The Southwestern Athletic Conference's championship trophy will be renamed in honor of late Grambling coach Eddie Robinson.

Interim SWAC commissioner Duer Sharp made the announcement on Tuesday, as Robinson was remembered with a video during a preseason football banquet.

SWAC to honor Eddie Robinson

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Southwestern Athletic Conference interim Commissioner Duer Sharp said the conference will rename its football championship trophy as the Eddie Robinson Trophy and, in making that move, the award will also be re-designed.

The trophy could incorporate a bust of Robinson, who died in April. The SWAC will eventually choose from a selection of concepts from Jostens, Sharp said.

“That’s a great start. I don’t think there’s anyway we can repay him fully,” said Sharp, who said the Robinson family would be the guests of the SWAC during the championship weekend, with the championship game on Dec. 15. “That’s just a start.”

During the conference’s football media day Tuesday at the Sheraton, a moving video of Robinson followed a section of highlights of each SWAC team.

Grambling Athletic Director Troy Mathieu said the school plans on adding “Eddie” to “Robinson Stadium.” What’s more, he said Grambling players will wear a patch on their uniforms and that SWAC teams will have a helmet decal to honor Robinson this season.

Matthieu also said the school was considering other ways of remembering Robinson this season.
