I am interested to see how NDSU's offensive line does against what looked like a stout SHSU front 7.

Lots of playoff history with these 2 teams.

If I remember correctly (going from memory).
2011 National title game
2012 National title game
2015 semifinal game

JSU Playoff losses since 2014. Couldn’t find any playoff appearances within 5 years before that so stopped...

14’ SH-37, JSU-26
15’ NDSU-37, JSU-10
16’ YSU-40, JSU-24
17’ KSU-17, JSU-7. SH beat them the next week...
18’ MAINE!!!-55, JSU-27

now we may not be JMU or NDSU but against the same comp in the playoffs we have a much better track record and better program. Maine... Really?

Definitely looks like Sam Houston's defense, particularly the d-line, is better than past Sammy teams that have gone up against NDSU in the playoffs. Their offense seems very pedestrian though compared to those past teams.

This will be NDSU's first road playoff game in over 10 years so we'll see how they do in that scenario. Do Sam Houston's RBs catch balls out of the backfield? If so, tell their coaches to not look at the SDSU/NDSU game tape (it appears EWU didn't).

Yes, they can catch out of the backfield, but we don't seem inclined to use them in that fashion. We played extra conservative offensively in this game because we knew our defense could hold Monmouth down, but as a poster on katfans.com said, we were too conservative and it basically wore out our defense. It allowed the Monmouth offense to take advantage in the 4th quarter.

Monmouth isn’t terrible at all but you guys aren’t anywhere close to the same team offensively that you were early on in the season. All of your receivers looked gimpy and Schmid had his head up his ass. Defense is plenty good enough to shut down the Bison but the O better get in gear.

There's two national spots for next weekend's games... Sunday at 5PM and 8PM on the deuce. Don't ask me why but that's when ESPN chose to give the FCS playoffs their spots. The other two quarters will only be streaming so they kick off whenever.

After the display that Sam Houston put out there today, nobody in their right mind would pick the Bearkats. I voted NDSU.

Although I do agree the offense was non existent for most of the game, I have to tip my hat to the Monmouth defense. I think they are better than most people think. They had a top 10 defense vs the rush and a top 20 defense overall and they shut down the Kat O

My concerns with the Kat O at the moment are the number of injuries adding up on the OL. LT Eleseah Anderson went out hurt at some point yesterday which doesnt help an OL that is already missing several. Kat D can play with anyone. This next game will be the test.

After watching the Monmouth game, the Bearkats better get their offense started a little quicker. I know it's frustrating having your defense do so well only to have your offense struggle. If they can get their offense off to a good start then I think their defense will feed off that and the Kats will move onto the next round. If not...the Bison will.

Yep. The key is for the offense to at least have some long sustained drives. Our defense was out there for 96 plays in the hot sun. That is a recipe for disaster.

Offense is suspect? They have one bad offensive game (less than 300yds) against a good defense and the offense is suspect? They are missing three starting OL up front and they are still..

#9 in FCS total offense
#9 in FCS passing offense
#22 in FCS rush offense
#4 in FCS scoring offense

I am not going to say they didnt struggle more than we are used to seeing, but to say the offense is suspect is a reach.

We can afford to have an off day on offense and still have a chance to win with defense. That is what makes this team better than previous SH playoff teams...we had to outscore everybody in a shootout because our defenses were just plain bad since 2013.

Statistically Sam's run defense is elite so we'll see if that translates with an opponent like NDSU. That's pretty obviously the main key to the game. NDSU needs to run the ball effectively and Sam Houston needs to stifle the NDSU run game.

Yep, the Bison defense hasn't been particularly good all spring but they've been flat out awful in the redzone. It's actually pretty impressive that they're only allowing 18.4 points per game since they've yet to stop a team that's entered the redzone from scoring and are giving up TDs 3 out of 4 times to boot.

Monmouth isn’t terrible at all but you guys aren’t anywhere close to the same team offensively that you were early on in the season. All of your receivers looked gimpy and Schmid had his head up his ass. Defense is plenty good enough to shut down the Bison but the O better get in gear.
Biggest problem is by the end of the game we only had 1 o-lineman that started the year. The right side is basically 2 guys who weren’t on the 2 deep at the beginning of the season. If we don’t get some back by Saturday and our offense can’t stay on the field longer in will be a long day for the defense

That's how we were on the defensive line. We were playing with freshmen, walk-ons and converted O-linemen for the last month, and we didn't have our best three guys for the entire season.

All I know is your offense didn't look anything like it did the first two games of the spring — down four starters on the O-line is a good answer as to why. Your skill guys look beat up as well. Hopefully you find some juice on Sunday. Your plenty good enough to win it all if healthy.

The offense is beat up for sure. I am not so sure that Schmid has been 100% healthy. Plus he took a pretty nasty hit at UIW and I think the coaches have pulled the reigns on him running as much. Ezzard is not 100% and Harvin hasnt been on the field hardly at all the last three games. But, the OL is the glaring issue right now.

Half his passes weren’t in the same zip code. Defense got tired celebrating every TFL like they won the super bowl. Sam looked gassed, Monmouth didn’t. Figured being warm woulda helped Sam.

Do the Bearkats have a lot of depth on the DL? How big are the LB’s? Curious as to how well they might hold up against our ground attack. I suspect you’ll have some success limiting it early, but we’ll be sticking with the run all game unless we are down 20+ points. I think that will be the key to the game, if SHSU can hold up for all 4 quarters. This will be the most your run D has been tested this year.

Sam also plays in a conference where running the ball isn't usually the go-to for the offenses (Nicholls being the exception and they absolutely destroyed them)

It's a grind it out team as opposed to the normal air it out team that Sam sees. Sam needs to look at the SDSU tape to see how to beat NDSU, NDSU needs to look at the Monmouth 2nd half.

One interesting fact though: Sam hasn't allowed a single rusher to go over 100 yards since opening week of 2019

Yeah, I was checking out their opponents run offenses and Nicholls is the only real elite running team they played averaging 263 rush yards per game on the season. They did hold them to 118 and Nicholls had 38 attempts despite that game being a blowout. Sam did hold SLU, Northwestern St, McNeese, and UIW all over 100 yards below their season average running the ball and for the most part those games weren't blowouts. However, to put it kindly, the defense played in the Southland outside of SH has been very questionable this spring. So maybe that's why these other teams have rushing averages that are so high and makes Sam's defense look better than they are??? We'll find out on Sunday.

Kats are now 14-0 at home in the playoffs, along with Keeler being 7-0 here (wins over Southeastern, Southern Utah, Colgate, Chattanooga, South Dakota, Kennesaw and Monmouth). He's a win away from tying his home record at UD, and I believe he's a win away from breaking the all time FCS Playoffs wins record. Bearkats are DEFINITELY due.

Kats are 1-5 against the Bison with four straight playoff loses, blowouts no less. But this might be the best SHSU team they've faced.

Something definitely has to give.

Similar situation in reverse (with CCU)...we played down there in September 2017, their first year in FBS. That whole week I heard about the SC heat and humidity and how our guys wouldn't be able to handle it (like we don't have humidity in the midwest xrolleyesx) and that they'd fade in the second half. Weather at kickoff was mid-80s with a dew point of ~70.

Depending on how wet, should favor the better passing team.

Oh, the people a Proctor and Gamble must hate you now for removing the stain maker...Yes we play in the Dome because southern Teams like you might catch a cold playing in the November snows in Fargo. I remember Ashland College back in the middle 80's at the old Dakota Field, it was an outdoor stadium for the people who are too young to remember, it was like 25 degrees at Kick-off, cloudy and the usual 15 to 20 mile an hour breezy from the North. By the end of the 1st quarter, there was not enough room around the portable heaters on the Ashland sideline for the players. It was ugly by half time.

Chinook winds keep Montana a lot warmer, they get a lot of snow but their winters are mild compared to Fargo. If we would have had an outside stadium the year JMU beat us at home in the playoffs, they would have needed body bags. I remember setting up for a tailgate once, -17 air temp with a breeze, hauled my generator to the game and by the time I got around to using it I couldn't even turn the thing over, had to put it in my truck with the heat on to loosen it up. Even at that temp, I was colder in Frisco when it was 25 once with snow, go figure.

Serious questions: Does Sam's team resemble in the type of defense run or offense used or have the ability to replicate the schemes the two teams who did beat NDSU this year?

I know NDSU will make adjustments to counter what those two teams did but is there any aspect of their (the two teams) games that the Bearkats can use that the Bison will have problems stopping?

I ask those questions because sometimes it's not about the more talented team but the matchups. Sometimes teams have problems stopping the pass and their opponents change their game plans from predominantly run to a mix of more pass to run.

Sometimes teams are weak at one CB spot and the other team takes advantage of it and that dominoes to defenses sending one more LB back to assist which opens up the run game.... you get the picture.

I can speak to one of them since we played both Sam and Southern Illinois. Match ups are always different, team-to-team, and each game takes on a life of it's own; but Sam Houston's front four is way better than Southern Illinois, from a personnel standpoint, and I would say Sam is much better overall defensively. We threw the ball well and scored 38 points on Sam, but it was a major chore doing it — Cole Kelley just played out his mind that night. SIU blitzed the crap out of us and got some hits on Cole, but we had guys wide open and could have run the ball all day had we needed to. We couldn't run it an inch on Sam, other than reverses and a couple of great individual efforts, and they were able to get pressure on Cole with just the front four.

Again, matchups are different, team-to-team, but Sam's front four is outstanding — as good as we've seen in years, and that's counting our FBS opponents. And I think their LBs are underrated and very good tacklers. The secondary is probably overrated in my view but very solid. SIU wasn't very good on defense at all (neither were we) — we could have scored 60 had we not fumbled at their five and had a bad snap lose big yardage and kill a drive early in the first half.

Some rain probably favors Sam because it should help their passing game. A lot of rain is probably a wash, no pun intended. But from what I saw last week vs Monmouth, if Sam's O-line situation doesn't improve (injuries), and the QB doesn't play better, it won't matter one way or the other. They'll have to hope it's another game like last week — play good defense and take advantage of opportunities.

I will say this is the best defense we have had since 2011. Now having said that, y'all have a big and physical line, which may have more success running the ball than some of our other opponents. I will say that obviously the Southland is not as weak as consistently stated on this forum. SELA who had a pretty average season in our league played toe to toe with a team that dominated NDSU. Matchups are exactly what matters and we have not matched up well with you guys. You can absolutely throw the ball on us, and if our offense does not put some sustained drives together i think by the 3rd quarter you will be moving the ball well on the ground.

I think our biggest improvement on the defensive side of the ball this year is our linebacker play, both guys run really well and are sure tacklers. Only worry is they are not the heaviest guys and NDSU has a running back that outweighs them by 30#'s.

SIU wasn't very good on defense at all (neither were we) — we could have scored 60 had we not fumbled at their five and had a bad snap lose big yardage and kill a drive early in the first half.

Ok. Having read that then I see three things:
Sam may have the advantage on the front four and overall defensively. I have seen their offense struggle to start but if their defense can keep them in it then the offense HAS to show up! Cole Kelley, a guy I've met personally here in Arkansas, is an SEC QB that got basically unused at Arkansas. He's a heck of a QB and SLU got a good one. If SHSU can get their QB and WRs going then I don't see them losing the game. I watched their defense the first half of their last game and it look STRONG. TFLs and sacks. But that offense just couldn't get the engine started. IF they can get it started early then I see a good win over a rebuilding Bison team...something they haven't had to do in a while...they just typically reloaded. (Yes, I would loved to have played them without Trey Lance... xlolx )

Is this directed to the Bison or the Bears? xlolx

This is accurate. Not a thing that I can argue with.

Yeah, from sacks and a -15 for bad shotgun snap. Non-QBs were 17 for 124, tailbacks were 12 for 65. Our direct running game worked just fine, we just don’t run it very much because don’t have to — we were 35-43 for 440 through the air, no reason to run.

LK2, In week one of AGS Poll two people voted Sammy Houston number 1, where you the other one?

I did not because I didn't vote, but certainly would have. I have concerns about their offense as it stands right now. They're good enough on defense.

We find out soon enough, Certainly the Bison wont be able to roll with the running game like they did against E Washington... that was just sick
