Western Illinois is in for a tough time in 2008 when NDSU and SDSU come in. The Leathernecks had a pretty good program going on there (SHSU fans can't wait to renew our series) and it would not surprise me to see them bounce back, they're just surrounded by so many good teams in the Gateway, that it is a tough mountain to climb.

MACOMB -- Western Illinois coach Don Patterson remembers the last time his Leathernecks were picked to finish fifth in the Gateway Conference, then wound up winning the league title instead.

It was 2000, the last time until this year that the Gateway had just seven teams, the ninth-year coach recalled. The 2000 champions leaned on a strong returning rusher and Buchanan Award candidate on defense, the same as this year.

Patterson says there was even construction around Hanson Field back then, nodding toward new stands going up now for the Aug. 30 home opener.
