After having the first tie for #1 ever in the AGS Poll between Weber and SHSU in Week 6 of the spring season I think this is the first time the #1 spot has been determined by a single point. Sam Houston, always a flair for the dramatic!

Also, a lot of matchups in former NC games in the first 7 spots that I don't remember noticing before either. I'm talking about specific back to back positions.
1-2
3-4
6-7

If EWU would have been flipped with UD it would have added one more.

I will be honest and say I don't remember looking at the poll (or even voting) that week in the spring. How was that handled in standings? Were both just #1 and then the next team after those two was #3?

UCA loses to an FBS team it lead at halftime that also beat us handily last year and we drop some spots....nice. xlolx

Time to prove ourselves against FCS competition. Missouri State at their house will be a good one! xthumbsupx

Moreover just a product of some teams with big FBS wins jumping you. We handily won our opener on the road at 7000 ft. and lost our spot. It will all wash out.

Correct. I closed the thread but I'll just take this opportunity to tell everyone that around the time of poll releases bumping ANY old poll result thread is highly inadvisable.

People say things like this fairly often. It isn't all about you.

BTW, trying to use a preseason poll as some sort of solid thing vs. after Week 1 is a bit silly too. If this were Week 8 you might have a least some decent footing to make this sort of a case.

Sammy gets 9 more first place votes but is not #1? Some of that Anti-Sam Houston bias is showing up in the data. Most everybody that posts their poll has them in the top 1-3. That tells me that those who choose not to show their votes know it will come under scrutiny...xcoffeex

Actually, previous data suggests that it is the same 10-15 people that (almost) always post their poll, and the others typically do not. I don't think their not posting will have anything to do with shafting Sammy; however, in the interest of full disclosure:

Here's this week's poll article: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-1-top-25-results-3/

Kind of interesting to see Monmouth and Jacksonville St hammered pretty hard for FBS losses (although I contributed to JSU's big drop so this is self-criticism for likely overrating them in the preseason). Despite 9 of the top 12 teams being in the Big Sky or MVFC 10 conferences (if you count the WAC and ASUN separately) are represented in the top 25 this week.

Also kind of disappointing to see the number of voters still hanging down in the 50s. We were in the 80s and 90s for all of fall 2019. Hopefully it's just the Labor Day weekend doldrums and trying to get back into the swing of a real fall football season after a year off and it'll start picking back up.

I have no problem with that whatsoever. If I wasn't a Sam Houston homer I probably would have done the same thing. But I think putting Sammy anywhere outside the top 2 or 3 is hard to justify.

I think you're manufacturing that bias. If you look at the data you'll see that SH got 629 points amongst the 27 ballots where they weren't #1 which averages out to 23.3 points per ballot. That means they averaged being between #2 and #3 on all ballots where they weren't #1.

I rarely if ever criticize on week 1, but either my poll is a genius or everyone else is seeing something I am not. I told Thumper/IBY/Winterborn/POD, to keep an eye on Montana for their Washington game and they did not disappoint. You'd be hardpressed to keep them out of the top 2, but that is just me.

Same thought here as well and I am really disappointed by the showing because we have always had a very high percentage of people eligible to vote placing a ballot in. Out of 99 voters, we have a little over 1/2 now as opposed to 80-90%?

As you said, I sure hope it is a one time thing and we start making our way back to some better numbers with the voters.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. But not just for SHSU. Same thing for Montana. They got more first place votes than JMU, but are behind them. So it is one of many things; people who did not vote them #1 actually voted for where they thought they ought to be (a bit lower), or those voted them #1 have them a bit high. It is an interesting phenomena and appears to highlight some possible conference partisan placement. Or it could just be where folks think they ought to be. Too early in the season to get cynical though. It will come out in the wash.

Maybe I'm wrong and USD is better than I think this year but based on that game I think KU would be a bottom half of the MVFC type team right now. So I didn't give USD much credit for almost beating them.

I was also surprised to see JSU and Monmouth drop so much. I decided not to punish them for the fbs loss. Looking back on it I probably should have a little because both teams didn't look too good but I still think both teams should be ranked a little higher than they are.

Its refreshing to not see 99%of the votes go to one team.

How does NDSU look post Trey Lance? I haven't been following lately.

I'm going to get a lot of hate here and say that I think there are still things that need to be proven for Montana. If you looked at the UW vs Montana stats, you would assume that Montana took a licking. Okay, maybe that is dramatic, but the point still stands. I'm not saying they arent good, but I need to see more before I think they are the top dog.

If you looked at the UW vs Montana stats, you would assume that Montana took a licking. Okay, maybe that is dramatic, but the point still stands. I'm not saying they arent good, but I need to see more before I think they are the top dog.

NDSU has a lot of work to do. Oline an play calling.

Maybe I'm wrong and USD is better than I think this year but based on that game I think KU would be a bottom half of the MVFC type team right now. So I didn't give USD much credit for almost beating them.
Wasn't it just 2019 when Indian State took Kansas to the brink, and maybe even down to the final play and then went 5-7 while also losing to a PFL team the next week?

USD is the same program that took Kansas State to a last second FG from beating them and then went 4-7

Kansas is not exactly the best barometer for judging a "FBS upset" type game. Kansas would not be a top half Valley team. That's not even me being "VALLEY THE BEST" by any stretch. I legitimately don't believe Kansas is a top half Valley team. SDSU, NDSU, SIU, UNI and UND are all better without a doubt in my mind. I also think MSU and USD are every bit their equal (50/50) type games.

This.

Personally, for me, as long as Tyler Roehl is the OC, and NDSU does not have an NFL caliber QB, he is going to be a hinderance for this team. The team can only run so many jet sweeps, dives, and RPO before the defense knows what is coming their direction. When they get the TEs involved and they chip the DEs/LBs, it opens up the playbook that much more.

Here's this week's poll article: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-1-top-25-results-3/

Kind of interesting to see Monmouth and Jacksonville St hammered pretty hard for FBS losses (although I contributed to JSU's big drop so this is self-criticism for likely overrating them in the preseason). Despite 9 of the top 12 teams being in the Big Sky or MVFC 10 conferences (if you count the WAC and ASUN separately) are represented in the top 25 this week.

it just depends on the loss

Surely missed the target here.We will see, but my poll almost always are very accurate. This might be the first time I truly disagreed with the aggregate. Knowing what Montana "did in the spring" and knowing who they had coming back, I told the guys at the tailgate to watch for them this year. It's really difficult to focus on 40-50 teams including the Valley and NDSU but both Montana schools and Chatty I was wanting to see. Week 1 gets a general pass, within reason, but let's see what UC Davis leading upto Weber State game.

I guess I am one of the only ones who keeps a spreadsheet. It is literally impossible for me to miss a team. I keep my 25 and about 5-7 others who are close each week. I will copy and paste them into the next weeks and drop and drag them so if anyone is bumped in or out they are right there. Takes a few more minutes, but I get it done in about an hour each week. Including "thinking" time. I guess a quick way to do it would be to download the "How They Fared" spreadsheet and just use that to cross check your previous. It has the top 40 to look at. I keep each weeks of mine for obvious reference. Hard to miss anyone that way unless a team was totally overlooked. Then you just have to use your noggin.

We’ll find out soon enough, but probably about as bad as CSU. Which means their game this week should be an epic matchup. But if Vandy handles CSU then maybe ETSU should be #1.

That's pretty much what I do too, drag and drop on a spreadsheet. Had ETSU on my spreadsheet but somehow skipped them when doing the poll. My problem was when I put Holy Cross in at 20 I cut and paste 6 teams down one spot. I ended up with 26 teams in the poll so skipping over them still left 25 to enter. It's happened before where I skip a team while doing the poll but it was an easy catch because after 24 I had hit the end of my poll so I know I missed a team somewhere.

You ranked UNH at 24 in the Pre-Season Poll, they won on the road vs a CAA opponent week 1. Any thoughts on why you dropped them from the Top 25? (I'm not necessarily advocating for UNH - I didn't have them ranked week 1 or Pre-season) I see them ranked Week 3, if they can beat Towson at home this week and @ Lafayette next.

Do you really think Yale at your #10 is better than your #11-#25 teams? What are you seeing in them?

I was much more impressed with Yale making the ORV without having stepped foot on the field. I am guessing voter(s) that did not vote in the preseason poll.

I always forget to post my poll until mid-week and then never post. My week 1 poll is usually a dramatic 180 from my preseason poll. I've started to weigh results early on more and more each year. I also don't slot vote, so a team could be top 10 one week and out of the poll the next week. Or vice versa. I also make sure to rank at least 35-40+ teams to make sure I've included as much as possible. Here's my week 1 top 25:

1: South Dakota State Jackrabbits
2: Montana Grizzlies
3: Eastern Washington Eagles
4: Sam Houston Bearkats
5: North Dakota State Bison
6: UC Davis Aggies
7: North Dakota Fighting Hawks

20: Southeastern Louisiana Lions
21: Villanova Wildcats
22: Central Arkansas Bears
23: Austin Peay Governors
24: Wofford Terriers
25: New Hampshire Wildcats

Yes James Madison is a tad low, but with Maine and Weber State coming up, they'll have plenty of chances to move. With all the impressive week 1 wins, it's hard to reward a win over Morehead State.

Spot on. I just do not understand how or why it is hard to copy and paste the list over and just alpha sort in another column or something to make sure you have everyone would want in your ballot. Hell once you have the 30 teams start placing them next to the numbers and see how it looks, change em' around etc.

If you are not using a spreadsheet you are just making it way harder on your noggin than it needs to be.

If you only copy the "name" column off the HTF and alpha sort that in one column and then alpha sort your numbered list it is an easy double check to compare them too and make sure. I don't think I was being very clear on that one.

Seems our methods are virtually identical: Copy my poll plus other teams under consideration from last week; move over a couple columns and paste; drag and drop teams around - sometimes several sessions depending on block of time available when I'm looking at it; come back to it again later to take a fresh look; submit; enter AGS rankings behind after the poll comes out to see if I need to take a closer look at anyone; repeat. I've got one spreadsheet with a new tab each year that starts with a copy of my last poll from the previous year. I seldom have to type a team's name.

Are we still sending the poll to Massey for the composite rankings?

Yes, did that Tuesday but ElCid beat you for the reminder...and I forget to go rep him for it so thanks for that reminder. xlolx

Yeah, I know what you mean. I actually built a template I reuse each week just because I was afraid of doing something like that. I keep each weeks poll on one spread sheet tab. It gets to all the way to column IH by the end of the season. I put the AGS poll each week right next to mine to see if I am out to lunch anywhere as well. I'm a spreadsheet addict. I really need professional help.xrotatehx

Sounds like quite the spreadsheet. I should share with you the spreadsheet I use. Currently at 29 Tabs.

Yikes! I have a set routine each week on my process. I keep an eye on the scheduling rating as well I use both Massey and Sagarin to see who has the harder and easier schedules. Just in general terms as these are arguably accurate/inaccurate. Maybe we should start a Spreadsheet Anonymous.

sometimes several sessions depending on block of time available when I'm looking at it; come back to it again later to take a fresh look; submit; enter AGS rankings behind after the poll comes out to see if I need to take a closer look at anyone; repeat.

I like to do this too, come back to my poll later at least once for a fresh look. I also found it helps to accept that I’m never going to be 100% happy with my poll, otherwise I’ll look at it until…..

I blame my job as an engineer as why I have so many tab. Each conference has its own tab with each team having the full schedule. Ranking tabs FCS, FBS, DII, DIII, NAIA records.

I always forget to post my poll until mid-week and then never post. My week 1 poll is usually a dramatic 180 from my preseason poll. I've started to weigh results early on more and more each year. I also don't slot vote, so a team could be top 10 one week and out of the poll the next week. Or vice versa. I also make sure to rank at least 35-40+ teams to make sure I've included as much as possible. Here's my week 1 top 25:

1: South Dakota State Jackrabbits
2: Montana Grizzlies
3: Eastern Washington Eagles
4: Sam Houston Bearkats
5: North Dakota State Bison
6: UC Davis Aggies
7: North Dakota Fighting Hawks
8: Southern Illinois Salukis
9: East Tennessee State Buccaneers
10: James Madison Dukes
11: Furman Paladins
12: Holy Cross Crusaders
13: Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens
14: Virginia Military Institute Keydets
15: Missouri State Bears
16: Northern Iowa Panthers
17: Weber State Wildcats
18: Montana State Bobcats
19: Sacred Heart Pioneers
20: Southeastern Louisiana Lions
21: Villanova Wildcats
22: Central Arkansas Bears
23: Austin Peay Governors
24: Wofford Terriers
25: New Hampshire Wildcats

Yes James Madison is a tad low, but with Maine and Weber State coming up, they'll have plenty of chances to move. With all the impressive week 1 wins, it's hard to reward a win over Morehead State.

They beat Morehead State. That's why they're 10. If they played Morehead State 11 times, they would not rise above that spot, unfortunately. I stated very specifically the poll is heavily slanted towards results, with some tradition/strength returning considered. Their opponent is the equivalent of a crappy D2 school. Get some legitimate D1 games under their belt and they'll have no problem rising to the top of the rankings. All the teams above them had far more impressive week 1 results. Sorry not sorry.

where did you have them in the preseason poll?

What I remember is they were up 24 to 3 in the third quarter against the eventual national champion in the semi final, Jacquez Ezzard pretty much took over that game from that point.

Been using one since I started voting in the AGS poll in 2004.

Even with Ezzard’s efforts, if not for a kickoff and a bobbled pass that both bounced Sam Houston’s way JMU would’ve been in the natty. Bearkats still had to score TD’s to take full advantage and kudos to them for doing so, but without those two lucky bounces they don’t win. That’s why I have JMU above Sam Houston in my poll.

We are going to roll Valpo, but it’s not going to tell us a damn thing. I’ve been thinking about my poll more and I’m not sure we’re top 5 right now, more like towards the bottom of the top 10.

Valpo lost by 18 to an NAIA last weekend....granted it was a road game so points swing there (who the **** plays at an NAIA?)

If they keep it within 50, barring NDSU really pulling off the gas (which Entz isn't know for doing when he has the chance) it should be looked at IMO.

Why, does the result from the win over UNLV go away? Every team above them has a better resume at this point so it isn't something that can't be seen as a fairly logical conclusion so far. A win over CWU sure won't bolster EWU I would bet the farm on that one.

Each voter has their own method and that's fine but I tend to take my preseason bias and hold onto it until I'm proven wrong or it just gets diminishing weight until we get 5 or 6 games in and I try to leave it completely behind at that point. I had JMU at #2 in the preseason and only dropped them to #3 last week since, IMO, they did what a top 3 team should do to a team like Morehead St. But you certainly can't justify them being ranked that high solely on a win against Morehead St.

Whether you toss your preseason rankings out after week 1 or hold onto them for a few weeks we should all end up pretty close to the same spot by mid-October anyway IMO.

They were #3, I believe. Once again, I never slot vote, ESPECIALLY after the preseason poll. I think they are worthless and just basically a re-ranking of the final one from the previous year. Cupcakes are not good for you when you have only played cupcakes. They're merely irrelevant games to take minimal reaction from.

So next week EWU will fall like a rock because they play Central Washington?

I thought you fools were smarter than that. James Madison didn't fall like a rock. They were placed there because teams above them had better wins. EWU, NDSU, SDSU, Delaware, etc won't drop for that very reason. THEY ALREADY HAVE BETTER WINS. A resume is a consistent build. So even if teams play weak competition in week 2, they'll still have the other result on their resume. Everyone votes for different reasons, but if a whole bunch of teams start the season with very impressive wins and then another team just beats Sarah Lawrence, I'm going to wait until they play an actual team before I deem them worthy of a solid ranking.

Basically, you're all focusing on the wrong thing. You think I am punishing playing cupcakes. However, it's just the opposite. My focus is on impressive results. I rank based on how impressive a team is been. If your only game is against a hapless team, you have to hope everyone else fails to be able to look good. As games go on, those irrelevant games disappear, but until relevant games appear, teams simply can't impress me yet.

Sammy gets 9 more first place votes but is not #1? Some of that Anti-Sam Houston bias is showing up in the data. Most everybody that posts their poll has them in the top 1-3. That tells me that those who choose not to show their votes know it will come under scrutiny...xcoffeex

I usually don't post my top 25, mainly because there are always posted polls that closely resemble mine (i probably post mine 2-3 times a season). This thread would be hard to decipher, if every week there were 100+ Top 25s posted.

Although you'll have to take my word for it, I had Sammy at #2, SDSU at #1 on the strength of the Jacks impressive win over CSU. I also had JMU #3, NDSU #4 and #5 U of MT based almost entirely on their win over FBS Preseason #20 Washington. But after only one game, switching this top 5 teams around in almost any order could be in the realm of the reasonable.

As has already been posted in this Thread, I don't think moving JMU lower than 5 was reasonable. I'm no fan of JMU scheduling lower tier Pioneer or NEC opponents who are willing to repeatedly come to Bridgeforth Stadium for an annual butt-kicking. However, they only have one such game this season (frequently they've had 2) and they play Eastern Carolina and Weber St. the next two OOC. Then they get into an eight game conference schedule. Winning by 50+ over legitimate FCS "cupcakes", is no reason to drop a team more than 5 places. Particularly when virtually every top team plays at least one similar opponent.

FSU will be lucky to win 2 games.

Notre Dame almost lost to Toledo.

We had 13 penalties for 111 yards and Coopers stats on the season are as follows:
34 of 72 (47.2%)
330 Yards, 2 TDs

59 of those yards being the hail mary touchdown.

Blistering.

Grass will take whatever this team is capable of and squander it like always.

I still think we miss the playoffs.

Beating any ACC team is an accomplishment any year. So sorry to say I'll have JSU in the back half of my Top 25. Yes JSU has a very tough schedule, but that's why every year 4 loss teams, and even some years 5 loss teams, make the playoffs. You're probably right, they are at best 50-50 to make the playoffs. However considering every year a handful of auto bids are not ranked, not making the payoffs doesn't necessarily mean a team should not be ranked at season's end.

So congratulations to JSU for a great win. It reflects well on the FCS.
