Bears picked sixth in Gateway

St. Louis — As two of only eight Missouri State football seniors, Gerald Davis and Marcus Colbert refuse to accept this as a building year for a young team.
And they definitely aren't bowing to the Gateway Conference preseason poll, which pegs the Bears for sixth in the seven-team league.
"A lot of people take our team for granted and don't expect us to do well," Davis said Tuesday during the conference's media day gathering. "We want to change that around and be one of the top contenders."
As Terry Allen begins his second season as Bears coach, he will be counting upon Davis and Colbert for leadership if there is to be improvement after last year's 2-9 record.
In the closest Gateway poll ever, Northern Iowa is favored by a slim margin over Illinois State and Youngstown State. The Panthers received 11 of 28 first-place votes and 166 points. Illinois State got seven first-place votes and 160 points, and Youngstown State collected nine first-place votes and 159 points.
