As a freshman who didn’t start until the third game of the season, Edwards turned in one of the finest seasons ever by a quarterback of any age and at any level of college football ... the diminutive signal-caller became just the fifth player in NCAA Division I history (and only the second freshman) to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in the same season (the others are Morehead State’s David Dinkins - 1999; Clemson’s Woodrow Dantzler - 2001; Missouri’s Brad Smith - 2002 and Texas’ Vince Young - 2005 — Smith was the only other freshman to accomplish the feat) ... the southpaw went 13-0 as a starter in his initial collegiate campaign en route to Southern Conference and National Freshman of the Year recognition.
