My only two observations on this list:

1) No school that changed its nickname should be listed. Whether it was due to political pressure or whatever, stick with what you've got. Political correctness isn't an excuse.

2) If the Western Kentucky bloodclot can come in at #24, then there's no reason that "Terriers" shouldn't have gotten Wofford and Boston U listed somewhere.

What a freakin' joke! It's QUACKERS, fer cripes sake!:p

The Ivies have pretty vanilla nicknames, but there has to be a more deserving FCS team than this.

BTW, I hate Penn!xnodx ;) :p

Agreed...these are two that would seem to belong on a list like this one.

I guess I don't read enough mascot polls, but I've honestly rarely seen Coastal on one. Go us, I guess. :D

I have never heard his explanation for the name Tar Heels, and Wake isn't affiliated with the Baptist Church anymore. It never was, really, since there's no such body as "the Baptist Church." That's another story, though.

I don't like Elon's new mascot. Maybe they were going for a kind of WNBA vibe or something. Fighting Christians was way way way way way way better.

FCS is home to a number of good mascots, though. Appalachian Mountaineers is a little unimaginative, I know. But it just fits so well, anything else (except perhaps shiners...black bears...?) would seem contrived.

I know Stonybrook got in bit of jam when they switched to the Seawolves. No one asked the University Alaska which trademarked the Seawolf. I guess it got resolved-they are different colors.xlolx

39 - Southern Illinois University "Salukis"

It's imaginative, and one of collegiate sports' more captivating nicknames, although there are still folks who have no idea what a Saluki is. It's a dog which is probably related and looks similar to an Afghan hound. It is reputedly one of the world's oldest pure breeds, dating back to ancient Egypt (3600 B.C.)

Legend has it that southern Illinois became known as "Egypt" when an early 1800's drought in the northern part of the state caused a mass migration southward. It reminded folks of the stories told in the Book of Genesis in The Bible, when people from nearby drought-stricken lands went to Egypt to buy corn. It makes sense. The southernmost town in Illinois is named Cairo.

Their most famous athlete alumnus is Walt "Clyde" Frazier, star of their 1967 NIT championship-winning basketball team, who later went on to lead the New York Knicks to NBA titles in 1970 and 1973.
Maybe Walt is the best known, but Jim Hart had quite a career playing QB for the old St. Louis football Cardinals.

I think by all these replies that it's obvious there is a very wide ranged and unique naming scheme out there...that is...besides the lions, tigers, and bears, oh whatever...If you have a cool mascot, you know you do, it's all good baby, it's all good!

University of Louisiana at Lafayette "Ragin' Cajuns"

97 - Florida A&M "Rattlers"

A much misunderstood creature, the rattlesnake, makes a fine collegiate nickname and mascot. You leave them alone and they leave you alone, plus they eliminate a lot of vermin in our world.

96 - Old Dominion University "Monarchs"

A little boring, maybe, but the nickname fits the school, located as it is in Norfolk, Virginia, very near the original Jamestown colony in Virginia, founded in the year 1607. Kings, queens and other royalty have played a big role in Virginia's history, and "Dominion" is certainly a regal term.

Hey, they do the same thing with San Diego. It is the University of San Diego (USD), not San Diego University (SDU). Happens all the time.
