UNI deserves higher ranking.

This week's poll article: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-2-top-25-results-3/

Kind of surprised to see Jacksonville St hanging so low still. They started at #12 in the preseason, split their FBS games, and have dropped to #18 after week 2. Maybe our favorite sandbagging JSU fan is getting to the voters??? ;)

Pretty boring week other than that. VMI took a big tumble for an FBS loss but it was a 50 point loss to a MAC team so understandable. The "power conferences" seem to be rising to the top in the OOC part of the season with the Big Sky, CAA, and MVFC taking 14 of the top 16 spots. 11 of the top 16 (and 10 of the top 13) are just the Big Sky and MVFC. That won't be sustainable as those teams start to cannibalize each other in the conference season so should be some opportunities for teams currently in the lower teens and 20s to move up into the top 10 as we progress through the conference season.

I guess I am slightly harder on UC-Davis and slightly lighter on Central Arkansas. Chatty, IMO deserves to be ranked as well as Rhode Island, considering Chatty played APSU well and beat tUNA with some margin. Rhode Island's win at Albany earned votes considering how NDSU handled Albany.

Other than conference bias, someone please explains #20 Monmouth to me?

If the Hawks were still in the NEC with a 1-1 record and a 3-pt win at Fordham, they wouldn't get a single vote. Fordham? The Rams are just 6-10 since 2019.

Preseason Ranking and after Week 1
Sacred Heart - what resume did the Hawks had that was that much more impressive than SHU heading into the season? NEC preseason #1 and Walter Payton Award hopeful Julius Chestnut. Defending NEC Champs Sacred Heart were 3-2 in the spring, including a 19-10 loss at Delaware in the playoffs. And opened week 1 with a shutout of Bucknell, yet remained unraked heading into week 2 while Monmouth only dropped to a few spots.

After 2 Weeks
Duquesne is 1-1 vs. two FBS teams and can't break into the top-25? After week 1, a Patriot League win at UConn was good enough for a Holy Cross ranking, but a NEC win vs. Ohio isn't enough.

Probably because a good portion of the voters realize that despite the FSU head on a spike in front of our library that Grass is still our coach and this team is a bigger threat to themselves than they are a team of any significant worth.

If you're looking at only this season you have a point. I still have Monmouth ranked because of preseason bias since they had a good spring that included nearly knocking out the eventual national champion in the first round of the playoffs.

We had a discussion in last week's poll thread about whether you should still use preseason bias in your poll ballots after the preseason poll and different voters have different philosophies but for me I give my preseason bias diminishing weight until week 6 or so and try to ignore it completely thereafter. So after week 2 it still holds a good amount of weight with me unless the team in question has proven it wrong at this point. Monmouth has been working toward proving it wrong though after getting boatraced by a below average FBS team in week 1 and barely squeaking by a middling Fordham in week 2 and the have dropped pretty considerably from where I had them in the preseason in my ballot.

FWIW I ranked Duquesne one spot ahead of Monmouth this week. xthumbsupx

I think it was just Tuesday last week since there were Sunday games last week. Pretty sure the deadline will be Mondays at noon ET going forward. There was an error in the initial email that was sent out Saturday night announcing that the poll was open saying the deadline was Tuesday but it was corrected with another email a few hours later.

My point exactly. NEC teams are playing against the bias every week. Sacred Heart had a very good spring season, has a Payton candidate, and played well at Delaware in the playoffs. SHU was NEC preseason #1 and should have had more hype heading to this season. Then scores a convincing win in week 1.

Duquesne beat SHU in the spring, but lost the rubber match in the NEC Championship. A solid team, but certainly not ranking worthy to start the season. Holy Cross comes in as defending PL champs (but didn't fair as well in the playoffs as SHU) and a win over UConn earns a ranking? The following week the Dukes beat a better FBS team, but no one notices.

Voters should be judging teams, and not conference labels. Shouldn't have to have NEC fans be the only ones to talk up their teams :(

FWIW I often rank more than 25 teams and I had Duquesne at 26. I thought about putting them in but I’m just not convinced. While it is probably NEC bias that kept them out there is some reason for it. As far as I’m aware The NEC has only one win in the playoffs recently and it was in a crazy weather game against Towson (Duquesne then got destroyed by SDSU). At this point it’s so hard to rank the last few spots and there are so many teams that have reasons to be ranked you can’t really discredit voters who look over an NEC team.

They are just outside of my top 25 (along with Duquesne). Maybe I'm being too harsh but I don't feel they deserve to be ranked solely because of one lucky play. If they don't catch the last second heave, or catch it but get tackled at the 5 yard line, would they still be ranked where they are with an 0-2 record?

Let's take Monmouth's non-conf resume "as is" this year and just put a NEC patch on their jerseys and they don't get the votes or ranking they are getting today!

2020 FCS Playoffs
Sacred Heart - 10
Delaware - 19

Monmouth - 15
Sam Houston St. - 21

Duquesne FCS Playoff History
2015 - L, 49-52 at William & Mary
2018 - W, 31-10 at Towson; L, 6-51 at SDSU

Does a Monmouth playoff win vs. Holy Cross carry that much more weight than a Duquesne playoff win over Towson? Again, MU never got this respect while in the NEC ...

I don't think anybody is arguing against your point. I actually am going to keep this in my mind for next week. You make a valid argument.

Any chance Sacred Heart had of getting ranked went out the window with their 17-6 loss to Bryant last Saturday. And your Duquesne argument would land better with me if you left out the "no one notices" comment with them. They got 45 votes so I'd wager that's at least 10 voters, and probably more like 15-20, had them in their top 25. Just because they weren't in a voters top 25 doesn't mean they didn't notice them. I currently have a list of 14 teams outside of my top 25 on a "Watch List" and I bet Duquesne is at least in that group for every voter that keeps one and didn't have them in their top 25.

Holy Cross and Sacred Heart both finished the spring ranked in the top 25 (Sacred Heart ranked higher I might add). Had Sacred Heart beat UConn or Ohio I'm sure they would've gotten into the top 25. Unlike those teams Duquesne had to come from completely off the radar. The good news for the Dukes is if they continue this trajectory and win the NEC they'll work their way well into the top 25 by season's end.

I saw it a little differently... if it was a hail mary I'd tend to agree with you but that looked like a play that could pretty plausibly happen at any point in the game. I thought it was more a great throw than a desperation heave. It was horrendous tackling by the FSU DBs though. You can reverse that hypothetical and say if that happens with 2 minutes left do you still not rank them? Missouri St took the lead on UCA with 29 seconds remaining so that's a pretty good comparison.

Here's a point that's separate from the last second touchdown:

We played like ass.

FSU just sucked more than we did.

Would all of the sucking in Tallahassee last Saturday explain the course of Tropical Storm Nicholas?

It didn't look like a typical hail mary, but when you have to go 59 yards to find the end zone on the last play of the game that's exactly what it is. FSU had either horrible coverage or a terrible defensive call to allow the receiver to get behind the defense at that moment of the game, coupled with the horrendous tackling you mentioned along with what looked like an embarrassing lack of hustle. JSU's performance against FSU was worthy of standing pat with where I had them the week before, as opposed to say UNI's performance against Iowa State in week 1 resulting in getting them a bump in my poll. If I had JSU at #20 after week 1, they would've been right around there this week as well. I didn't have JSU ranked after week 1, so for me they're still not ranked.

The play that Missouri State took the lead on was 26 yards out so I don't really think that's a similar situation. Even if they didn't score on that play they would have still had 29 seconds to move the ball 26 yards with all 3 timeouts left I believe, a much more manageable situation than having to get 59 yards on what you know is the final play.

So for me, I didn't have Jacksonville State in my poll for week 1, I had to add them in on week two.

Yeah, unfortunately, I couldn't vote for them this week either. Season is young.

Richmond is currently ranked primarily because of their 3-1 Spring record. Two of their wins were against Elon, the other against William and Mary. Both teams were struggling last Spring - the only reason either of them won a game is because they had to play one another. Richmond was 5-7 in 2019, 4-7 in 2018. They have won two games so far this season - 2 games they were expected to win against a mediocre MEAC team and hapless 2021 Lehigh. Now Richmond may be a very good team, but that remains to be seen. The Richmond @ Villanova game this Saturday will be the first test for both teams.
