a shoot-out 49-45.

Georgia Southern doesn't need that since they self-destructed.

I have multiple theories, some of which are informed by information that is not public knowledge. Let's get through the season first. It could go many different ways (including him staying another season or two to put out the fire he started), and I'm not going to speculate about some of the weirder ones out loud.

Massey is predicting an Alien abduction, but Sagarin, more realistically, projects Uncle Jerry puts a contract (not the good kind) out on Coach C. after they lose to Mercer on 10/23 giving them a 1-6 record for the season & Wofford will have won only 2 of their last scheduled 16 games.

1) East Tennessee State – Never gave up; it was a crazy game but they pulled it out; champs do that; Crazy factoid about that ETSU/Samford game…there was four TDs and a FG scored in the last 6:27 of regulation! That’s three times the points that Furman has scored in its last two whole games:D
2) Mercer – They were by far the biggest surprise of the week; are they that good or does Furman suck that bad? I mean more than they usually do?
3) Samford – If they get consistent and beef up their D, watch out; but don’t hold your breath; they are a one trick team; sometime it's enough, sometimes not
4) Chattanooga – Idle this week, but their trajectory has been good; I expect them to move up
5) VMI – They just keep winning; it ain’t always pretty, but it doesn’t have to be; as far as Kent goes, they are seriously improved; so I am "slightly" less disgusted with the Keydet’s game there; I think the biggest thing is that they are getting used to winning again
6) Furman – It looks like NC St is for real; but that doesn’t matter because Furman looked bad again; I couldn’t bear to watch much of it; about 1 in 6 of their completed passes, were completed, to Mercer…4 INTs, LOL; the only reason they are here is there other two wins, so they have some talent, but they are stuck in a downward trend
7) The Citadel – I was hesitant to put us here with only one DII win, but our curve definitely went up the week prior; this week should see if it continue upward or sink back down
8) Wofford – They are on a downward spiral it seems; I thought they would get out of their funk, but nope
9) Western Carolina – It always looks like they are just about to pull one out, and then they falter

This Week's Games

Wofford @ East Tennessee State – I can’t see Wofford being very effective against the Bucs; ETSU hasn’t beaten Wofford since their return, but that should change this year – 38-20

Western Carolina @ Chattanooga – This could get ugly – 45-20

VMI @ THE Citadel – As much as I want to pick my Dogs, I don’t think we are there yet; hopefully our D has been working hard on fixing some of their issues; if we can get our O going, we will at least keep our D from getting worn out, that might help - 35-32

Samford @ Mercer – Can Samford get a lead and hold it? Could be a crazy game; but I think Mercer will play keep away ball control and it may be more of a lower scoring affair than folks think – 28-24

I can't see Wofford's offense being fast-paced enough to pose a problem for ETSU. Against Samford, however, about every 5th play one of their players would inexplicably wallow helplessly in agony on the turf while the clock would stop for the injury.
Sure hope none of those kids had any career-ending injuries, and I don't think so because the Bucs' trainers must be miracle workers the way they revived these players on the sidelines. LOL!

Broke: Wofford's offense isn't good enough to go toe-to-toe with ETSU
Woke: Wofford defense isn't good enough to go toe-to-toe with ETSU

We aren't good right now on defense. A lot of folks are making hay about our injuries being the deciding factor against VMI, or the fact that we went cold in the redzone, but the fact is, for the second time in three years a VMI running back (in an air raid offense) had a career high rushing against us, while their QB completed about 78% of their passes. Wofford football was pretty strong between 2007 to 2019 by stopping the running first (holding opponents to between 75-125 yards, pending on the opponent, obviously not including option teams), kind of like how we did against Elon in week one. But for whatever reason (injuries, new coordinators and coaches, COVID weirdness, or whatever), we haven't looked like that team over the last two weeks.

I'm not being a negative nancy when I say that I think ETSU will probably have their best offensive game against us since they brought back football. Yeah, Wofford's beat up, but our defense has some major adjustments to make. Our offense was fine moving up and down the field (even though I think ETSU's defense will be better than VMI), and I do think ETSU's defense will be a challenge, but I think the Wofford defense (whether due to injuries or otherwise) being not-good is going to be what puts us behind the 8 ball.

Ever since ETSU brought back football, Wofford has pretty much dominated (or at least controlled) the LOS. I don't see that happening this time around.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL OFFICIATING, LLC
2021 NCAA FOOTBALL RULES CHANGES
(Including Major Editorial Changes and Points of Emphasis)

Feigning Injuries (Rule 3-3-5-b)
Feigning an injury for any reason is unethical. An injured player must be given full protection under the rules, but feigning an injury is dishonest, unsportsmanlike, and contrary to the spirit of the rules. For questionable game action, an institution or conference has the option to consult the National Coordinator of Football Officials who would then facilitate a video review. After the review, the National Coordinator will communicate any findings with the Director of Athletics at the institution for further action.

FUBeAR will await the news of sanctions against the ETSU Football & Athletics program(s) regarding the events as described.

Also - be advised that Mercer’s D has many Players, almost all of them really, who are playing through multiple nagging injuries. Hamstring and groin tweaks have been prevalent, as have twisted ankles, and shoulder ‘stingers.’ Their grit and a lot of duct tape have enabled them, in all 3 games so far, to leave the field for a play or 2 and return to full action via tightening the tape, etc. Given that, I could foresee frequent stoppage of play this Saturday to scoop up a Bear from the field for such adjustment & rapid return to action. Brave warriors, each of them.

I would hope Samford reported it & I would expect absolutely nothing to be done about it.

That said…I think the NCAA needs to take a think on the rules on how/when the ball is set for play. Remember all 11 pursue the ball on D. Offensive Players away from the ball don’t have to & don’t do that. FatBoyz (my peeps) don’t do that. The QB doesn’t do that. So the O can have 8ish guys set for the next play while all D Players may be moshed up on the sideline. I get the advantage that gives the O & I’m an O guy - but it’s not really ‘fair’ if that word can be applied. Really, it creates bad football, IMO. Because of the mechanics of the game, the D just does not have the same oppty to get lined up as the O does, if the O is playing at hyper-speed & not substituting.

Like I said - something to look at rule-wise. Until then, D Players need to become much better actors.

Western Carolina - 21
#19 Chattanooga – 35 – The Catamounts are improved, but the Mocs win this one at home behind a strong running game.

#22 VMI – 28 – Anything can happen in this rivalry, but the Keydets been playing well and the Bulldogs have not. I’ll take VMI in a tight game.
The Citadel - 27

Wofford - 14
#14 ETSU – 24 – I think the Terriers struggles continue and the Bucs win at home.

Samford - 31
#33 Mercer – 35 This could be a good game. The Bulldogs will play spoiler to someone this year, but I’m going with a Bears win at home, though it may be closer than some think.

1.) ETSU (0)

Samford, as usual is talented and dangerous. They could certainly beat Mercer if the offense goes in and performs well as we all know the Bulldogs can put up a bunch of points quick. On the other hand if the Bears defense is able to get some 3 and outs, Samford's D will wear down, particularly if Mercer has some long time eating drives. With Hatcher's offensive style if the opposing defense shuts them down, it doesn't take long to get a 3 and out and the defense gets no rest. I picked the Bears in a close game, but wouldn't be too surprised to see it go the other way.

The Bulldogs will beat some good SoCon teams this year. If history is any indication they will also loose some head scratchers.

As disappointed as I was watching Samford lose to Martin, I really don't think Martin is that bad.

FUBeAR had high hopes for improvement from the Cats this year & saw some vs. EKU & Samford, but when I watched the game @ G-W, I thought I must’ve selected the wrong date/year in my ESPN Replay app. It was a poop show from kickoff to final whistle (actually, until I couldn’t stomach watching anymore BAD Football)…by both Teams really. I guess the Cats out-pooped the Dogs in the latter stages. I couldn’t bear to watch all of it. Anyway, I still think we’ll see a better WCU product this year, but taking 4 steps backward is not the way. Mocs Choo Choo steamrolls on Sat…and they, mistakenly, come away thinking they now have a multi-dimensional Offense. They don’t.

VMI is not playing as well as they did in the Spring. Just One of Many Citadels is not playing as well as Burke HS. Pretty sure they would be better off dressing those Bulldogs on D on Sat., but they will be worn out from their Friday night game against the 4-1 Simmons Iron Horses. Expect the corn dog, or whatever other phallic symbol that’s supposed to be on top of that metal bucket, will be limp before halftime. Roos hop all over the bellhops.

Routs would be 3 for 3 with this one, but based on the plethora of catastrophic injuries suffered by the SeaFelons vs. Samford last week, I’m surprised ETSU hasn’t ‘opted out’ yet. Oh, sorry, that’s a Woffraud tactic. Anyway, I do expect the ETSU D to be a little sluggish in this one and I think, like Chatt will after their rout of WCU earlier in the day, that ETSU came away from last week thinking, mistakenly, that THEY have a multi-dimensional Offense. They don’t, BUT they want to prove that they do & that keeps them from routing the Teary-ers…but they still win it in good fashion. Then, the BIG question becomes, will Woffraud ‘opt out’ from facing Furman the following week…stay tuned!

This is the big one this week, SoCon fans, and the only one that FUBeAR expects to be competitive. Mercer was dominant against Point, surprisingly competitive against Alabama, and rock-solid against my Paladins. Samford was pretty good against TTU, but not as solid as Furman with not taking control of that game until late in Q3. Then the pups pooped themselves losing an early 3 score lead and falling to a good UTM Team. Then, a shaky, narrow win over a not (yet) good WCU club, followed by last week’s lose-the-lead 3x, including a 2 score lead meltdown loss.

So, on one sideline, we have Dominant, Competitive, and Rock-Solid. On the other sideline, we have Pretty Good, not solid; Quite Poopy; Shaky, and Melted Down. FUBeAR’s decision seems kind of obvious. Bears maul ‘em (not really maul ‘em on the scoreboard, but figuratively speaking…y’know).

I dunno, Sheil Wood was the DC at the time, probably interviewed for the job, and was the son of one of the higher up deans at the college. We can play the "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon" game for any of this stuff, but I don't buy it.

I think RJ needs to retire though. No one needs to be in the same position for around two decades.

the open week definitely helped, great game plan on defense, the way the defense rushed six against Ironside that first period. 3 VMI turnovers the last 19 minutes were a killer, too.

ETSU 27, Wofford 21 Final

First ETSU win vs. Wofford since 1998, first time ETSU went 5-0 since 1969.

1) Wofford played better this week
2) ETSU is really good and I'm proud of our effort (losing to them on the road by 6 when it's a record crowd for them and they're at their peak, consider where we are as a program...I'll take it)
3) Citadel sort of confirmed to me that VMI is kind of overrated.

May be a bit. But it could be we just had a couple bad games as well and are better than that. I've noticed a nice uptick in quality of execution the last two games. We will know even more after next week.

Burke Bulldogs were a great addition to the bellhops today.

Enjoy the pickle on a bucket trophy. Y’all earned it!

Which is surprising as it's almost the same as they had last spring when they played fairly well. But hard to judge with the spring weirdness. But I know that was our best game for defense to date.

VMI 49 - CIT 7

Nice call on the total.

I honestly do not understand what Samford sees in Chris Hatcher.

Reign of Terrier
October 2nd, 2021, 08:30 PM
Hatcher's been at Samford 7 years, has had more NFL prospects on his team than most teams in the FCS, and yet has 0 playoff wins, 0 conference titles, and he's won like 55% of his games.

Like, okay, when the offense is clicking it's beautiful, but his defenses are notoriously awful and so fundamentally unsound that whenever they do get into the playoffs or play a team that's playoff worthy that isn't Wofford, they get stomped. And if they don't get stomped, they play a basketball game score and it looks embarrassing for them. It's not an exaggeration to say we'd think they were a .500 or mediocre program if Hatcher wasn't perfect against Wofford.

VMI's defense ain't great.

today they gave up way too many plays of 10+ yards.....(they were good enough on sept. 25) Citadel ran unbalanced line a lot, VMI didn't counter/adjust.

Y’know…if you hit .750, you are surely a Hall of Famer and maybe the greatest player in the history of the game.

Besides that, I’m glad to learn the blind squirrel population of ChuckTown is still thriving.

Any chance we might see a Mercer Player win a SoCon PoW Award, for the 1st time this season, this week…???

Fred Davis, Mercer RB - 28 carries, 276 rushing yards, 5 TD’s, 1 Rec, 22 Receiving Yds, 298 Total Yds.

nah…I’m sure a Samford or ETSU Player had more impressive stats.

Dnag, FUBeAR was trying to be nice. I guess I was not appropriately enthused about CIT’s 3rd D1 win in the past 701 days. I guess 1 win every 234 days is certainly something to CROW about!

That's not bad.

Another candidate is The Citadel's QB Jaylan Adams

28 Carries for 188 yards and a TD, 2-4 passing for 114 yards and a TD, 302 total yards of O.

Both players are deserving of the award, however if it were up to me 5TD's would trump 2TD's. Hopefully neither play that way against the Mocs!!

Fred Payton, Mercer QB, threw for 161 yards and a TD, ran for 38 yards, and caught a 52 yard pass. 251 total yards, but a hat trick in ways of advancing the ball. Shoulda let him kick an XP. :)
